Roman was baptized “...in the Name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” We pray for God’s continued graces for him, his family and friends. St. Paul the Hermit Paul was reportedly born in Egypt, where he was orphaned by age 15. He was also a learned and devout young man. During the persecution January 15th of Decius in Egypt in the year 250, Paul was forced to hide in the home of a friend. Fearing a brother-in-law would betray him, he fled in a cave in the desert. His plan was to return once the persecution ended, but the sweetness of solitude and heavenly contemplation convinced him to stay. He went on to live in that cave for the next 90 years. A nearby spring gave him drink, a palm tree furnished him clothing and nourishment. After 21 years of solitude, a bird began bringing him half of a loaf of bread each day. Without knowing what was happening in the world, Paul prayed that the world would become a better place. Saint Anthony of Egypt attests to his holy life and death. Tempted by the thought that no one had served God in the wilderness longer than he, Anthony was led by God to find Paul and acknowledge him as a man more perfect than himself. The raven that day brought a whole loaf of bread instead of the usual half. As Paul predicted, Anthony would return to bury his new friend. Thought to have been about 112 when he died, Paul is known as the “First Hermit.” Visit Our acebook! How to find us: 1. The Little Catholic's Corner Today we learn about Jesus' Baptism. Just like Jesus, we get baptized too! Baptism is a gift from God. We are baptized in Jesus’ name, and our sins are forgiven. After Jesus was baptized, he prayed and the Holy Spirit came to him. The Holy Spirit comes to us in Baptism. We become members of God’s family. God is our Father. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. As members of God’s family, we take care of one another and welcome new members. Prayer for Life O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life: Look down, O Mother, upon the vast numbers of babies not allowed to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult, of men and women who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed by indifference or out of misguided mercy. Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and love to the people of our time. Obtain for them the grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives and the courage to bear witness to it resolutely, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life. New Year's Resolutions To Grow Your Faith 1. Become more mindful of God's presence - Even when we start and end our day with devotions and prayer, it's easy to forget about the nearness of God the rest of the time. If that's something you'd like to work on, try setting up reminders throughout your day. Maybe it's Post-it notes in strategic places that simply remind you, "God is here" or "God's got this." 2. Put an end to gossip - One of the best ways to deal with a tendency toward gossip is to change the way you respond when someone starts gossiping in your presence. Most gossip starts with someone sending out a feeler: "If I say something negative about so-and-so, will others jump on board?" But things change quickly the minute you say, "You know what I appreciate about them? I like the way they . . ." This allows you to shut down gossip without coming across as pious or judgmental. 3. Become a better servant - No one develops a servant mindset on accident. It's something we have to be intentional about, and the new year might offer a perfect opportunity. Maybe you want to make it a goal to volunteer for some church positions or work at a local soup kitchen. Or maybe it's as simple as finding some thankless tasks you can do for members of your family. The Mystery of Jesus' Baptism In ancient Israel there was a saying that was understandable only to people from that cultural circle. Well, when a young man got to know the woman he wanted to marry, he told his parents, relatives and friends that "he had finally found sandals for his feet". Everyone understood that he had found someone to go with to the end of the world. Today in the Gospel, John the Baptist says about Jesus: “I am not worthy to untie his thong from his sandals”. Thus, it presents the Savior - using the image of sandals - as a bridegroom, groom, ready to marry his beloved and make a pilgrimage with her along the paths of everyday life. This bride is the Church and humanity. The mystery of Jesus' baptism reveals to us his solidarity with sinners and his great love for His bride. Lord Jesus, You look at me with love with the eyes of the bridegroom. And I want to be your beloved. And although I am not worthy to tie a thong on your sandals, I believe in your merciful love. You live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. -Rev. Jakub Grzybowski
