FAIRMONT PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Order of Service for the Worship of God Fairmont Presbyterian Church nurtures and guides people to live inspired lives. January 30, 2022 10:30am 4th Sunday after Epiphany _____________________________________________________________________ Welcome and Announcements Rev. Brian Maguire Prelude O God, Thou Faithful God J.S. Bach Call to Worship (Psalm 138) Leader: I give you thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I sing your praise; People: All the kings of the earth shall praise you, O Lord, for they have heard the words of your mouth. They shall sing of the ways of the Lord, for great is the glory of the Lord. Leader: For though the Lord is high, God regards the lowly; but the haughty God perceives from far away. People: Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve me against the wrath of my enemies; you stretch out your hand, and your right hand delivers me. Leader: The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love. Hymn 341 O God, Show Mercy to Us Thaxted 1 O God, show mercy to us, and bless us with your grace; and cause to shine upon us the brightness of your face, so that your way most holy on earth may soon be known, and unto every people your saving grace be shown. Let all the peoples praise you; let all the nations sing; in every land let praises and songs of gladness ring. 2 For you will judge the peoples in truth and righteousness, and on the earth all nations will your just rule confess. Let all the peoples praise you; let all the nations sing. Then earth in rich abundance to us its fruit will bring. The Lord our God will bless us; our God will blessing send, and all the earth will worship to its remotest end. Prayer of Confession (in unison) Rev. Kelley Shin God of grace and mercy, we presume to build our lives and our world on our own terms. We celebrate our intelligence, power, and craft as we ignore your law and your call. Our pride confounds our perception and dulls our wisdom as we seek after lesser things. Forgive us our ignorance and our pride. Forgive our sin. Come to us as we are, where we are and transform us from within so that we may conform our lives to your hope…(time for silent prayer)…Amen.
Assurance of Pardon *Congregational Response #581 Glory Be to the Father Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. Passing of Christ’s Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. Time with Our Children Loralei Harding Anthem Give to My Eyes, Lord by Ronald Corp Megan Rehberg, soprano Prayer for Illumination Leader: Blessed are you Eternal One our God, sovereign of the world. People: In ancient days you spoke and created your people. Leader: Today let your Word and words come alive in us. People: So that we can live into your story with meaning, purpose, and hope. Leader: We ask this in the name of Jesus, our teacher. Amen. Scripture Reading Genesis 11:1-9 Now the whole earth had one language and the same words. And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there. And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly.” And they had brick for stone, and bitumen for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves; otherwise we shall be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” The Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which mortals had built. And the Lord said, “Look, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do; nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them. Come, let us go down, and confuse their language Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Sermon Growing Pains Rev. Brian Maguire Hymn 415 Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy Restoration 1 Come, ye sinners, poor and needy, weak and wounded, sick and sore; Jesus ready stands to save you, full of pity, love, and power. Refrain: I will arise and go to Jesus;
he will embrace me in his arms. In the arms of my dear Savior, O there are ten thousand charms. 2 Come, ye thirsty, come, and welcome; God’s free bounty glorify, true belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh. (Refrain) 3 Come, ye weary, heavy laden, lost and ruined by the fall; if you tarry till you’re better, you will never come at all. (Refrain) 4 Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream; all the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him. (Refrain) Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Pastoral Prayer (concluding with the Lord’s Prayer) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, Ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Invitation and Prayer of Discipleship We will not be passing the offering plates to collect tithes and offerings today. There is a basket by each exit door for the collection of tithes and offerings. (Loose coins go to Children and Youth Ministries.) Hymn 438 Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me Toplady 1 Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. Let the water and the blood
from thy wounded side which flowed be of sin the double cure, cleanse from guilt and make me pure. 2 Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law’s demands. Could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, all for sin could not atone. Thou must save, and thou alone. 3 Nothing in my hand I bring; simply to thy cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress, helpless, look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die. 4 While I draw this fleeting breath, when my eyelids close in death, when I soar to worlds unknown, see thee on thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. Here are some of our activities in 2021: Jeremiah’s Letter—This Christmas, we delivered Walmart and Kroger gift cards totaling $3,600 to nine area families of need. Mittens, Gloves and Hats for JFK—Fairmont very generously donated dozens of mittens, gloves and hats to needy children at JFK Elementary School in Kettering. Dayton Food Bank/South Dayton Food Pantry (FISH)—Fairmont members donated over $8,000 for local food relief in 2021. In addition, Fairmonters have donated nonperishable food and personal care items on a continuing basis to the South Dayton Food Pantry/FISH including a major collection during our
5th Sunday drive in October. SICSA—Our 5th Sunday Project for May was to hold a collection for SICSA, asking for funds as well as cat litter, wet kitten food, etc. The congregation responded generously to this drive. In 2022, we will continue our association with the agencies and organizations shown in our annual report, to be included in Fairmont’s Annual Meeting of the Congregation on February 6, 2022. These organizations can also be seen on the bulletin board at the Mission Table in the upstairs hallway at church. We are always looking for members who feel called to join the Mission Team to help support area families and children in need. If so interested, please contact Charlie Chamberlain at 937-232-8470 or email at greenbranch6@sbcglobal.net. Experimenting with Banners: The Banner Committee has been formed. Cindy Youngerman is Chair, and the committee members are Jenny Fiden, Kelley Shin, Kerri Miles, Ann Diller, and Wynn Adam. Jenny Fiden found the banners that hung in the sanctuary for many years. We are going to temporarily hang them in the Sanctuary to test for sound improvement. We will then decide on what the banners should look like and how many to purchase for the Sanctuary. Epiphany Star Word Those who want to participate again this year in a year-long spiritual practice of an Epiphany Prayer Star Word, you may draw a star word from the basket in the Fellowship Hall and the Sanctuary before or after worship. This word is your “prayer star word” for the year 2022. Through the year, you may use this word in prayer, in Bible study, in faith conversations, in study, and in times of reflection and meditation to see how God will speak to you through this one “prayer word.” Fairmont Women’s Retreat THEME: Listening to Sacred Voices LEADERS: Rev.
