standing together while far apart Greenpoint Pictures was started with an innovative and DIY spirit and in these unprecedented times, we’ve been reflecting on our early days. We started out as a nimble, grassroots, boutique production company, producing and editing in the corner of a loft apartment deep in Greenpoint, Brooklyn (hence our name). Fast forward to the present day, with the world and our way of life flipped upside down, we find ourselves revisiting our origins. Our DIY skills have never been more essential and we pride ourselves on bringing that unique approach to each and every job. 2
live action Our veteran team specializes in a fast and efficient production style while preserving a premium quality. We take pride in our ability to adapt while maintaining our same Greenpoint ethos and spirit at the core of each project. We are not bound to union staffing requirements or minimums and can scale down or up a crew as the job may require; from a five person documentary style crew, to a full crew with large scale needs. Our shooting approach is innovative; our creative teams are always pushing boundaries. We also have access to trusted professional researchers whose experience in long format documentary storytelling ensures that projects of any size in any corner of the world can be seamlessly brought to life. 3
We just finished a successful four-day, all remote shoot for Johnson & Johnson and another agency-involved, two-day shoot for Baskin-Robbins. We’ve cut our teeth on this new reality and are currently pitching on others. Assembling the entire team, and agency, on a single Zoom feed is a new level of excitement. Casting, locations and all meetings are done on Zoom. As the restrictions on non-essential businesses and gatherings begin to lift, we look forward to working with and tailoring a custom production approach for your job. There are also a variety of health and safety preventative services and solutions we can offer as part of the production prep process, as we navigate through these strange times. 4
The Hudson Dusters teamed up with Neutrogena and Velocity OMC to direct a remote shoot that didn’t compromise on quality or production value. We teamed up with three talented DPs, and cast their family members. The shoot was a collaborative effort, with the creatives working alongside the directors during the shoot over Zoom. The end result were three premium looking spots that stand apart from the current advertising landscape. The Hudson Dusters | Neutrogena 4
post-production Edit is how we got our start. It’s been a major part of our identity since day one. We have full capabilities to oversee and finish your projects remotely, sending postings and responding to comments expediently. Our staff members are set up to work from home on full workstations, with services in place to transport materials. Even in the initial days of the quarantine, we were able to transition jobs that we were editing at our office to “work from home” stations, and have not had to compromise on deliverables or schedule. Additionally, we have been able to take on new post-production jobs. Our post has been working non-stop since the early days of quarantine, and maintaining a seamless workflow for our clients. We continue to work with a large pool of colorists, audio engineers, graphic and VFX artists with remote studios. Additionally, we can live stream sessions, so that our clients can continue to supervise remotely. Below is an example of a recent piece of work that was post produced by Greenpoint Pictures. archival & ugc footage While we wait to dive fully back into live-action production, we are excited about the opportunity to work with archival and user-generated footage. Both have been used to great effect to create unique and compelling stories. We have a great team that understands how to source footage and collect user content to empower our storytellers. They are passionate cinephiles who are experienced in documentary filmmaking. All archival and UGC below was produced and sourced by our in-house team. 7
case studies Our strength is in our ability to seamlessly execute a wide range of jobs, from a simple quick-strike shoot with just a few people, to nimble documentary style jobs, to a highly technical shoot with multiple cameras, cranes, and social media team. Here is a sampling of some jobs we’ve done, where we’ve been able to do more with less. 9
Baskin-Robbins Baskin-Robbins and 22 Squared had found four kids who were doing amazing charitable deeds during Covid, and wanted to showcase their work by surprising each of them with a donation (oh, and a year of free ice cream too)! E.J. McLeavey-Fisher helmed this remote shoot, where we enlisted the parents as our film crew, guiding them on how to set up their cell phones and frame each shot. The intimate setup allowed E.J. to capture genuine moments with each kid, letting their unique personalities shine through. By editing these spots in-house, we were able to oversee the process from start to finish, and keep to a tight delivery schedule. Nick x Milk Director Lauren Sick busted a move making this slick video for Milk + Nickelodeon that seamlessly combines dance and stunt choreography in a lead up to the Kids Choice Awards. We tapped into the local skate community in LA, and found a group of talented performers to collaborate with, melding the two worlds together. Finishing the spot at Greenpoint Pictures Post made for a cohesive process from start to finish. 10
Rocky Mountain Health Plans The Roos Brothers went to their home state for these spots, showcasing their beautiful eye for cinematography and action filming in “Blood”. With a lean documentary crew, The Roos Brothers were able to stay light and adaptable as they crafted each narrative. Love by Gap With a small documentary crew, Renee Mao was able to capture this intimate portrait of a mother and son for Gap. By keeping a small footprint, it allowed Renee and her team to be a fly on the wall, and let the authentic performances come from Jodie and her son. 11
#STILLatHOME Ghost + Cow made this fun video to promote the current 'stay at home' effort. The short features the duo’s family members, several cast members from their feature film Drunk Bus –––including Ozark’s Charlie Tahan–––and even some of the team at Greenpoint. quarantine recommendations Quarantine got you?? We’ve asked our directors what they’ve been doing in between news obsessing and washing hands. Here’s the advice: E.J. McLeavey-Fisher (Maplewood, NJ) - I’ve been running every day, which I can upgrade to a full-body workout if I elect to push one of my girls along in the running stroller. - Relying on Zoom video calls for just about everything (virtual music class for the girls, aimless conversations with my extended family, playing poker with my childhood friends from Cape Cod). - Trying to figure out new doc ideas that I can shoot via FaceTime/Skype interviews and guided self-shot B-roll. - And most crucially, our neighborhood’s 5pm mandate to go outside, drink in-hand, and say hello to one another at a safe distance. 13
Michael Kuhn - The Hudson Dusters (Brooklyn, NY) Our house is extremely busy. Between stopping our savage one-year old from belly flopping off of chairs and helping the three older kids with online schooling, there’s not a lot of time to Netflix and chill. But some simple tips that have been working for us: - Be informed but do NOT overwatch the news, listen to music instead. - Parents: make some time for yourselves. We have a cocktail hour here, it’s a good way for my wife and me to catch up and unwind. - Eat healthy food! None of us are active enough just for the pure fact that we’re all spending our days in homes and apartments, so try and eat healthy to balance it out. Niles Roth - The Hudson Dusters (Brooklyn, NY) - Don’t watch the news first thing in the morning. It will do nothing but ruin your day. That was the case before Covid and now more than ever. If you watch the news first thing in the morning, it will drive you to drink first thing in the morning; which leads me to my next point. - Try and hold off on drinking until noon. You should really hold off til night but I know quite well from some of these zooms that some of y’all are having tequila in your Cinnamon Toast Crunch. - Talk to your parents. Or your loved ones. Or friends. Pretty much everyone is scared and everyone wants to talk and know you’re okay. - Do something you’ve always wanted to do that you can do in your own apartment. For me, that’s learning Spanish. For others it’s cooking or writing or cleaning (not sure who these people are). - Don’t order soft serve from Milk Bar two days in a row like I did. I am disgusting. 14
Brandon LaGanke & John Carlucci - Ghost + Cow (Montclair, NJ + Brooklyn, NY) - Write a screenplay, a short story or something creative. Remember: Shakespeare wrote “King Lear” while quarantined during The Plague. - Make your own bidet. - Related to our first suggestion, don’t write about being quarantined. There will be a million screenplays just like that one. Cats are still a popular topic. Write about cats. Jesse Heath (Los Angeles, CA) - I’m spending this quarantine painting in my studio. Having lived in Los Angeles for the last four years I’m now an expert at social distancing so I’m happy to be able to put this new skill into effect. - I’m also using this time to reconnect with my family in England via FaceTime, which my Mum has been thrilled about. It’s actually been nice to slow things down for a minute and stop to catch my breath. - When it’s time to step out into the world I bring my sidekick Monty, an ill-tempered English Bull Terrier. In the past I’ve lamented Monty’s “stay away from us” attitude, but it’s actually perfect in the current climate. I guess every dog does have its day. 15
Lauren Sick (Los Angeles, CA) - FOR AN UNLEADED BOLT OF HAPPINESS STRAIGHT TO YOUR HEART (THAT DOUBLES AS A SERIOUS WORKOUT: Dance Church is live- streaming their undeniably giddy dance classes multiple days a week. Every instructor is an absolute joy, and will keep you on your toes with directives, like, “Now BURN your BUTT like a BUNSEN BURNER!!!!” Who knows what that even means? Who cares? Their enthusiasm is more infectious than the Coronavirus, and it is almost guaranteed to make you laugh, sweat, and cry. (And don’t we all need a little bit more of that these days?) - FOR 80s / 90s NOSTALGIA: You can order the original Super Mario Brothers console, with 30 preloaded games, complete with the old school controllers. The nostalgia factor is off the charts, and reminds you of a simpler time. Now You’re Playing with Power. - FOR YOUR INNER THESPIAN: If you happen to have two copies of the same play on your bookshelf, and you are isolating with a loved one: Choose the roles, stage the blocking, do the voices, and enjoy the fruits of your theatrical genius within the confines of your own living room. I’ll see you on Broadway. 16
Renee Mao (Perth, Australia) - Support your local businesses! If you are in a position to, lend a hand to your local community businesses that are struggling during this time. Whether that’s ordering take out from a restaurant or cafe, not asking for full refunds or compensation for canceled events, hotels, trips etc, or actively donating money to businesses or organizations - find a way to help the people in need if you can. - Put your time and efforts into a side project, something you’re passionate about that you don’t usually find enough time to work on. For me, it’s working on my script and brushing up my piano skills. - Watch good movies, ones that inspire and teach you new things. - Try and stay positive and count three things to be grateful for every day! Josh Roos - The Roos Brothers (Boulder, CO) - Try to stay in a normalish routine; as much as I love a good noon’ish rise, I’m trying to avoid it. It’s already hard enough to remember what day of the week it is. - Do the things you’ve been meaning to do: repaint furniture, call grandma, commit tax fraud. - Staying fit or getting quarantine fit: convert the living room into an exercise/yoga studio. A lot of classes are streamable. - Learn something new: my girlfriend and I were practicing our DJ skills until the neighbors complained. - Play some games; Who Am I (sticky note on the forehead game) is a great one. 17
