PRESIDENTS REPORT Hello everyone Newsletter time again and it is difficult to find much to write about when there is so little action happening out there that would be of interest to you all. Of course there is plenty happening behind the scenes with organising of the Far North Rally, which includes a Classic Rally for the more historic cars, and the up-coming race season. From all indications I think that both race and rally will be very well supported. There has been one extra Taupo round added this season in November which is a little unusual and has come about from the Thunder in the Park meeting being shifted from the vacated Supercar date to the week before then abandoned for 2019. It has been postponed until 2020 but unfortunately our original Pukekohe date being snapped up by another organiser and with neither of the Auckland tracks having further available dates Taupo was our only option. The dates shuffling around at Pukekohe has been frustrating for all involved and without going into too much detail it is because of conflicting dates between horse racing and motorsport. The two don’t intermix obviously. We have engaged the services of Tim Hill from HRC to try to get the Thunder in the Park meeting up and running again as it really requires someone who has a full time job in the motorsport arena to dedicate time more time to the task. Sadly we recently lost one of our long time Auckland Car Club members Stephen (Steve) Gillard. Steve along with his wife Karen have been involved with the club and circuit racing for many, many years. Steve raced Datsun’s in the early days and more recently a Formula Ford. He also served time on the MSNZ race commission and was involved with the technical side when Supertourers came on the scene. Steve was the current series coordinator of the North Island Formula Fords “NIFF” and attended all of last season’s Auckland Car Club events that NIFF ran at. A true gentleman and well respected by all that knew him, this was reflected by the huge gathering at his funeral, one of the largest I can remember. We send our condolences to Karen and the rest of the family. Going back some time ago I included mention of a race class we called the Auckland Heritage Race Series. This class was to run in conjunction with the Production Muscle Car Group and would allow for Pre 1985 cars that are to a similar specification to the Production Muscle Cars to compete. The difference between the two classes is simply the engine size where production muscle only caters for six cylinder and above the heritage class would allow four cylinders and above. We are very keen to have this class gain some traction and our expectations are not high initially as far as competitor numbers go as being mixed in with an existing class there will be competitive racing without the pressure of showing up with their own grid. The plan is to
eventually end up with a core group of six to twelve cars that just want to race without the biff and bash and enjoy their classic car out on the track. The only stipulation is that the cars should not be Japanese as we already have The ACJS (all classic Japanese Series) which such cars would be better to run in. I would love to hear from anyone that would be interested in running in the series or would like to offer their assistance to promote it. That’s all from me Bret Davy Welcome to our new members this month Rob Brown-Bayliss Shane Varn Brendan McGovern Zihao (Frost) Song James Sutton Ross Peden Shane Tapp
