EPIPHANY: CHRIST CAME FOR ALL NATIONS
Our Christmas Crib is now complete : a star has risen in the East, and the Magi have followed this sign, until it came
to rest over the place where the child Jesus lay. The Magi have come and worshipped the one who has been revealed
to them as the new – born ‘King of the Jews’. It all makes a very attractive scene. The Church’s homilies on this feast
of the Epiphany remind us year after year that we celebrate today the manifestation of Christ to the gentiles, to all the
nations, through the Magi .
We are rightly reminded that Christ, although ‘King of the Jews’, came for all. All are called to follow the Magi in
worshipping the one true God, made flesh in Jesus, the Christ. The Christmas encounter of how God Himself became
a human being and at the Epiphany showed Himself to all the nations of the world in the persons of the Magi , is an
essential part of our Christian faith. But it is not the central work of Christ, and the Gospel writers make that quite
clear to us.
St. Matthew takes care to point us forward to events that will take place later. Many years after the star, there will be
another sign that will rest over the place where Jesus is and proclaim Him to be the ‘King of the Jews’. This sign
(INRI) too will be a proclamation of Christ to all the nations, for it will be written and placed on the cross in
Hebrew, Latin and Greek .
The consumer Christmas has all but squeezed Christ out of the picture, and it is primitive for us to suppose that as
Christians we are completely protected from the sin of this materialist worship. In our families we know too of the
sin that can arise from the tensions associated with this time .
As we take down our Christmas decorations, and in particular as we take down the star over the crib, or the various
stars we may have put up around the place, we would do well to call to mind not only the sign that hung over Jesus’
head proclaiming Him ‘King of the Jews' for all the nation at His birth, but the one that hung over His head
proclaiming Him thus at His death on the cross. Let us praise our Lord Jesus Christ who came for all nations .

EPIFANÍA: CRISTO VINO POR TODAS LAS NACIONES
Nuestro Pesebre Navideño ya está completo: ha salido una estrella de Oriente, y los Magos han seguido esta señal,

The Magi followed faithfully that Light which filled their hearts, and they encountered the Lord.
The star appearing in the sky kindled in their minds and in their hearts a light that moved them to
seek the great Light of Christ. The destiny of every person is symbolized in this journey of the Magi
of the East: our life is a journey, illuminated by the lights which brighten our way, to find the
fullness of truth and love which we Christians recognize in Jesus, the Light of the World .
Like the Magi, every person has two great “books” which provide the signs to guide this pilgrimage:
the book of creation and the book of sacred Scripture. What is important is that we be attentive,
alert, and listen to God who speaks to us, who always speaks to us. As the Psalm says in referring to
the Law of the Lord: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” ( Ps.119: 105 ). Listening to the
Gospel, reading it, meditating on it and making it our spiritual nourishment especially allows us to encounter the
living Jesus, to experience Him and His love .
As we recall Jesus’ manifestation (Epiphany) to humanity in the face of a Child, may we sense the Magi at our side,
as wise companions on the way. They teach us not to be content with a life of worthlessness, of ‘playing it safe’, but
to let ourselves be attracted always by what is good, true and beautiful…by God, who is all of this , and so much
more! The Magi teach us not to be deceived by appearances , by what the world considers great , wise and powerful.
We must not stop at that. It is necessary to guard the faith. Today this is of vital importance: to keep the faith. We
must press beyond the darkness , beyond the voices that raise alarm and beyond worldliness.
We need to welcome the light of God into our hearts and, at the same time, combine simplicity with astuteness, as
Jesus told His disciples: “Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves” (Mt.10:16). We must press on in simplicity to
receive the love and faith, where shines forth the Sun from on high, the King of the universe. By the example of the
Magi, may we seek the Light and keep the faith.

The Church of God is convoked in Synod. The path entitled “For a
Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission” will
solemnly open on the 9th – 10th of October 2021 in Rome and on
the following 17th of October in each particular Church. One
fundamental stage will be the celebration of the XVI Ordinary
General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, in October 2023,
which will be followed by the implementation phase that will
again involve the particular Churches.
VII. WITH THE OTHER CHRISTIAN DENOMINATIONS The dialogue between
Christians of different confessions, united by one Baptism, has a special place in the synodal
journey.
What relations do we have with the brothers and sisters of other Christian denominations?
What areas do they concern?
What fruits have we drawn from this “journeying together”?
What are the difficulties?
VIII. AUTHORITY AND PARTICIPATION A synodal Church is a participatory and
co-responsible Church.
How do we identify the goals to be pursued, the way to achieve them, and the steps to be

How is authority exercised within our parish Church?
What are the practices of teamwork and co-responsibility?
IX. DISCERNING AND DECIDING In a synodal style, decisions are made through
discernment, based on a consensus that flows from the common obedience to the Spirit.
By what procedures and methods do we discern together and make decisions?
How can they be improved?
How do we promote participation in decision-making within hierarchically structured
communities?
How do we articulate the consultative phase in which the people of God express themselves
with the deliberative one in which the Bishops, guided by the Holy Spirit, discern a decision?
How and with what tools do we promote transparency and accountability?
How are we all involved in decision making?
X. FORMING OURSELVES IN SYNODALITY The spirituality of journeying together is
called to become an educational principle for the formation of the human person and of the
Christian, of the families, and of the communities.
What formation does the Church offer for discernment and commitment to our Baptismal
call?
How do we form people, especially those who hold roles of responsibility within the Christian
community, to make them more capable of “journeying together,” listening to one another and

La Iglesia de Dios es convocada en Sínodo. El camino, cuyo título
es «Por una Iglesia sinodal: comunión, participación y misión», se
iniciará solemnemente el 9-10 de octubre del 2021 en Roma y el

diferentes confesiones, unidos por un solo Bautismo, tiene un puesto particular en el camino sinodal.

IX. DISCERNIR Y DECIDIR En un estilo sinodal se decide por discernimiento, sobre la base de un
consenso que nace de la común obediencia al Espíritu.

¿Cómo promovemos la participación en las decisiones dentro de comunidades jerárquicamente
