ST. ELIZABETH PASTORATE 104 1st ST SE, PO Box 286 Epworth, IA 52045 https://stelizabethpastorate.com 563.876.5540 Catholic Communities of Bankston, Epworth, Farley, Peosta and Placid LIVE THE LITURGY There is a “great cloud of witnesses” found in the official saints of the church and in ordinary people we meet every day. They are faith-filled inspirations who, by their example, help us to persevere in our faith. Living in a sea of conflict, change, challenge, and confusion, it is easy to grow tired and get weary. With so many things in competition for our attention, it is challenging to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and the Kingdom of God. We have to keep running the race and continue proclaiming the Good News. This message is not always welcome. It can cause division, challenge accepted mindsets, ruffle peoples’ feathers, and cause some folks to become defensive. God’s ways are not always our ways. Even though often rejected by the world, the message of God in Jesus Christ must continue to be preached. We can rely on the examples of faith before us and around us and not lose heart. As Jesus endured the voices of opposition, so too can we. ©LPi Ryan Kramer, grandson of Loras and Mary Ann Kramer of St. Patrick, Epworth Henry Lamphere, father of Teresa Ostwinkle of St. John the Evangelist, Placid Jeanette Welu, sister of Leo Herbst of St. John the Baptist, Peosta Lois M. Sweeney, sister of Charlotte Pfeiffer of St. John the Baptist, Peosta Darby Michael O’Connell, son of Kevin and Jade O’Connell became a member of the Question of the Week St. Clement family on August 7 in the waters Can I feel the fire within that leads me to speak of Baptism. out and speak up despite the consequences?
FROM THE PASTOR In the gospel reading this weekend, Jesus has some difficult words about the division and disunity that his message will cause. We like to wish for and dream of everything being in harmony, but much of life, politics, families, schools and even churches have competing factions that vie for dominance. Navigating these are often difficult. Jesus’ message is God’s message and human beings, in our imperfect nature, sometimes interpret that message in different ways. The mature Christian learns to accept some of these differences and manage these conflicts to stay focused on the message and our mission. Other items to note: • As many of your already know, Fr.
