October 31, 2021 Thirty First Sunday in Ordinary Time Keeping It Simple Do you like simple things? Like one plus one equals two. What could be simpler? No complex equa- tions to remember. Simple, right? Or wouldn’t life be a lot simpler if all we had to remember were two names, like John and Mary? It would certainly simplify my life. I would never forget a person’s name. (After all, you only have to remember one name; I have to remember thousands.) Our predilection towards simplicity shows up almost everywhere. In sports, basketball for example, we start off March Madness with sixty-four teams, but ultimately, we come down to just two in the final playoffs. The concept is the same for other sports as well – two teams contest for the World Series pennant in baseball, two for the Super Bowl in football, two for the World Cup in soccer and so on. Simplification makes it easier for us to remember who is playing whom. It makes it easier to focus our loyalties, capture our imaginations and energize our conversations and debates. We even carry this concept over into our politics. The two major parties may start off with each party fielding numerous candidates for the same office, but by the end of the primaries and conventions, by election day, there is usually just one candidate endorsed by each party for each office. Simplification. Simplification is not limited to the secular world. The Torah, the lawbook of the Israelites, contains no less than 613 unique commandments given by God through Moses to the people of God. Who can remember 613 separate commandments? Even when God reduced the number to the Big Ten, the Israelites still had trou- ble remembering and keeping them. No wonder they got into so much trouble. Do you know all Ten Com- mandments? Can you repeat them in order? Maybe that’s the reason we, like the Israelites, have so much trou- ble living by them. We need a simpler version. Thank God, our readings today, from Deuteronomy and Mark, try to simplify things for us, especially the laws and precepts that should govern our behavior towards the God who created us and our attitudes to- ward the people around us. Jesus’ answer to the scribe’s question about which law is the most important re- duces all the rules and regulations to their essence: Love God above all things, with all your heart, mind, and strength, and your neighbor as yourself. Simplicity itself. Easy to remember but also rich in meaning. The first part (Love God) summarizes the first three commandments, the three that deal with our relationship with God – loving him above all else, not using his name in vain, and keeping holy the Lord’s Day. It is represented by the vertical bar of the cross, the bar symbolizing the relationship of love between us and the Father. The second part of Jesus’ statement summarizes the remaining seven commandments that govern how we are to love our neighbor – from honoring our parents and not killing, stealing, or committing adultery, to not bearing false witness or envying others their possessions and relationships. This second part is symbolized by the horizontal bar of the cross, the bar that connects us with others in loving relationship. This simple, two-part summary of all the laws of the Israelites and the Ten Commandments, this cross, is certainly easy to remember, but is it any easier to put into practice? Not unless we remember who is on that cross, who joins that cross together, and who perfectly carries out all of the commandments represented by that cross, those that govern our relationship with the Father and those that deal with our relationships with others. That person is Jesus, the only true high priest who saves those who approach God through him. It is only through Jesus, the holy, innocent, undefiled one, separated from sinners, higher than the heavens, that we can carry out even the simplest summary of the way of life to which we are called through our baptism. It is only through Jesus, the one whose priesthood does not pass away, the one who lives forever to make interces- sion for us, that we can approach the Father with confidence and be faithful to our commitments to love one another. It does not get any simpler – or easier – that that, for Jesus is the one to whom we cry out: I love you, O Lord, my strength! Blessings, Fr. Chris 2

He wants us to share out of our love for Him, not out of obliga on. Using our talent in parish ministry and contribu ng money to support our parish mission is important, but it’s more important to spend me in prayer with God daily and discern how He is calling us to be generous with all of our gi s. Not just the visible ones, but the invisible ones like love, mercy and forgiveness. 4

¿SABÍA A USTED?? Quéé hacerr antess dee administrarr primeross auxilioss a bebéss o niños?
