This week we have been on countdown to next Monday when we all come back to school! On Monday we found out about St David’s Day, listened to the story of ‘Elen Benfelen a’r Tair Arth’ (that’s ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’) read in welsh by the lovely Mrs Clayton, investigated and made daffodils and explored google earth to locate wales and many ACORN CLASS NEWS other places as well. Our theme this week has been farm animals and we have enjoyed a range of stories which have led us into map making, creative writing, ladybird themed maths, weighing and measuring and all sorts of creative activities from biscuit making to rock chicks. However, the big excitement of the week was on Wednesday when we had 30 members of Acorn reception and preschool together on a google meet and we put some chicken eggs into the incubator in our classroom. If we look after them carefully over the next three weeks, and are very lucky, we hope to have some baby chicks in Acorn class just before Easter. On Thursday many of us chose to dress up for World Book Day as well as creating our own gallery of dressed potato storybook characters. For more photos of our Acorn adventures, please look at our class blog at https://www.ashton.worcs.sch.uk/news/acorns-news/ “Shaping bright futures together”
Our last week of home schooling has been a busy one and the children have worked extremely hard. We’re really proud of all their effort and enthusiasm. We also can’t wait to welcome them all back to school. Our English lessons continue to be based on our class text, ‘Could a penguin ride a bike?’ This week, the children have gained a greater understanding of questions and statements, been verb detectives, joined sentences with conjunctions and written some very creative ideas. In Maths, Year 1s have been counting in 2s in all sorts of different ways while Year 2s have explored line symmetry and 2D shapes. CLASS HAWTHORN NEWS In our Topic lessons, the children learned about the five oceans of the world and began their work on Antarctica. They’ve also been keeping a weather watch throughout the month of February and looked at the data to evaluate the different types Our Science lessons this half of weather recorded and compare it with the term are all about Animals and observations they made in November. Humans, and this week the children explored the changes that take place as creatures As you know, Thursday was grow up. They each chose one World Book Day, and we to focus on which was a great thought you might like to see activity for all the animal a few photos of the children lovers in our class! dressed as their favourite characters. Can you see who they all are? And finally, you may remember that last half term we challenged the children to make a vehicle for the future from junk modelling. We were bowled over by their ingenuity and creativity, and wanted to take this opportunity to share all their designs with you. They went through a detailed design process – planning and drawing their ideas first, making them up with care and precision, and then decorating them to create the finished product. Afterwards, they evaluated them and thought about any changes they might implement if they were to make them again. We have a class of very talented young designers, as the photos show! Great job, Team Hawthorn! I wonder if we’ll see any of their vehicles when we’re out and about sometime soon. “Shaping bright futures together”
We have come to the end of Home schooling – finally!! (No whooping or dancing in the street parents!!) We cannot wait to welcome back your children. We have had a productive week and are very pleased to see that you have continued to complete lots of the tasks knowing we are back in school next week. We had a fun World Book Day quiz with many of the Key Stage 2 children. Lots of you made a great effort to dress NEWS FROM OAK & WILLOW up as well-known characters and join in the fun. The children answered True or False or multiple-choice questions on a range of books and authors, holding up their answers on cards like a TV game show!! They got lots right too – well done everyone. A wide range of book- based activities were completed here are a few examples along with some dressing up photos. “Shaping bright futures together”
Science In science this week we looked at interpreting and creating animal classification keys. The children had to identify different animals from the keys and then create one of their own. They did a great job as it was harder more NEWS FROM OAK & WILLOW to draw these on the screen than on paper. Topic We have continued with our Roman topic and incorporated some of this into our English work too. The children had to think of an alternative ending to the Romulus and Remus story. Many came up with a cooperative solution whereby the brothers worked together and settled their differences or built roads, tunnel or a bridge to join two separate cities together. Some however, were unable to reconcile their differences and met a gruesome ending! The success of Julius Caesar was the main focus for topic this week, the children wrote interview questions for this historical leader and wrote the answers he would have given too. We were very impressed with how much they learnt about him. In art we asked the children to follow a drawing tutorial to enable them to create a Roman soldier. They were fantastic as you can see from this wonderful selection. We will continue to draw some more on or return to school as we need to create a Roman Century of 100 soldiers for a classroom display! “Shaping bright futures together”
