Warden Hill Junior School Year 6 Curriculum Summer Term 2 2019 English – We have many inspiring and enjoyable units of work planned for this term, the first of which will be an explanation text about how to care for a ‘Miptor’ (a creature borne from your child’s imagination!). The children are sure to enjoy this piece of writing since it will involve them creating their very own little creature out of clay. Other units will include Greek myths whereby children will write their own mythical story; a personal letter based on a film clip called “The Alchemist’s Letter”; and if time allows, a unit based on the very topical issue of plastics and how they are polluting our oceans. This unit will focus on developing students’ awareness of the need to recycle, limit and reuse our plastics both within the home and on a more global scale, if we are to protect our seas and oceans and the creatures who inhabit them. The unit will culminate in a persuasive letter to the Prime Minister suggesting what action should be taken to address the problem. After our residential, ‘Bushcraft’ trip, there is always a lot to write about including ‘thank you’ letters to the staff there; the children who remained in school are always eager to write about what they got up to! Talking of ‘Bushcraft’, the children who will not be joining us are sure to have a wonderful week in school as they will be learning all about Greece as part of language week. This also links nicely with our History work for this term. Children have been given a learning log task to create a fact file about Greece. Reading - Reading will continue to be a priority in Year 6 since it is our area for development. Please try to hear your child read every day at home as this will help them enormously. Many thanks.
