Health and Wellness Programs Evidence-based health and wellness workshops currently include two Personal Action Toward Health (PATH) classes: Diabetes PATH and Chronic Pain PATH. Your Support Helps Connect Our Neighbors, Friends, and Families to Life-Changing Services Meet Carrie, a TCOA Project Choices participant. At the time Carrie first connected with TCOA, she was recovering in a nursing home from a shattered femur and the multiple surgeries that followed. Carrie's daughter, Michelle, saw that Carrie wanted to go back home, and they both needed help to make that happen. Michelle called TCOA to learn about options, and was able to successfully become a paid family caregiver so that Carrie could live at home once again. When Carrie first came home after the nursing home stay, she could not put any weight on her leg, so Michelle would help her get out of bed, dress her, wheel her where she needed to go in the house, and changed her bandages. Michelle emphasized that the work of a caregiver can be emotionally exhausting, not to mention a financial burden. Michelle managed to care not only for her mom, but also her two children. Carrie says she feels fortunate that her daughter can help her and be paid to do so. Carrie is also grateful for the benefit of a family caregiver who she is familiar and comfortable with. Carrie “I’m home where I want to be. I can do things here. Without TCOA, I’d still be in a nursing home. I want to be as independent as I can be. But if I didn’t have TCOA, things would be a lot harder and I would be doing a lot less.” Carrie maintains a sense of independence at home by doing household chores. She vacuums the house in her wheelchair, and feels grateful that she can do these tasks without much assistance. Carrie also participates in TCOA’s Chronic Pain PATH class to discuss techniques for managing chronic pain. For Carrie and many others, this 6-week class is about more than pain management. Carrie says, “I enjoy knowing and talking to others who also stay at home like me. I don’t go anywhere other than to a doctor, so it’s nice to talk to others in similar situations.” There are thousands of older adults like Carrie in our service area. Your support helps them to live safely in the setting of their choice as they age.
