ABOUT THE LAB The Marquette University Blockchain Lab is a student- run organization that aims to facilitate education and collaboration in the interest of advancing knowledge and implementation of distributed ledger solutions. Since our inception in November 2017, we have seen a vibrant mix of engagement from companies, community members, and students. We host educational events, collaborate with other universities to develop content surrounding distributed ledger technology (DLT), and work with community partners to engage the larger community. Past events include the Supply Chain Management on Blockchain, the inaugural Milwaukee Blockchain Conference, and the Blockchain Meets Manufacturing panel. Upcoming events include the Solidity Development Workshop in partnership with DApperNetwork and the 2nd Annual Milwaukee Blockchain Conference.
EVENT TYPES The Marquette Blockchain Lab caters to two different audiences: students and community members. We hold different events throughout the year for each of these audiences. See below for details. L AB SPONSORED TRIPS In partnership with other organizations, the lab sponsors trips for students to attend blockchain events around the country. In April, students drove down to Chicago and attended Distributed Markets. Students learned from experts in government and finance about topics such as security tokens, compliance, and the role of VC in blockchain. The students also had the opportunity to network with some of the world’s most successful blockchain entrepreneurs including Jeremy Gardner, the founder of prediction markets platform, Augur. WORKSHOPS Lab sponsored workshops help community members and students get hands on experience and problem solve. On June 23rd, the lab will be hosting an Ethereum development workshop with DApperNetwork. Students and community members will have the opportunity to program their first decentralized application. Registration details here. PANELS These have been our bread and butter. In March 2018, the lab hosted a panel on blockchain in supply chain management. The event was moderated by Dr. Mark Cotteleer, Research Director at Deloitte and the panelists included Chris Kirchner, CEO at Slync.io, and Paul Biwer, the Director of Product Development at Biwer and Associates. We had over 60 attendees. On June 6th, we were joined by guest Jeff Allen, Global Business Systems Leader at Lucas Milhaupt on our Blockchain Meets Manufacturing panel. We had record attendance and audience engagement. EXPERT DISCUSSIONS Small groups allow for vibrant conversation. In February 2018, Derek Urben, CFO of Coinigy, came to Marquette for an intimate discussion with students on the growth of cryptocurrencies and current barriers to adoption. Students left the discussion with a basic understanding Bitcoin and how it solved the problem of digital scarcity. CONFERENCES In November 2017, the Marquette Blockchain Lab hosted Wisconsin’s first blockchain conference. The event brought in over 300 people with keynote speakers from Northwestern Mutual, Von Briesen & Roper, Fiserv, and Wipfli. Attendees learned about banking applications, legal ramifications, and security concerns. We anticipate an even higher turnout for our 2nd Annual Milwaukee Blockchain Conference on October 30th, 2018.
