Dear Sisters and Brothers at St. Jude:
Pentecost is the opposite or reversal of
Babylon. The building of the Babel
tower (Genesis 11:1-9) was an
expression of human pride and
arrogance. The sacred writer primarily
used the story to illustrate man’s
increasing wickedness, shown here in his
presumptuous effort to create an urban
culture apart from God. Unlike gothic
cathedrals, which were built to direct
our eyes to heaven, thus pointing our
destiny away from this earth, the
purpose of the tower of Babel was to
direct the attention to the human, unwittingly supplanting the domain of God.
Babel of pride and ambition symbolizes our divided and confused world, further exacerbated by
an incommunicable multilingual mess. On Pentecost, on the other hand, the early Christians spoke in
various languages, but they understood each other and were united with one another through the bond
of the Spirit. With the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the disciples in Jerusalem began to speak in
different languages, which Jews, Greeks, Mesopotamians, North Africans, and Italians heard in their
mother tongues (Acts 1:1-11). This was how the Church was created. This event also symbolizes the
missionary nature of the Church. From Jerusalem, the geographical center of the saving events, the early
Christians were sent to the ends of the earth to bring the Good News to every creature: a movement
from the center to the periphery. Therefore, the Church speaks many languages and embraces all
cultures, but she proclaims one Lord of all, who is over all and in all.
St. Jude’s parish is a fine example in this regard. Our distinctly multicultural and international
character is evident. We try to make room for one another. Instead of resorting to the base instinct of
claiming hegemony, we are invited to recognize, respect, and celebrate our rich diversity. It is
particularly heartening to see our St. Jude School students practice mutual respect and friendship, often
celebrating cultural richness of one another.
It takes a faith-rooted conversion of mind and heart to see the face of Christ in each other, and
to confront attitudes of cultural superiority, indifference and racism. This leads to communion expressed
through hospitality on the part of the receiving community and a sense of belonging and welcome on
the part of those immigrants who are arriving. With growing solidarity, we can look after one another.
Today we celebrate the Birthday of the Church, as the Church in Jerusalem did on Pentecost. The
Holy Spirit who connected the Jerusalem Church with God and with one another is the same Spirit who
brings us into communion with God and with one another.
We live in the Washington area, which can be often considered the epicenter of the world’s
power. We may take pride in the influence and prestige that our beloved city may have. Instead of
building another tower of Babel, however, I wish that we grow in our mutual understanding and
respect for one another, living out the spirit of Pentecost, embracing God and one another in a spirit of
respect, recognition, and compassion. Then, we can imagine an ongoing Pentecost in our midst.

Throughout the past few weeks, there have been many
conversations within the Catholic community about the
safety and morality of COVID-19 vaccines. The
Archdiocese of Washington supports and affirms
the statement published on March 2, 2021 by the USCCB.
We have provided the information below to respond to
any questions you might have about the COVID-19 vaccine
and Catholic moral teaching on this matter. For more
information on the vaccines and their development, you

Diemert, a medical doctor and scientist who is part of a

Queridas hermanas y hermanos de St.
Jude:
Pentecostés es lo opuesto o inverso
de Babilonia. La construcción de la torre
de Babel (Génesis 11: 1-9) fue una
expresión de orgullo y arrogancia
humanos. El escritor sagrado usó
principalmente la historia para ilustrar la
creciente maldad del hombre, que se
muestra aquí en su presuntuoso esfuerzo
por crear una cultura urbana aparte de
Dios. A diferencia de las catedrales
góticas, que fueron construidas para
dirigir nuestros ojos al cielo, señalando así
nuestro destino lejos de esta tierra, el propósito de la torre de Babel era dirigir la atención a lo humano,
suplantando inconscientemente el dominio de Dios.
Babel de orgullo y ambición simboliza nuestro mundo dividido y confuso, exacerbado aún más por un
lío multilingüe incomunicable. En Pentecostés, por otro lado, los primeros cristianos hablaban en varios
idiomas, pero se entendían y estaban unidos por el vínculo del Espíritu. Con el derramamiento del Espíritu
Santo, los discípulos en Jerusalén comenzaron a hablar en diferentes idiomas, que judíos, griegos,
mesopotámicos, norteafricanos e italianos escuchaban en sus lenguas maternas (Hechos 1: 1-11). Así fue como
se creó la Iglesia. Este evento también simboliza la naturaleza misionera de la Iglesia. Desde Jerusalén, el
