The competition to become the 2018/19 Guinness PRO14 champions is under way at a ferocious pace after just two rounds. Out of our first 14 games, nine have been decided by a score or less which illustrates the quality in offer and the desire of our teams to push each other to the limit. Last weekend’s clash in Llanelli between Scarlets and the reigning champions, Leinster, was the pick of the round with Test stars on both sides raising the levels of intensity as some of our finest coaches – Wayne Pivac and Leo Cullen – worked hard to out manoeuvre each other in the tactical stakes. But the opening weeks of the Guinness PRO14 have been encouraging on so many fronts. Benetton Rugby must take congratulations for kicking off their campaign with back-to-back wins for the first time, the Italian side will have aspirations to make the knock-out stages, but they will be severely tested against Scarlets this weekend. Ulster and Ospreys have also rebounded from their disappointments of last season to open up with two wins apiece, not to mention the fast start made by Glasgow Warriors which makes the list of teams capable of winning the title this season a lengthy one, indeed. For those of you in Dublin, Cork, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein and Edinburgh, you’ll get your first taste of live action this weekend with your support in the stadium making a big impact. We know that more and more of you are turning up each season and in the previous campaign our attendances rose by 10 per cent. You saw more tries than ever before – 861 to be exact – and that all stemmed from the speed of our ruck ball which World Rugby statistics have ranked as the quickest of any professional club tournament across the globe. The new season has also seen our new broadcasters show us what they’re all about and I’d like to congratulate Premier Sports, eir sport and DAZN for their coverage so far. In addition, TG4 and S4C continue to deliver Irish & Welsh language coverage which has been an ever-present part of the Championship since its inception. SuperSport will capture the season’s first action on South African soil this weekend, too, as Ulster and Glasgow Warriors set off on the first out-bound European tours of the campaign. Much like last season we trust they’ll make new friends and memories in the communities of Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth as our Championship continues to thrive in our growing international environment. A total of 297 International players appeared in the Guinness PRO14 last season with 76 making their Test debuts, all of which underlines the incredible work that takes place in all of our clubs to generate top-class talent season after season. For the first time the Championship is now home to the current Champions Cup winners and the Challenge Cup winners – Leinster Rugby and Cardiff Blues. Those are tremendous achievements to boast about and further congratulations to Leinster who not only became the first team do the Guinness PRO14 and European Cup double, but they also claimed their fifth title which is the most of any team in our Championship. Of course, everyone is fighting to reach the Guinness PRO14 season at Celtic Park which will mark another historic chapter for our Championship as the showpiece game is played at a non-rugby stadium for the first time.
