2021 WINTER/SPRING PROGRAMS Sports programs for individuals with physical disabilities or visual impairments
ABOUT US For over 30 years, Arizona Disabled Sports, the City of Mesa Parks, Recreation & Community Facilities and Mesa Public Schools have sponsored year-round, weekly sports training for athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairment ages six through adulthood. The partnership also makes possible annual special events and competitions. Athletes that participate in our programs include those with amputations, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, visual impairments or various other physical disabilities. Athletes may be ambulatory or use a manual or power wheelchair. 2021 Winter/Spring Programs
PROGRAM SCHEDULE ARCHERY After learning to target shoot, athletes can showcase their precision and accuracy either standing of from a seated position, depending on ability level. Adaptive equipment is available including bow stands and trigger release. The outdoor archery program follows the rules of the international Archery Federation found online at www.worldarchery.org. SEASON DATES: January 23 - May 15 TIME: Saturday Mornings with three time slots available* 7:30am - 11am LOCATION: Westwood High School - 945 W. Rio Salado Pkwy, Mesa, AZ 85201 NOTES: To optimize safety plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to start time TRACK & FIELD Track events include the 60, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500 and 5000 meter runs. The training regimen is tailored to the goals of each athlete. The rules of track are almost identical to those of its non-disabled counterpart. specific distances and implements utilized are determined by age and classification status. Athletes can participate in events with the help of adaptive equipment or no assistance at all. Prosthetics, crutches, walkers, and racing wheelchairs are all examples of adaptive equipment. Visually impaired athletes may use callers of tethers partners to assist in track events. Field events include shot put, javelin, discus, club throw, softball throw and long jump. The rules of field are almost identical to those of its non-disabled counterpart. Specific distances and implements utilized are determined by age and classification status. Athletes can participate in events with the help of adaptive equipment or no assistance at all. Throwing chairs are an example of adaptive equipment. Visually impaired athletes may use callers or tethered partners to assist in field events. PROGRAM SCHEDULE SWIMMING Athletes will gain practical knowledge of swimming strokes and rules while building endurance, increasing speed and improving technique through in-water drills during practice sessions. Practices will take place in a heated outdoor 25yd lap lane pool. When competing, no prostheses or assistive devises may be worn. Visit www.usaswimming.org for further information. SEASON DATES: January 23 - May 15 TIME: Saturdays from 11am - 1pm (March 6 - 27 session times are 12:30pm - 2:30pm) LOCATION: Kino Aquatic Center - 848 N. Horne, Mesa, AZ AIR GUN & RIFLE Inherent benefits of the sport of shooting, including fundamental knowledge of air pistols/rifles, competitive options, and the development of a sustainable, satisfying life time leisure activity. 12-year-old age minimum, unless prior shooting experience. Veteran scholarships available. SEASON DATES: January 26 - May 11 TIME: Tuesdays from 5pm - 8pm & Wednesdays from 10am - 1pm (Total of four sessions - limit one session/participant) LOCATION: Broadway Recreation Center - 59 E. WHEELCHAIR & AMPUTEE TENNIS The program will follow the red ball guidelines set forth in the Net Generation program sponsored by the United States Tennis Association (USTA). Athletes will learn basic skills and rules to play the sport with with family or friends and have the opportunity to enhance their skills for competitive play. PROGRAM SCHEDULE PHOENIX WHEELCHAIR SUNS BASKETBALL* Youth and teens develop basketball skills, physical fitness and a team philosophy to use on and off the court during the basketball season. Wheelchair basketball is physically demanding, as well as fast-paced. The Suns are competitive with home and away tournaments each season. many of the same rules from its counterpart apply in the wheelchair game. While plays and tactics are similar, special rules, such as those to accommodate dribbling from a wheelchair, are also in place. The program follows the official rules of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) found at www.nwba.org. SEASON DATES: January 25 - May 10 TIME: Monday Evenings Prep Division: 5:30pm - 6:30pm Juniors Division: 6:30pm - 8pm LOCATION: Broadway Recreation Center - 59 E. Broadway Rd., Mesa, AZ POWER SOCCER* A team sport specifically for those who use power wheelchairs, Power Soccer is gaining more momentum worldwide. Using a 13- inch ball and strong foot guards, three players and one goalkeeper take to an indoor court for a heated match. The program follows the official rules of the United States Power Soccer Association (USPSA) found at www.powersoccerusa.org. SEASON DATES: January 26 - May 11 TIME: Wednesdays from 4:30pm - 7pm LOCATION: Broadway Recreation Center - 59 E. Broadway Rd., Mesa, AZ BOCCIA Athletes will gain the knowledge and skills to play outdoor boccia. Athletes can use a variety of adaptive equipment (ramps, assistants, etc.) based on their level of impairment to participate with the least amount of accommodations possible. SEASON DATES: February 4th - May 13 TIME: Thursdays from 5pm - 6pm LOCATION: Gene Autry Park - 4125 E. McKellips Rd., Mesa, AZ *Season may be modified dependent upon the COVID-19 pandemic
PROGRAM SCHEDULE LONG DISTANCE CYCLING Weekly group rides explore various routes in the Valley. Intermediate and advanced cyclists improve riding technique, enhance stamina and interact with peers. The Long Distance Cycling Season is focused on preparing riders for the El Tour de Tucson race, taking place on Saturday, April 10, 2021. Family and friends are welcome to accompany cyclists on their weekly rides, however it should be noted that the minimum distance travelled for each session is 15 miles. SEASON DATES: January 23 - May 15 TIME: Saturdays from 8am - 11am LOCATION: TBD (Various locations throughout the East Valley) NOTES: Cyclists will train for the El Tour de Tucson event on Saturday, April 10, 2021. Cyclist will also have the opportunity to participate in El Tour de Mesa on Saturday, April 17, 2021. SPECIAL EVENTS & COMPETITIONS 8TH ANNUAL SPORTSFEST - TRACK, FIELD, ARCHERY & SWIMMING Check out the sports of track, field, archery, and swimming for athletes with physical disabilities and visual impairments at this one-day event. Participants will be introduced to the basics of each sport, the equipment, and have the opportunity to race, throw, shoot, and swim. DATE: Saturday, January 23, 2021 TIME: 9am - 12pm LOCATION: Archery, Track & Field: Westwood High School - 945 W. Rio Salado Pkwy., Mesa, AZ Swimming: Kino Aquatic Center - 848 N. Horne, Mesa, AZ SKIABLE ADAPTIVE ALPINE EXPERIENCE The cooperative program provides an opportunity for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers to enjoy the freedom and thrill of the downhill sport. Adaptive equipment and instruction is available throughout the month of February. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Arizona Snowbowl is only able to accommodate two participants/day. Participants are sure to experience an unforgettable day on the slopes! DATES: Individual sessions can be scheduled throughout TIME: the month of February Half Day Sessions: 9:30am - 12pm OR 1pm - 3:30pm LOCATION: Arizona Snowbowl - Flagstaff, AZ DESERT CHALLENGE GAMES Multi-sport event, including archery, track and field, swimming, and air gun & rifle shooting open to competitive athletes with a permanent physical disability or visual impairment ages six PROGRAM FEES through adulthood. Athletes competing in the event may qualify for Move United's Junior Nationals competition, the National Veterans Wheelchair Games and other National Championships by meeting the qualifying standards in their respective events. PROGRAM GUIDELINES DUE TO COVID-19 If you or anyone that you have been in contact with in the past two weeks is showing any symptoms of COVID-19, we kindly ask that you do not attend programs. Participants must enter the Broadway Recreation Center facility one at a time. Temperatures will be taken of anyone entering the building. Participants must socially distance (at least 6 feet apart). Participants must always wear a mask when not actively participating in their respective program. (Example: Participants may remove their mask when safely transferred into their kayak). Participants must wash their hands before and after an activity session. Spectators are HIGHLY discouraged, but if necessary, only one per participant . All spectators must maintain social distancing and follow mask guidelines. If a participant tests positive for COVID-19 they need to report test results to Arizona Disabled Sports immediately, self-quarantine for two weeks, and provide a negative COVID-19 test before resuming activity. Arizona Disabled Sports will inform participants that have been potentially exposed to COVID-19 immediately. Participants that have been potentially exposed to COVID-19 must present a negative COVID-19 test to Arizona Disabled Sports before resuming activity. Arizona Disabled Sports will support the financial costs of obtaining a COVID-19 test should a participant need it. Failure to follow guidelines will result in removal from the program. This is to ensure the safety of our participants, coaches, volunteers and everyone else involved with our adaptive programs. Arizona Disabled Sports will ensure all adaptive equipment, supplies, and surfaces are thoroughly disinfected before and after use by participants. Sessions will be limited to further adhere to state and CDC guidelines. If additional sessions are required based on registration, accommodations will be made to ensure those interested are available to participate.
