Introduction
At North London Hospice, we are passionate about the importance of
education and training within healthcare and specialise in end-of-life
care.

The Education courses offered are stimulating and challenging,
designed to prepare learners to become outstanding providers of care in
a range of healthcare settings.

We aim to enthuse and excite learners about end-of-life care and
believe it is our responsibility to develop their knowledge, skills and
expertise in this speciality.

Palliative Care Awareness

Title     QCF Level 5 Award In Palliative Care Awareness

Who       Registered Nurses and healthcare professionals of a
          similar level
Content   This two-day course has been developed by North London
          Hospice in partnership with OCN London and Barnet and
          Southgate College to offer learners a new and exclusive
          nationally recognised qualification in Palliative Care
          awareness.
          The course will provide the learner with a comprehensive
          knowledge and understanding to provide high quality care
          to patients and their families in the palliative phase of
          their illness.

          The qualification includes:
          • The ethos and history of palliative care
          • Holistic care
          • Spiritual care
          • Symptom management at the end of life
          • Preferred place of care

Title     QCF Level 2 Award In Awareness of End-of-Life Care

Who       Health and social care professionals and those with
          little previous experience in end-of-life care seeking an
          accredited qualification
Content   This qualification provides the opportunity to develop an
          understanding of different perspectives of death and dying
          and the impact it has on individuals. It covers the aims and
          principles of end-of-life care, communication skills and
          how to access a range of support services in end of life
          care. Candidates will receive a nationally recognised QCF
          qualification (formally NVQ) on successful completion of a
          workbook

Who       Health and social care professionals, volunteers and those
          who work in emotionally challenging environments
Content   ‘Oyster’ Training is our unique approach to developing
          volunteers and staff to provide emotional support to
          patients and their families. At North London Hospice,
          everyone, staff and volunteers, are here to offer emotional
          support. To do this, everyone needs to know how to
          engage with people, how to listen and how to understand
          their own emotions and values in relation to death and
          dying. This interactive and experiential course offers
          the opportunity to develop skills and personal insight in
          providing emotional support

Who       Health and social care professionals and those involved in
          teaching or speaking to groups
Content   This one-day workshop is a must for health and social
          care staff involved in formal or informal teaching and
          wishing to improve their presentation skills.
          Participants will explore learning theories, lesson
          planning, experiential learning and evaluation.
          During the course you may be asked to present a short
          teaching session and receive group and individual
          feedback

Advanced Communication Skills

Title     Advanced Communication Skills

Who       Senior healthcare professionals (Band 6 and above),
          registrars and consultants
Content   A must for all professionals, this two day evidence
          based workshop, based on the Connected model will
          give learners the opportunity to practise advanced
          communication skills as well as give and receive feedback
          in a safe training environment.

          This course is suitable for all clinicians managing patients
          with potentially life-limiting illness. Delegates will be
          expected undertake a video recorded role-play during the
          course

Title     Effective Communication Skills

Who       All clinical and non-clinical staff including volunteers who
          through their work may come into contact with people
          approaching the end of their lives
Content   Effective communication skills are fundamental to
          providing high quality care for people approaching the
          end of their lives and to properly support those close
          to them. There is, however, much evidence to suggest
          that the healthcare workforce lack confidence and skills
          when discussing end-of-life care. This foundation study
          day explains the importance of good communication,
          explores barriers to and methods of communication and
          culminates in the opportunity to practice dealing with
          difficult conversations

Title     Understanding Loss, Grief & Bereavement

Who       All clinical and non-clinical multidisciplinary staff from
          all healthcare settings who through their work encounter
          people approaching the end of their lives
Content   It is well known that multi-disciplinary healthcare
          professionals experience loss, distress and grief in
          response to their patients’ end of life journey. These
          emotions can impact on personal well-being, leading to
          burnout, moral distress, compassion fatigue, and poor
          clinical decisions which adversely affect patient care. It
          is important that there is an awareness of the impact of
          these emotions and the choice of strategies to support
          oneself.

          On completion of this course, learners will be able to:
          • Explain the importance of understanding of loss, the
              grief process and bereavement care
          • Explore their own personal and professional
              experiences of loss, grief and bereavement which are
              central to the learning of effective and compassionate
              care of the dying patient and their family
          • Examine the need for self-care
          • Discuss strategies that provide support for people who
              are caring for dying patients and their families

Namaste Care

Title     Namaste Care

Who       Anybody who cares for those with end stage dementia

Content   Namaste is a Hindu term meaning to ‘honour the spirit
          within’. The Namaste Care programme was developed by
          Professor Joyce Simard to meet the needs of people with
          advanced dementia. The programme is based around the
          five senses, using music, massage, colour, tastes and
          scents, to connect with people and focus on wellbeing. No
          additional staff, space or expensive equipment is required

Dementia at the End-of-Life

Title     Dementia at the End-of-Life

Who       All levels of health and social care professionals who
          provide end-of-life care for people with dementia
Content   850,000 people are currently diagnosed with dementia in
          the UK and this number is expected to continue rising.
          This course aims to help health and social care
          professionals adapt their existing skills to achieve
          excellent end-of-life care for people with dementia and
          their families. Topics will include epidemiology, the
          experience of dementia, symptom management and
          ethical issues

Supporting Young People Facing
Beareavement

Title     Supporting Young people Facing Bereavement

Who       Teachers and those responsible for or working with
          children and young adults
Content   It is estimated that at any one time 70% of schools have
          a recently bereaved child on their roll. These children
          often feel isolated during their grief experience which may
          have a huge impact on their emotional and social well-
          being and on their ability to concentrate and study. Many
          teaching staff, however, find it difficult to offer support at
          this time.

          The study day will be delivered by nurses and social
          workers from North London Hospice and Noah’s Ark
          Children’s Hospice and aims to increase the confidence
          of teaching staff when supporting a child or young person
          who is going through a period of bereavement, loss or
          change

CME McKinley T34 Syringe Driver Training

Title     CME McKinley T34 Syringe Driver Training

Who       For registered nurses or doctors who set up and monitor
          McKinley T34 Syringe Drivers
Content   Two hour sessions include understanding the rationale
          for syringe driver use in palliative care, an awareness of
          medications commonly used in syringe drivers and how
          to safely set up and monitor the CME T34 syringe driver.
          3 hour sessions will also include symptom control and
          the use of syringe drivers. Following training learners will
          be able to discuss the rationale with patients and their
          families.

          Please note that participants will need to be assessed for
          competency within their own workplace

Content   We are happy to provide bespoke training tailored for the
          needs of your organisation. We can deliver any of the study
          days or training courses in this prospectus at your place of
          work. Alternatively we are happy to deliver sessions on any
          required aspects of palliative or end-of-life care. Please

Title     Educational Visits
Content   We welcome visitors from the UK and beyond and open
          North London Hospice to share our palliative care
          knowledge and expertise through private tours.
          We regularly greet international healthcare professionals
          and students from as far away as Finland, America and
          Japan. Half-day or whole-day tailored visits available on
          request throughout the year

Data protection: In accordance with The Data Protection Act 1998, we
are required to inform you that your details will be retained and held on
file for administrative purposes by North London Hospice. Please be
assured that we will not pass this information to any other organisation,
unless we have your prior consent.
Cancellations: All cancellations for bookings must be received in writing
or by email up to seven days before the planned event /workshop /
course date, there will be no charge applied. Less than seven days
before the planned event / workshop / course date, the full costs will
continue to be charged. However a substitute delegate may be sent at
any time but please inform us in writing or email of the new delegate’s
details prior to the event.
Course changes: North London hospice reserves the right to improve
the specification and format of its courses for the benefit of the
delegates without notice to the delegate. The location and date of
the course will be as advised to the delegate at the time of booking.
However North London Hospice reserves the right to change the
location of the course in exceptional circumstances and will advise the
delegate as soon as this change is known.
