When we look at the pattern of Our Lord’s life during His ministry, we see someone constantly hard at work - curing, preaching, forgiving sins and being continually surrounded by people. At the same time, He frequently made space in this life to be alone with the Father. The Gospel of Luke tells us, “The report about Him spread all the more, and great crowds assembled to listen to Dear Parishioners Him and to be cured of their ailments, BY FR. CAL CHRISTIANSEN but He would withdraw to deserted places to pray.” This simple pattern of Welcome to the blessed Season of Ordinary working and completing our daily Time! During these weeks in-between the activities, while also making time to be Seasons of Christmas and Lent, we have a alone with the Lord, is the key for how tremendous opportunity to look beyond the we can live this blessed Season of great feasts and solemnities of those seasons Ordinary Time to the fullest. The great St. and look to something much closer to home, our Bonaventure once said of prayer, “When ordinary, day-to-day lives. Finding God and we pray, the voice of the heart must be falling more deeply in love and friendship with heard more than proceedings from the Him is the great invitation of this time. In fact, mouth.” When we really pray with the we could say that walking closely with Our Lord heart and allow it to be touched and while engaged with our ordinary daily activities, transformed by the Holy Spirit, we will work and relationships, is really at the heart of slowly but surely begin to see everything living an integrated Catholic Christian life! in our ordinary lives becoming This has been true from the very beginning of transformed as well. It seems that creation. Immediately after creating Adam and Ordinary Time really isn’t all that Eve, He put them to work. “God blessed them ordinary after all! and God said to them, ‘Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that crawl on the earth.” We know that during this period before the Fall, both Adam and Eve worked and completed their daily activities. At the same time they walked closer with God and lived in an incredible communion with Him. How do we achieve this In Christ sort of living with and in God while at the same Fr. Cal Christiansen time working, performing our daily duties and responsibilities? I believe that Jesus gives us an insightful and instructive model in how to achieve this goal.
