Mierij Meteo INTRODUCTION For a long time people searched for a solution for the great economical damage that each year in the winter season occurs as a result of slippery roads. It is particular the severe damage to peo- ple, cars, environment and the effects of traffic- jams, that led to the development of a reliable, accurate and on-time predicting stand-alone early Ice Warning System. The success of this system is a result of the close cooperation of Mierij Meteo, the Dutch govern- ment and other companies. The early ice detecti- on techniques, the algorithms and the optimal ROAD MANAGEMENT system configuration have evolved from this coo- Control of road salting operations within city bor- peration. As a result it generated an Ice Warning ders has become an essential task for various System that is accurate and 98% operational communities. The government introduces tighter legal requirements to ensure safer winter condi- tions and at the same time demands a more effi- cient use of salt recourses to reduce environmen- tal pollution. These items and the increase of financial constraints demand a proper manage- ment of resources. In a large urban area the local differences due the microclimates are considerable. More than one system can be used, each stand-alone system will predict the chance that a local area becomes slippery. Mierij Meteo ICE WARNING SYSTEM Our Early Ice Warning System is an automated decision aid for the prediction of slippery roads and bad weather conditions. Using road surface and other meteorological sensors both the road surface condition and the local microclimate are measured. The system collects and analyzes all meteorological parameters and predicts the possi- bility of slippery roads up to 2 hours in advance. Mierij Meteo’s Ice Warning System not only takes measurements, but will also generate alarms to alert winter maintenance personnel to the presen- the present road condition. This system allows the ce or likelihood of a critical situation developing authorities to act in time to reduce the chance of on the road surface. slippery roads. The prediction of the road condi- tion is very reliable. This pager can contain a (KNMI) and used for years to service Dutch road numeric message to inform the road manager of authorities. IWS & WEATHER SERVICES The system can be used to inform a meteorologist who prepares a detailed road weather forecast. The meteorologist will transmit this warning directly to those responsible for road maintenance. Such forecasts enhance their ability to foresee dangerous conditions that may develop, thus providing the time necessary to put into place counter measures, such as the mobilization of personnel and equipment. At the same time the road manager can ‘look’ at the road condition with a computer or laptop at home or at work. This enables him to make decisions based on the meteorological data in combination with other given meteorological advise. To detect and analyze all these conditions a • Meteorological unit computer collects all data from the sensors. The • Road condition sensors sensors needed for this analysis are: • Presentation unit • Road surface temperature • Road surface moisture (conductivity) • Salt content • Air temperature • Relative humidity • Precipitation • Wind direction (optional) • Wind speed (optional) METEOROLOGICAL UNIT As weather conditions develop above ground, a sensor shelter is installed beside the road surface at a height of 1.5 m. The shelter also serves as a landmark for the measuring site. The following actual values are measured in the shelter: • Air temperature • Relative humidity • Precipitation presence A radiation shield, or thermometer shelter, is necessary to ensure accurate measurement of outside temperatures. The special design of the discs permits a natural flow of air through the thermometer shelter, even at very low wind speeds. This prevents the air in the radiation shield from warming up. DIGITAL PRECIPITATION clear of old precipitation. These features ensures A response time of less than 5 minutes. SENSOR The digital rain sensor is equipped with a wind During periods of precipitation the temperature of screen, which prevents the wind from interfering the sensor surface, which is normally maintained with the measurement. The sensor surface is at 3°C above ambient temperature, is increased mounted at an angle of 30°, which will keep it to 10°C above ambient temperature Mierij Meteo • Weltevreden 4c, 3731 AL De Bilt • Postbus 97, 3730 AB De Bilt Tel.: +31 (0)30 2200064 • Fax.: +31 (0)30 2204264 • Internet: www.mierijmeteo.nl • E-mail: info@mierijmeteo.nl

Ice will form much earlier on the deck of a bridge than on adjacent road surfaces. IWS to PC communications are possible over leased lines, PSTN, fiber-optic, radio etc. according to individual customer requirements. ROAD CONDITION SENSORS Conductivity (water and salt contents) and asphalt temperature are measured on site in the asphalt, preferably in each lane. If necessary, deep soil temperature sensors can be used. MEASURING UNIT The measuring unit collects all the actual measu- ring values and calculates 5-minute means. With these 5-minute averages the unit will calculated the possibility of dangerous road conditions. If so it will page. The data can be retrieved automatically or manually, this data can be used for archiving or later evaluation of past events. Mierij Meteo PRESENTATION & DATA COLLECTION The Ice Warning System PC208W soft- ware enables you to interact with the IWS datalogger using your PC. The PC208W software operates in Windows 95/98/2000/XP and Windows NT environments. The soft- ware can act as a direct online decision aid for the road manager. Real-time graphs are shown in an user defined time interval. The data can easily be retrieved in various formats for evaluation in spreadsheet programs. You can monitor real-time data, retrieve stored data, and generate simple reports. PC208W has a floating toolbar that gives you access to PC208W's primary features. This tool- bar can be resized and moved. The IWS software also provides real-time digital and graphical displays and access status screens. The software supports multiple IWS stations, thus a network of IWS stations can be established. IWS MODEM OTHER APPLICATIONS The IWS telephone modem is robust and devel- High temperatures of the asphalt and heavy oped for industrial needs. Contending with icy conditions on airfields is not really different from that on roads. The IWS is suitable for this application too. Traffic safety is the aim in both cases.
