v STATUS: Call closed and will re-open Summer 2021 ü SULSA wish to award outstanding early career scientists whose work shows excellent potential to make an impact in the field of life sciences. ü This prize allows exceptional postdocs to raise their profile in Scotland and have a prestigious award on their CV. It includes a fully-funded tour (£1,000) of three Scottish Universities where the awardee will deliver a seminar and meet with staff in order to raise their profile around Scotland, and develop their independent networks. ü In addition, the awardee will receive £2,000 of flexible funding to be used at their discretion for attending conferences, buying consumables, attending training courses or visiting collaborators etc.
v STATUS: Call closed and currently under review ü 10 applications received and are currently under review. ü Applicants could apply for up to £20,000 to support enhancements on hardware or software within microscope facilities. ü Applications will be viewed favorably if they can show how members from other SULSA Universities will benefit from this enhancement. https://scottishmicroscopygroup.org.uk/facilities-database
v STATUS: Call closed and applicants awarded in February 2021 ü 54 applications received and 19 awarded, totaling £72,000. ü This funding aims to support researchers in their endeavours to develop their own novel research track. The funds can be used for a variety of activities within these categories: Travel; Training in new techniques/skills; Consumable costs; Facility access ü The project should fulfil at least one of the following aims: Building a new collaboration (international, cross-discipline, cross-sector); Upskilling of the applicant; Generation of pilot data and/or developing a pathway to commercialisation
v STATUS: Call closed and applicants awarded in March 2021 ü 10 applications received and 6 awarded, totaling £88,350. ü Co-funding support from Innovation Centre's, IBioIC and CENSIS, totaling £25,000. ü Researchers could apply for between £5,000 – £20,000, which must be match funded by an industrial partner or show a strong case for commercialisation of research. ü Aimed at early lecturers/PIs to support development of their independent research and their affiliation with the industry sector.
v STATUS: In planning stage ü SULSA are planning an upcoming funding call to support academics in connecting with industry, with involvement from Interface ü This funding call will ease restrictions on eligibility and will be offered around a series of sandpit events with both academics and industry present Any ideas or suggestions towards this call?
SNapNET: Scottish Natural Products Network The multidisciplinary field of Natural Products includes topics such as synthetic biology, biomass and waste products and drug discovery (to name a few). We aim to create a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral network that can work toward targets such as the Scottish Government’s Net Zero by 2045 pledge and encourage the growth of the bioeconomy. Skills Development Workshops SULSA will run virtual skills development workshops during summer 2021. SULSA’s Forging Futures Scheme SULSA’s Forging Futures Scheme is currently under creation to support and develop a cohort of researchers, opening their eyes to opportunities available to them in academia and industry and equipping them with the tools to work effectively between the two. We aim to run this in autumn 2021. Each of our member universities will be able to put researchers forward to receive: ü A 1-day workshop on how to engage effectively with industry ü Group coaching sessions with MyFuturePlan to help you on your career path ü £500 toward professional development training v Get involved: if you want to learn more about this scheme, please contact Jill.Inkster@glasgow.ac.uk
Post-Academic Careers Month ü Our second Post-Academic Careers Fair took place virtually over the month of November 2020 ü This event builds upon our Post-Academic Careers Database which aims to raise awareness of the various jobs and skills available to life science researchers and the skills required for these roles ü Activities included interactive workshops, training sessions and Q&A job panel sessions v Get involved: this event will run again in late Autumn 2021 and is open to all researchers
Scottish Health & Innovation Network for Entrepreneurship (SHINE) Scottish Health & Innovation Network for Entrepreneurship (SHINE) is a new SULSA-funded network working toward bringing together innovators and entrepreneurs with ideas at the bio and or health interface, across Scotland. Various topics will be explored monthly with upcoming topics including: ü Small Molecules for Life: From antibiotics, through chemical building blocks to fuels ü Skin Deep: Dermatology linked companies ü AI and Beyond ü Diagnostics II v Get involved: this network welcomes new members to join the Committees within each SULSA member University, please get in touch with Professor Rebecca Goss at St Andrews to find out more. v Get involved: this event will run again in late Spring 2021 and is open to all
Breaking Barriers in STEM
Breaking Barriers in STEM ü Through the Looking Glass: Breaking Barriers in STEM: An action-orientated event to explore where inclusion and diversity in STEM can improve and identify actions to take forward for change. ü This event ran in October 2020 and featured an exceptional panel from across the UK and was organised by Ali Dun and two early career researchers, Ally Hughes and Kirsty Robb. ü This event marked the launch of a longer-term cross-Pool project, which will look at where the key issues lie and in understanding what we can do to address them. v Get involved: If you are interested in getting involved in this project, please contact Alison.Dun@glasgow.ac.uk

RESEARCH INNOVATION SCOTLAND Scottish Research Innovation Futures Workshops A challenge-focused workshop series, organised by Research Innovation Scotland in collaboration with KTN. This series aims to take a closer look at key challenge areas and understand how collaborative research and innovation can contribute to overcoming them in Scotland’s mission to build back better. Themes include: ü Health and Wellbeing – Case Studies open for submission ü Economic Development and Enterprise ü Just Transition to a Net Zero Carbon Society ü Climate and Environment v Get involved: The first workshop for each challenge theme will be a closed event with a cross-sectoral audience and serve as a scoping exercise. Graduate Employability Masterclasses ü Employability Workshops across University consortia which brought Industry in to talk about the pathway of concept to commercialisation in the industry setting. ü These courses are predominantly for undergraduate students but do have some spaces for postgraduate students.
