National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month To help spread awareness, CommonSpirit will be releasing a series of videos that feature diverse survivors of labor and sex trafficking. San Mateo County Updates Pending Criminal Court Cases Rainbow Bright case – filed Sept. 2018 (18SF014404A) Trial in recess due to COVID- 19 concerns. Judge Elizabeth Lee in Redwood City. The defendants— Joshua, 42; Noel, 40; Gerlen, 38; and Carlina Gamos, 67 — were charged with a total of 59 criminal counts, including human trafficking and rape. The defendants targeted members of the Filipino community, many of whom were new to the United States, for labor exploitation. Over 50 victims. De Los Reyes case – filed March 2019 (19N-F004117-B) LOST ON APPEAL, but CA Atty General may pursue. Castillo case – filed March 25, 2020 (20-NF-004379) ACTIVE Christopher Edward Castillo alleged sex trafficking of a female minor. Robinson case – filed August 30, 2021 (21-NF-010212-A) ACTIVE Alexander Robinson alleged sex trafficking of a 19 year-old female victim. Victim and DF from Florida. Arrest occurred in South San Francisco.
National Headlines In Dec. 2021, Ghislaine Maxwell found guilty in sex trafficking trial Southern Dist. of New York Convicted on five of six charges: 1. Conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of individuals under the age of 18; 2. Sex trafficking; 3. Conspiracy to entice individuals under the age of 17 to travel in interstate commerce with intent to engage in illegal sexual activity; 4. Conspiracy to transport individuals under the age of 17 to travel in interstate commerce with intent to engage in illegal sexual activity; and 5. Transportation of an individual under the age of 17 with intent to engage in illegal sexual activity. Potential sentence: 65 years in prison. No sentencing date set. Potential request for new trial by Jan. 19 due to a juror’s alleged failure to disclose childhood sexual abuse during jury selection.
