PART 1 LIVING IN AUSTRALIA: EXPERIENCING A MULTICULTURAL AND MULTIRELIGIOUS SOCIETY Australia is a diverse, multicultural, multireligious society. Our population includes Indigenous Australians - the traditional owners and caretakers of the land; the descendants of convicts and settlers who arrived on our shores with European settlement; and a wide array of migrants from around the globe. Today more than a quarter of Australians were born overseas. Australia welcomes people from all over the world and does not discriminate on racial, cultural or religious grounds. As a nation, we embrace the spectrum of religious beliefs: Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and other places of worship are found in almost every major city. Because of this diversity, it is very difficult to precisely define what constitutes “Australian culture”. However, the following may be useful for new visitors.
Greetings and Language Australians are often not very formal so greetings are usually casual. The most common Australian greeting is “g’day mate” but “hi” and “hello” are common. However, this is context dependent, try the more formal “hello” in the first instance, especially when introducing yourself to lecturers and classmates. Use of informal nicknames is common and can include the shortening of names (‘Jonno’ instead of ‘Johnathon’). It is also relatively common for people to use each others’ first names, particularly if they are of the same age or are young adults. If in doubt, feel free to use someone’s title with their last name, eg. “Mr Smith” or “Professor Jones” but don’t be surprised if you are informed that you can use their first name. Women were traditionally given “Miss” if unmarried and “Mrs” if married. But “Ms” (pronounced ‘mizz’) for either is now common and useful if you are unaware what the person prefers to be called. Some people shake hands to greet each other, regardless of gender. This is more common in a business setting. Sometimes people kiss each other once on the cheek or give a brief hug for greetings and goodbyes. Some Australians may find it awkward and impolite to be refused a handshake, which can present some difficulties for Muslims who follow stricter interpretations of touching prescriptions based on gender. If so, explain in a polite manner why it is not appropriate for you to shake the hand of a person of the opposite gender. More information about Australian Slang: insiderguides.com.au/essential-aussie-slang-international-students Socialising Australians enjoy informal socialising, and will host social functions such as dinners, barbeques or parties. Sometimes it can be “BYO” which means bring your own drinks or meat for a barbeque or “bring a plate” where each guest brings a plate with food to share with others. Although some Australians are vegetarians and vegans, and others belong to religious minorities that observe dietary restrictions, most Australians are not. Some may be uninformed about the dietary requirements of Muslims. If you have been invited to someone’s house to eat, it is a good idea to gently forewarn your host with the halal requirements you observe and/or offer to bring something to eat and share. Vegetarian options are usually available at restaurants but be aware that some foods are cooked with alcohol. Drinking alcohol is a common part of socialising among Australian adults, including in homes, at pubs and bars, as well as with dinner at restaurants and informal gatherings at work, such as after hours at the end of the week. It may help to decide ahead of time the level of comfort you have with being in the presence of alcohol consumption, to help decide the types of events you wish to attend or decline More information about Australian culture and etiquette: dfat.gov.au/about-australia/society-culture/Pages/society-and-culture.aspx www.border.gov.au/Trav/Life 4
Clothing The types of clothing that people wear reflect the diversity in Australian society, the social situation and variations in the weather. There are no laws or rules on clothing. Monash respects different cultures and styles of dress. Students generally wear casual clothing on campus. It is common for male and female students to wear jeans, t-shirts and jumpers. In the summer, students dress for comfort and can be seen in dresses, skirts, singlet tops and shorts. Australians are often expected to wear certain clothing styles in work situations. Most workplaces have dress standards but this varies on the type and location of the work undertaken. Outside the work situation, clothing style is a personal choice. Discussing Religion and Politics Australians are relatively comfortable discussing politics but may be less willing to bring up religious topics, although non-Muslims can be curious about Islam and Muslims if they have not previously had the opportunity to get to know a Muslim. If they perceive a Muslim is open to being questioned they may use the opportunity to clarify questions and ideas. Australia has no official state religion and people are free to practise any religion they choose, as long they obey the law. Australia is predominantly a Christian country, with around 61 per cent of all Australians identifying as Christians. However, most other major religious faiths are also practised, reflecting Australia’s culturally diverse society. Australians are also free to not have a religion. About 20% of Australians indicated on the most recent census that they have ‘no religion’ (this includes atheists and agnostics). If you would like support or spiritual counselling for religious or personal issues, you can contact a university chaplain to make an appointment. We have chaplains from many religions who can help with pastoral care, mentoring personal growth and workshops on scripture. monash.edu/spirituality/chaplains Gender Equality Australia does not practice gender segregation in comparison to some Muslim countries. As mentioned previously, men and women shake hands and there is no sexual inference in this type of mild touching. Australian values and laws affirm gender equality. The Sex Discrimination Act 1984 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, marital status, pregnancy or potential pregnancy in a range of areas of public activity, including work, accommodation, education, the provision of goods, facilities and services, the activities of clubs and the administration of Commonwealth laws and programs. In a 2012 global survey, Australia ranked first on a list of 128 countries for women’s access to education, equal pay, childcare and anti-discrimination policies. In addition, legislation is now in place to make it easier for men to be involved in family and caring responsibilities. Workplace gender equality www.wgea.gov.au/learn/about-workplace-gender-equality 5
Equal Opportunity Australia believes in equal opportunity. Equal opportunity means that every person can participate freely and equally in areas of public life such as the workplace, education, or in accessing goods and services. There are laws that protect people from unlawful discrimination based characteristics such as: • race, colour, national or ethnic origin, nationality • sex, gender identity, lawful sexual activity, sexual orientation, intersex status, marital status, pregnancy or • potential pregnancy, breastfeeding, status as a parent or carer • religious or political belief or activity, industrial activity • age, physical features, disability (past, present or imputed), medical record, or • personal association with someone identified by reference to any of the above. Discrimination is when people are treated less favourably on the basis of one or more of the attributes listed above. Sexual harassment is against the law. It is any conduct of a sexual nature, which is unwelcome and in the circumstances is likely to cause someone to feel offended, humiliated or intimidated. In Victoria, racial and religious vilification is also unlawful. Vilification is defined as a conduct that incites hatred against, serious contempt for, or revulsion or severe ridicule of another person or class of person on the grounds of their race or religion. Examples include jokes about cultural practices, insulting or offensive comments about a dress or ethnic stereotypes, racist posters or other printed or electronic material. If you feel you have been discriminated against, harassed or vilified on the basis of one of the attributes listed above the University can help you. Contact Diversity and Inclusion for advice and referral. monash.edu/diversity-inclusion Student Rights at Monash All students at Monash University have the right to access free advice and advocacy provided by Student Rights Officers associated with the student association on your campus. Schools In Australia, there are both government and private schools. Government schools throughout Australia provide quality education for everyone in the local region, irrespective of their means, religion or background. Although government schools are free to Australian citizens, fees are charged for children of international students. If you have a sponsorship or scholarship from the Australian Government (e.g. the Australia Award or IPRS) you will not have to pay school fees for your children at government schools. Private schools charge all students fees regardless of their citizenship status. education.vic.gov.au/findaservice study.vic.gov.au Some schools teach special religious instruction (SRI). This is not compulsory and student participation is subject to parental approval. SRI is available in several faiths including Islam.
