COMPASS GRADUATE SCHOOL 2018 // WELCOME TO THE GRADDUATE SCHOOL 11 STRUCTURE OF THE MASTERS PROGRAMMES The Masters courses at Leuphana Graduate School are organised in five superordinate subject pro- grammes: Education, Governance &Law, Humanities&Social Sciences, Management & Entre- preneurship and Sustainability. Despite the different focal points of their contents, all of the Masters courses have the same interdisciplinary basis: students had chosen their Master degree programme by selecting a core subject - their major. This accounts for the substantial part of their course and ensures they have a competitive, subject-specific profile when they graduate. The major also determines the designati- on of their final academic qualification (LL.M./M.A./M.Sc.). Students are also able to make subject-specific choices in terms of their personal interests and choice of future career. Depending on their course, they can specialise with elective modules and compulsory modules. The major, with its elective and compulsory modules, is flanked by complementary studies and intra-disciplinary research. The complementary studies, which are compulsory for all students on a Masters programme and are studied collectively, enable the students to address the specific content from a new perspective beyond the limits of their own specialist field.

This event provides Masters students with key administrative information for their degree and introduces the programme curriculum. You will have the chance to get to know the various Leuphana service facilities at an information fair and to take a tour of the campus with knowledgeable fellow students. Another key aspect of the Masters Kick-off is the Workshop Perspektivwechsel. In around twenty different groups, each for a specific programme, students look at where they are and at their personal objectives and prospects. The workshops are also an opportunity to discuss personal and academic expectations and get to know your future classmates. On the second day, the Graduate School holds its World Café on the topic of “university culture” for all its new students. This is when you can actively start to shape your degree and study style – in a whole new format. Our panel discussion on „The Future of Graduate Education” will feature leading figures from scien- ce and industry, and get the ball rolling for the workshops that follow. COMPASS GRADUATE SCHOOL 2018 // WELCOME TO THE GRADDUATE SCHOOL 21 „PERSPEKTIVWECHSEL“ WORKSHOP In the Leuphana understanding of education, scientific and academic training are closely connec- ted to personal development. Our courses seek to help students develop well-rounded personalities and a strong sense of social responsibility. Part of the Masters Kick-off event, this workshop is a space to reflect on and engage with your personal status, for your upcoming Masters demands a new look at how you learn, at your academic focus to date and at the development of your individual prospects. Tutors on the „Perspektivwechsel“ workshop will help you – individually and in small groups – to explore questions including: — What are your expectations for your Masters degree? — What can you do to make your Masters an inspiring time in which you develop at both an academic and personal level? — What contribution can the teaching staff, the Leuphana institutions and your fellow students make? Students from (European) countries which have entered into a healthcare coverage agreement usually have adequate health insurance coverage in Germany. They simply need to bring along their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). International students who do not have valid health insurance coverage in Germany can take out health insurance with a statutory health insurance company, currently at a cost of 75 Euros per month. However, no statutory health insurance coverage can be provided for students over 30 years of age. These students must take out private health insurance within 30 days of their arrival. Foreign health insurance policies must be checked by a German insurer and an exemption must be issued. The insurance must provide unlimited coverage. ACCIDENT AND LIABILITY INSURANCE All students are insured against accidents on their way to and from campus, on campus and during off-campus university activities like field trips. In the event of any such accident, please inform the International Office immediately. Please note that an accident caused by any private activity is not insured under the University’s accident insurance scheme. If you unintentionally injure someone or damage their property, this can result in an enormous cost for you. We therefore recommend that you take out personal liability insurance (German: Haft- pflichtversicherung) to cover the costs arising from any personal injuries or property damage you may cause. You can find insurance companies online or in the local phone book.
