PARTY PROGRAM The official Burnside State High School Facebook page has ‘Government organisation’ written underneath. On Wednesday 19 February, 26 students attended the ‘PARTY Program’ at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. PARTY Stands for ‘Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth’. Senior Health students given the opportunity to participate in this program were able to see the impact that alcohol and high risk behaviours have on the lives of young people. Through DVD’s, PowerPoint presentations and interactive simulated clinical scenarios, participants were able to meet health professionals, emergency services personnel and people who have experienced trauma and survived, often with significant disabilities. This was an eye opening day for our students. Everyday these young people are confronted with decisions that may change the course of their life and we know that this program has had a powerful effect on them. We hope this message of making good choices will be spread throughout the Burnside community with the purpose of saving young lives. A big thank you to the staff of Sunshine Coast University Hospital who ran the professional and interactive program and Bek Sayers (our health nurse), Mr Jessen and Mr Sergeant for assisting throughout the day. Mrs Liz Jessen - Senior Health Teacher We have a big year ahead with another group of new international students joining our Burnside community. We also have exciting news for Burnside which will add to our curriculum and also to our facilities. We have received a $5,000.00 grant from the Cancer Council for extra shade areas, a $40,000.00 grant for being a spotlight school for the STEMM program, a $20,000.00 grant from the Federal government for outdoor table tennis tables and a $28,000.00 Schools First grant to support our Aviation and Modern Drones subject.

Best times are 10am - 10:45am and 1pm - 1:30pm Year 11 and 12: A new year and our Year 12 students are continuing with their subjects from Year 11. Preparation, persistence, determination and organisation is the key for students so they can have a positive outcome for their goal of finishing year 12. The year 11 students will be delving into new subjects, which may cause stress and anxiety especially around assessment time. If your child needs, support please contact their facilitator and we will be happy to assist in any way possible. Year 10: Ms Turner has observed that the year 10s have transitioned into senior school well. They have settled into their new subjects and have already started thinking about where they may like to do their work experience in Term 3. Some of the students are participating in the garden program where they are learning all about seed germination and preparing garden beds to grow seasonable vegetables and herbs. Year 9: Mr Page is pleased that the Year 9 DLH students have had a great start to 2020. Most students are enjoying reading their English novels and practicing their Hockey skills in HPE. It is also great to see many of them attend the swimming carnival on Friday and join in many of the events. Year 8: Mr Holstein says the Year 8 DLH students appear to have adopted the “keep calm and carry on” attitude. Students have all made an excellent start to the school year and are adapting to the school schedule, class timetables and routines for each class. Thanks to the parents that responded to Mr Holstein’s email. He looks forward to making contact with everyone over the next few weeks to establish the support needs for each of the Year 8 DLH students. Year 7: T The year 7s have adapted to high school life very well. New teachers, new classrooms, a new timetable and new friends have made for a busy first few weeks of school.
