Respect ♦ Endeavour ♦ Achievement ♦ Pride YARRA HILLS SECONDARY COLLEGE PO BOX 42 MOOROOLBARK 3138 Mooroolbark Campus: Tel: 9839 8800 Mt Evelyn Campus : Tel: 9736 3650 2021 Bulletin Term 2 College Principal Report . With Darren Trippett seconded to DET for a short-term emergency replacement leave as the Senior Education Improvement Leader for Maroondah, I have stepped into the role of Acting College Principal. My aim for the past two weeks has been to provide sufficient clarity and communication to our community during this period of lockdown. At a time of such uncertainty, fatigue and stress in the community with the continually changing COVID-19 situation in Victoria, I am pleased to be able to share that the Yarra Hills Community have once again responded to the challenge of remote learning 4.0 as best they can. Our staff and students alike have done an incredible job with their flexibility to return to remote learning, having the skills and know-how from having done this three times already. The mental health of our staff and students will again be a core focus for us as we navigate not only this lockdown period, but the return to on-site, face- to-face learning. Despite this recent situation, the past month has also seen many fantastic opportunities and events across both campuses prior to the most recent lockdown. With the return of our Year 11 and 12 VCE and VCAL students, we have also been able to return to some sort of ‘normal’ for our senior cohort. Rachel Lynch Acting College Principal
Excursions In the week leading up to the lockdown, there were several excursions that students went on in that week. These included: the ‘GRIP Leadership Conference’ for students involved in the SRC; the Year 9 City Photography Excursions for Photography classes on both campuses, and; WILD Engage, a resilience and social-emotional skill-building series of excursions for select Year 8 girls from both campuses. Student Sam Kennard developed this collage from the City Photography excursion
GRIP Leadership conference held at the Melbourne Exhibition & Convention Centre WILD Engage - excursion #2 We have unfortunately had to postpone several of the other exciting things we had scheduled for this term, including the Year 10 Social and the Year 9 City Experience. Staff are busy working away behind the scenes however to make sure that these important and significant events do occur in Term 4. Senior School As is always the case, Year 12 presents many opportunities - both academically and socially for students. One of the highlights of being in Year 12 has always been the many opportunities to dress up - whether it be for Swimming Sports, Athletics Day or various events throughout the school year, students always put so much effort in. The week before lock- down, the Year 12 VCE cohort ran their ‘Disney-themed Dress Up Day’. They had a wonderful day full of Disney-themed activities during their break times and pizza for lunch. They all looked amazing! Outside of the Disney Day, students haven’t really had much of an opportunity to participate in many extra-curricular activities over the past month. They have however been extremely dedicated to their studies. Despite the challenges of Remote Learning, the Year 12 VCE cohort have returned on-site and have had an intense week of assessments in many subjects. They have all handled this extremely well. The Year 12 VCAL cohort have handled things equally as well, again managing a mixed way of learning - remote and on-site for school and many of the VET courses reverting back to being on-line. For many this has also meant a hold on all work placements once again. We are all crossing our fingers for them that things soon return to normal. Our Year 11 VCE students have spent the last week completing their Unit 1 exams. For most of them, this is the first time they have sat a VCE exam and the preparation they received, completing exams in Year 10, served them well. Congratulations to all Year 11 students who completed their exams with such resilience and determination during this difficult time.
Sports Update The Yarra Group Cross Country was held at Lilydale Lake on Friday May 7. The college finished 6th overall with 6 students progressing through to the Eastern zone finals to be held at Yarra Glen Racecourse on July 22. The students were Tiffany Snodgrass, Max Cron, Liam Kilpatrick, Jed Daniels, Ryleigh McCormick and James McDonald. The Mt Evelyn Campus Year 8 badminton team finished 3rd at the Yarra Group section. The team was Conner McCourt, Lilyella Taylor, Anastasia Avina and Alex Hall. The Mt Evelyn Campus Year 9 boys badminton team won all their matches leading up to the Grand Final where they were met the Mooroolbark Campus team. The match finished at 3 matches apiece, but the Mooroolbark team won by 10 points to progress to the Eastern Zone Finals. The Mount Evelyn team consisted of Jake Ford, Alex Lowrie, Fiann Tanner, Lincoln Howard and Brodie Drake. ‘ROCK OF AGES’ School Production update! The show must go on they say.....The cast of this year’s school production ‘Rock of Ages’ have been rehearsing twice a week for the past 6 weeks. They are thoroughly enjoying learning the classic 80’s rock songs, dancing and learning lines. Due to the lockdown, stu- dents spent 2 weeks of rehearsals on-line which was challenging but the cast enjoyed still being able to communicate and continue doing what they love. It was also a chance for students to show their families how fun the show is by belting out the songs in their living rooms and show what roles they are playing. Rehearsals are now back on-site where the cast will be directed as to the blocking of those scenes learnt on-line. Rock Of Ages will be held 19, 20, 21 August in the PAC at the ME Campus. Tickets will be available next term. Biggest Morning Tea Just prior to lockdown, teachers across the college were able to participate in the (COVID-safe) Biggest Morning Tea. It was a lovely morale-boost for us, and we raised funds for the Cancer Council Australia.
Student Leaders It has been another busy term for student leaders at YHSC this term with each student leadership team actively working towards the goals they have set at the start of the year. Students have been busy collecting student voice and working to implement some changes within the schools that they hope will improve experiences for fellow students. Royal Children’s Hospital Fundraiser At the end of last term student leaders from Mooroolbark Campus organised a Lunchtime BBQ fundraiser to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal. Students sold over 150 sausages in bread in just half an hour! The earnings from the BBQ as well as gold coins donated as part of the free dress day ended up tallying just over $600. This money was donated directly to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal. Fundraisers this term This term student leaders at both campuses have been busy organising separate fundraising events that at the time of writing this have been postponed until the last week of term. Mooroolbark leaders have decided to run a fundraiser for Fight MND - asking all students to come to school in either Blue or White. Mt. Evelyn leaders have decided to raise money for Vision Australia and are asking all students to participate in a Disney theme dress up day. School Policy Team Two students from our School Policy Team - Natalie Boxshall and Josh Carlile recently attended School Council to discuss the possibility of adding a clothing item to current school uniform that has long been proposed by students. While there is still much work to undertake in relation this, it was great to see these two students promote something that has long been suggested by students at school council. Rob Horwill
Music Notes – Term 2 The annual three-day Music Camp was held at the Portsea Camp in April, with 80 music students attending the camp. Students had many hours of band rehearsals during the camp and had the opportunity to enjoy various activities, including the giant swing, flying fox and high ropes course. As always, it was great to see our more experienced senior music students mentoring the Intermediate Band members and the Year 7 musicians during their rehearsals and activities. With around 16 hours of band and/or ensemble rehearsals during the three days, all groups had the opportunity to start work on new music for the College Concert on Monday 13 September, which promises to be another highlight of the year. Thank you to all students for their efforts during the camp - the rehearsals have made a huge difference to your playing! Thank you also to staff members for their wonderful support during the camp – David Audesho, Skye Cameron, Rachel Lynch, Sharon Phillips, Margaret Prentice, Simone Ritchie, Matthew Sheaves and Nikky Waterson. During May, the music students presented ‘Music in the Round’, a recital evening where students prepare and perform a solo or small group item in front of an appreciative audience of families and friends. The evening featured students from Year 8 to Year 12 playing a wide range of musical instruments and genres, and highlighted some of our smaller ensembles, including the Saxophone Ensemble, VCE Music Class and the Little Big Band. Congratulations to all performers! As we head towards Term 3, I would like to remind parents and the college community of the 30 Hour Music Marathon on 26 and 27 August, and the College Concert on Monday 13 September, a night where we showcase the music department at the Karralyka Theatre in Ringwood. A reminder also about our Trivia Night – ‘Flashback to the Eighties’ on Saturday 18 September – bookings for tables via email at richard.otoole@education.vic.gov.au or phone 0402-912-772. Collaborative Indigenous Strategy 2021 Action Plan The purpose of this Action Plan is to ensure Koorie students across the six schools experience a culturally inclusive education and an environment where they feel safe to stand strong in their identity. Aboriginal cultures and histories will be celebrated and learnt by the whole school community. The Strategy will arm Koorie students with greater opportunities to connect with their culture and communities and provide more pathway options, catering to the needs and aspirations of each student. 2021 is Year 2 of the Collaborative Indigenous Strategy and the key focus of the year is ensuring schools are providing a culturally inclusive environment. We aim to provide opportunities for: Student voice and agency Connection to culture Culture acknowledged and celebrated across the school Engagement in education Pathway opportunities to cater to needs and aspirations At the bare minimum, the First Nations Advocates have agreed to ensure the following occurs throughout 2021, and into future years, from here on out: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags flown every day 100% of Koorie student IEP’s completed (preferably by the End of Term 1) Acknowledgement of Country undertaken at: Assemblies Special events Signs located around the school Acknowledgement of Country, working towards implementing at: Staff meetings Homegroup or equivalent Email signatures on staff emails Koorie students to meet with the First Nations Advocate once per month. GRIP Leadership Conference On Wednesday May 26, student leaders from both campuses attended the annual GRIP Student Leadership Conference at Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Leaders participated in a range of activities on the day and have already come back to school excited to utilise some of their skills learnt on the day. Throughout the day a number of students participated in different competitions with students winning prizes on the day. Congratulations to all students who attended – they represented the school with great pride and respect! Below is a student report of the experience. Rob Horwill At the GRIP Student Leadership Conference, we did a range of activities. First of all we did a session called Time to Lead. We talked about how being a leader is a privilege and leadership roles are not about the leader themselves and how it comes with an expectation of making a difference in the school community. We then got a choice of 2 topics to do next that were Option 1: Involving More Students in Your School Events and Option 2: Creative Ideas for Your School Which Aren't Events. I did the second one with the creative idea where we talked about the things we do as a student leader does not have to be an event or club and we talked about other ideas schools have come up with, one being: having a basketball hop on bins to encourage students to put rubbish in the bin and clean up the yard. Then after that we came to our next choice that was Option 3: Improving Something You Feel is Impossible and Option 4: Keeping Your Team Motivated. I did Option 3: Improving Something You Feel is Impossible and it talked about how it could be hard to be a student leader and to keep going but it talked about ideas and things we can do to complete something we think impossible or break it down to do over time or to make it possible. In the end we had a Q & A session with the GRIP Leadership Team asking our questions and they drew a raffle. Over the day we got to speak and work with the other schools there and bring back so much learnt knowledge to our teams. Daniel Warren 8D
Kylah Brewer - Year 10 at Mooroolbark Campus (Inter-School Equestrian Competition) Kylah has had a very successful start to the first half of her 2021 Interschool Equestrian Campaign season representing the College in Eventing and Dressage this year for some fabulous results on both her horses Tonto and Kei. After some disappointing setbacks last year due to COVID as she had qualified for the 2020 State Championships on her pony Tonto and it then being cancelled, she continued to train hard over the lockdown period with the determination and drive to bounce back bigger and better than ever, as she was lucky to have also just added a new horse to the team and wanted to try and qualify again this year. Her training schedule included 5am rides before school, lunchtime tuition with her coach between classes during re- mote learning, long days and late nights just to make sure both horses remained fit and in peak condition for the year ahead whilst juggling her school studies at the same time. Her results have been nothing but outstanding and a credit to her commitment and hard work in this first half of the season and the school community is proud of her efforts. Not only did Kylah place at every Horse Trials event she attended, but made the 2021 State Championships in April and was selected in the final ride off in the Dressage class and finished 5th in the State of Victoria, an amazing effort out of 160 riders. Parents & Friends Association Update Lockdowns and severe weather haven’t stopped the Parents & Friends Association continuing with activities in 2021. Coming events include a fundraiser at Bunnings Bayswater on July 31, the Carboot Sale at the Mt Evelyn Campus on August 29, and the Comedy Night in October. The PFA meet a few times per term, and always welcome your involvement – please contact the office if you’d like further information.
