Introduction At Bradford Grammar School, we are committed to ensuring that pupils from a variety of locations can easily get to School. The School Bus Information Booklet contains all the information related to our daily bus services. All of the buses are modern, comfortable, safe, well maintained and fitted with seat belts. All drivers are experienced and have undergone all necessary child safety clearances. Whilst “buses” are the usual type of vehicle for the routes stated in this booklet, the School reserves the right to use alternative vehicles including minibuses, people carriers and cars. Buses are scheduled to arrive in good time for the start of School at 8:45am and leave promptly at 4:10pm. If you have any queries regarding the School bus service, please contact transport@bradfordgrammar.com and we will be happy to help you. **PLEASE NOTE** The bus routes have been reviewed and streamlined for 2020/2021. As a result, there are now 7 main routes (not 8) plus the Ilkley route. Some of the routes have changed significantly and the route number/name/timings may be different to previous. We therefore ask you to read this booklet attentively. We have paid careful attention to our existing users to ensure that no one is materially disadvantaged. This booklet is provisional as, depending on demand and/or Covid-19 related requirements, we may need to make amendments to ensure the most efficient running of the service. All parents will be informed of any changes and emailed the final version of the booklet at the time. How to Reserve a Seat on the Bus Seats are subject to availability and priority is given to those wishing to travel on a return basis and with the greatest distance to travel. As there is a large demand for places on some routes, the form should be completed by the deadline to secure a seat. Please read through this booklet carefully and if you wish to reserve a seat for your son/daughter, for 2020/2021, then fully complete the School Bus Seat Reservation online form as soon as possible but before 10:00am on Friday 26 June 2020. You will be contacted via email, before the start of the new academic year, with further information and to confirm whether your son/daughter has been allocated a seat. If you have any queries regarding the form, please contact transport@bradfordgrammar.com. 1

Mrs Wilson, Head of The Gleddings has very kindly offered our pupils the use of their ‘before and after’ School care, free of charge. The following is the provision they can offer: The Gleddings will welcome any BGS pupil who needs a ‘before and/or after BGS bus’ place to wait. We will happily provide (no charge) breakfast and tea (our Chef Lizzie is a legend!) and a place to be warm, dry, do homework, safe internet access and even a game of football. We open at 7:00am (earlier for anyone needing it) and close at 6:00pm (later by arrangement). We have pupils from other schools using our ‘drop in’ service on a daily basis and all BGS pupils will be truly welcome, as guests and friends. This is a very generous offer and one we hope you will use should the need arise. No pre-booking is needed. If you would like further details, please contact Mrs Karen Hewitt (BGS Admissions Manager) on 01274 553702 or khewitt@bradfordgrammar.com. 7

Bus Passes Pass Types There are 6 ways in which pupils can travel and their bus pass will be colour coded to reflect this: Pass Type Colour of Pass Return (all AMs & PMs) Blue (as shown in example 1 below) All AMs only Red All PMs only Green All AMs plus some PMs White All PMs plus some AMs White Other White Safeguarding passes, if opted for, will be yellow regardless of travel type (as shown in example 2). Example 1: Return (all AMs & PMs) Example 2: Safeguarding Pass Daily ad hoc passes will be in the form of a paper pass which must be handed over to the driver as the pupil boards. See page 11 for how to book ad hoc travel. Pupils will be issued with a bus pass which they must show the driver, each time they board, to ensure travel is not refused. The pass states the bus company’s telephone number which should be used, in the first instance, for issues like lost property or if the bus is delayed. If the bus pass is lost or damaged, contact Miss Langton on transport@bradfordgrammar.com; there will be an administrative charge of £5 for a replacement. Safeguarding for our Younger Pupils As an additional safeguarding measure for pupils in Year 2 to 7, we ask that parents opt in or out of our Safeguarding Pass system. Please see below the full details: • Pupils, whose parents opt in, will be issued with a yellow Safeguarding Pass. This means they will not be able to disembark the bus on an evening without the driver being able to see, in person, the adult due to pick up the pupil. The adult must be clearly visible to the driver i.e. standing at the bus stop and not waiting around the corner or in a car. • Pupils must hand their pass to the driver as they board and collect it as they get off. • If the adult is not visible, the bus driver will hold the pupil on the bus and wait for 5 minutes. • If after 5 minutes, no one arrives, the driver will contact the bus company office who will, in turn, contact BGS Aftercare/SLT. The driver will then continue the route with the pupil on board. • At the end of the bus route, if no one has turned up to collect the pupil, the driver will return them to School to await collection, supervised by a member of School staff. 10
Fare Information Payment Methods There are three types of payment method: 1. Annual – By paying in one annual amount, this will guarantee a seat for the whole academic year based on the days selected. There will be a reduced fare for Year 11 and 13 pupils who depart on study leave during the summer term – please see page 13 for details. There will be a 5% discount for the following annual pass types: Return, All AMs or All PMs. If All AMs plus some PMs or All PMs plus some AMs is selected, then a 5% discount will be applied to the All AMs/All PMs fare only and the other extra days will be charged at a daily rate of £4.20 per journey, regardless of zone. 2. Termly – By paying termly, this will guarantee a seat for the term that the payment applies to. There will be a reduced summer term fare for Year 11 and 13 pupils who depart on study leave during the summer term – please see page 13 for details. 3. Daily (Subject to availability) – Daily ad hoc passes must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance of the date of travel. They are not intended for regular use. Daily passes can be purchased on a single (£4.20)/return (£8.40) basis by contacting transport@bradfordgrammar.com. The date of travel, bus and stop required should be included in the email. You will then be contacted to confirm if a seat is available and how to make payment. For pupils who already use a school bus that wish to travel on a different bus, if the zone is further, the ad hoc fare will apply. Billing and Payment Settlement of the travel fare for an annual payment is collected by Direct Debit on Friday 18 September, with termly payments being collected on Friday 18 September, for the Autumn term, and then on the first day of the Spring and Summer terms. Both annual and termly payments are non-refundable. At the end of the academic year, a new agreement will be required in the form of a newly completed Seat Reservation Form if your son/daughter is to continue travelling on the School bus. Daily ad hoc passes should be purchased in advance of travel and can be paid for by cash (handed to Miss Langton in the School Office) or bank transfer. Cancellation If your son/daughter no longer requires the use of a School bus, you should inform Miss Langton at transport@bradfordgrammar.com, confirming the reason and the date the cancellation will take effect. Annual and termly payments are non-refundable. For termly payments, cancellations for the next term must be made at least half a term in advance otherwise the next full term’s fare will be charged. Please note, this includes pupils who anticipate passing their driving test. Once the cancellation date has passed, pupils will be expected to hand their bus pass in to the School Office. Fares There are 4 fare zones, based on the distance from School, in 3 mile bands (0-3, 3-6, 6-9 & 9-12). If a pupil requires the use of more than one zone i.e. different AM stop to PM, the full fare will be charged at the higher zone rate. Pupils are not permitted to use a higher zone than their pass states without prior agreement from Miss Langton; an additional charge will apply. The fare charged will depend on the zone that your son’s/daughter’s stop is in as well as the type of pass purchased. For full fare information, please see pages 12 and 13. 11

Code of Conduct for Pupils Using a School Bus Pupils are required to carefully read, and comply with, the Code of Conduct shown below. The School expects all pupils using a School bus to agree to the following Code of Conduct: Catching the bus in the morning • Arrive safely and in good time at your stop; at least 5 minutes early. The bus will not wait for late pupils. • When you are at your stop, you must stand sensibly and at all times be considerate to other pupils and members of the public. You must be stood visibly at the stop and not sat in a car. • Safely step forward and flag down the bus by putting your arm straight out in good time to ensure you are visible to the bus driver. • Have your pass ready and show to the bus driver every time you board. If you do not have your bus pass, you must give the bus driver your name and pupil number. If you are reported for not having your bus pass, more than 3 times in a half term, your Head of Year will be informed. Once on the bus • When you have found your seat, fasten your seatbelt and remain seated for the entire journey. • Always show the driver respect and on no account distract them unless in an emergency. • Behave sensibly and with consideration to the other pupils using the bus; keep noise to a minimum and do not use any offensive language. • Be sensible about where you stow your bags, keeping the aisles clear at all times. Seats must not be reserved or occupied by bags unless there is sufficient space. If a pupil requires a seat, they are entitled to remove bags and occupy it. • Do not leave any litter on the bus. Eating and drinking is at the driver’s discretion. • Do not tamper with bus fittings or damage the bus in any way. If you notice any damage to the bus, report it to the driver before you get off. • Seats located at the front of the bus should be left free for Clock House pupils. Using the bus in the afternoon • Take care approaching the bus in the turning circle and behave sensibly as you board. You must not walk through the turning circle, use the designated footpath and signs to locate your bus. You must go straight to your bus, there is to be no waiting in the turning circle area. • All buses will depart at 4:10pm therefore you must be seated, with your seatbelt fastened, before this time. • Have your pass ready and show to the bus driver every time you board. If you do not have your bus pass, you must give the bus driver your name and pupil number. If you are reported for not having your bus pass, more than 3 times in a half term, your Head of Year will be informed. If you have a yellow safeguarding pass, you must hand this to the driver and collect it as you disembark. • When nearing your stop, inform the driver by clearly stating “next stop please”. • When you get off the bus, make sure you have taken your belongings and any litter with you. • Wait until the bus has moved away before crossing any roads so that you have clear visibility. You must not change your stop, travel on an unauthorised day or use a different bus without prior permission. If you have lost your bus pass, you must report it to Miss Langton; a £5 administration charge will apply. Please remember that using the School bus is a privilege. The School will not tolerate anti-social behaviour or bullying. Such behaviour will be dealt with swiftly and may result in a temporary or permanent loss of using the School bus. A refund will not be issued if your pass has been suspended due to behaviour. 14
