CONVENTION INVITATION We invite you to join us at the 59th SCANZ Convention “COATINGS VISION” on 25 - 27 August 2021. As much as the future is still a great unknown, we feel secure enough to go ahead with the 2021 Convention. For many people, this will be the first opportunity to network with fellow industry people. We are trying something a little different for our 59th Convention, and heading to the Novotel Tainui, right in the middle of Hamilton and next to the mighty Waikato River. We have never been there before, and we are not exactly sure why. Hamilton is at the heart of the Golden Triangle - less than one and a half hours drive from Auckland, Tauranga and Rotorua. The Hamilton airport is only 15km away from the venue and has direct flights from Wellington and Christchurch. Hamilton also has some outstanding attractions, starting with the river, and moving onto the Hamilton Gardens, Zealong Tea Estate, Museum and Zoo, then moving out into the greater Waikato with Hobbiton, the Waitomo Caves, and amazing cycling, walking and hiking trails, waterfalls and for the foodies, amazing Farm to Fork experiences. The SCANZ Convention brings together researchers, chemists, sales people, manufacturers and academics from throughout New Zealand (and Australia), with around 80 - 100 delegates attending each year. We have technical papers that focus on the ‘Coatings Vision’ theme, coming from both industry and academia. Finally, we also have a fantastic social programme that allows for networking opportunities throughout the event, starting with the Dow Welcome Function, the Brenntag Quiz Night, onto the Alchemy/ Tronox Conference Dinner. We are confident that the friendly, personal nature of the SCANZ convention provides an excellent opportunity for all involved in the surface coatings industry to learn and network. Kind regards Penny, David K, Eric & Donna SCANZ Convention Committee
CONVENTION SCHEDULE WEDNESDAY 25TH AUGUST 12.30pm – NZPMA AGM & GENERAL MEETING All NZPMA members are invited to the AGM held at the Novotel Tainui. Lunch will be served first, with the AGM and then the General Meeting. If you are interested in joining the NZPMA, and attending the meeting, please contact admin@paintman.org.nz. 4pm – REGISTRATION OPENS Registration opens at Novotel Tainui from 4pm onwards 5.30pm – DOW WELCOME COCKTAILS The convention starts with the Dow Welcome Function in the Novotel Tainui for all delegates, speakers and partners. This is a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, meet the new people in the industry, and network with those we may only meet once a year. 7pm – THE BRENNTAG QUIZ NIGHT The Quiz Night is an extremely enjoyable way to start the Convention. Brenntag started this back in 2013 and the event has become more popular each year. Everyone is invited, and we encourage you to make up a team and enjoy the fun. The Quiz starts at 7pm, and will run for around 2 hours. Special thanks to Brenntag for sponsoring, organising and running this fantastic event! THURSDAY 26TH AUGUST The Technical Programme starts at 8.30am with a Welcome from the President, then onto a full day of presentations from some extremely interesting speakers. 6.30pm – CONVENTION DINNER – “KIWIANA” After a full day’s sessions, we move onto the Convention Dinner. To keep our ‘bubble’ small, we will be staying in the hotel for the themed dinner “Kiwiana”. This theme can cover everything from nature (kiwi and pukeko) to food (pavlova to kiwifruit) to sports (70’s cricket anyone?) then onto cultural identity (4 square, Fred Dagg, Camp Leader and Mother, jandals, L&P) there should be something for everyone. If you want some inspiration, google “kiwiana dress up”. There will, of course, be prizes for the best outfits, names, and maybe also to the best ‘hidden’ weapons. There will, of course, be the yearly update by our President, Eric Baggen. FRIDAY 27TH AUGUST The Technical Programme starts at 9.30am (no early starts after a Convention Dinner!), and finish in the afternoon. For those wanting to continue the networking and have some fun, we are coming up with some activities and dinner options for Friday night.

HELPFUL INFORMATION GETTING TO HAMILTON DRIVING: 7 Alma Street, Hamilton Hamilton is in the centre of the Golden Triangle, and is an easy drive from Auckland, Tauranga and Rotorua. Auckland - 124kms from the CBD. The drive is normally 1.5 hours, dependent on traffic, with motorways and bypasses most of the way. (Fog can sometimes be an issue and will extend the drive significantly, so check the weather and road reports.) Tauranga and Rotorua - around 100kms from each City. The drive is around 1.5 hours dependent of traffic and conditions (lots of hills). FLYING into Hamilton Airport: 7 Alma Street, Hamilton The airport is only 15km from the Novotel Tainui Hotel, and has around 5 daily direct flights from both Wellington and Christchurch. Hire Car - All major rental car companies are at the airport. Taxis - There are 2 taxi companies servicing the airport, and can be picked up outside the arrival gate. Uber - Just download the app and book from there. For those people flying into Hamilton domestically, we recommend you book your flights early to take advantage of the low fares. Only Air New Zealand (www. airnewzealand.co.nz) operates regular flights from the main centres each day, and there are some very good fares available at the moment. For international travellers, we suggest that you try to allow yourself at least a day in which to adjust to the time difference and relax after your flight, before the Convention commences. Travellers flying westward across the Pacific Ocean are reminded that they will lose a day by crossing the International Date Line. The ‘lost day’ will be returned on the return journey. WEATHER With the convention being at the end of the NZ winter, we can expect it to be cold, wet and windy. The temperatures normally ranges from 4° - 16° at that time of year, with a 35% chance of rain, but this is New Zealand, so be prepared for wind, rain, sun, fog, hot and cold. Our best advise is dress for cold and wind when outside, but remember we will be in air conditioned rooms during the convention. WI-FI Delegates can enjoy free WiFi with no data cap or time limit for the duration of the convention. DIETARY REQUIREMENTS Please advise of any dietary requirements when registering so we can ensure you are catered for. HEALTH & SAFETY All cleanliness and protocol standards are being followed in regards to Covid-19 and we are following the Event Sector Voluntary Codes to ensure everyone’s health and safety. We do ask that if anyone feels sick, or has been near anyone who may have Covid-19 to please not attend unless you have had a clean Covid-19 test. Thanks to our sponsors
