WELCOME A very warm welcome to Warwick district’s annual Heritage Open Days. We are proud to be part of England’s biggest and best heritage festival involving over 40,000 volunteers and 5000 events. This year’s event is taking place over two weekends, giving you twice as much time to visit buildings, gardens and places of historic interest not normally open to the public, free of charge. There are a total of 50 venues for you to visit and explore and it would be great if you could share your photos with us via Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using #DiscoverHODWarwick I would like to give my thanks to the many volunteers who have kindly given up their time to organise all the activities taking place this year. ROYAL LEAMINGTON SPA During this year’s Heritage Open Days why not take the opportunity to take a closer look at some of Leamington’s magnificent churches with their beautiful stained glass, there will be volunteers on hand to show you around. There’s also a chance to find out more about the town’s history with a number of guided walks around the parks, buildings and cemeteries, or take a fascinating tour of the Royal Pump Rooms or the world’s oldest Real Tennis Club. Once you are finished there should still be time for some shopping and well-earned refreshments in one of Leamington’s amazing cafes or restaurants. 5

SOUTH LODGE, JEPHSON GARDENS Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 | 12.30pm - 4pm South Lodge, Jephson Gardens, (Parade Entrance), Parade, CV32 4AA South Lodge is home to a permanent exhibition in photographs of the history of Jephson Gardens from its beginning as an arboretum to its achievement of Green Flag status. Volunteers from the Leamington History Group will be on hand to answer questions. WARWICK Even more of Warwick’s historic buildings are opening their doors for Heritage Open Days this year, with the chance to take a look inside the distintive blue door of Landor House, before King’s High School moves to its new location. Once again there is the opportunity to explore a living legacy dating back serveral centuries at the Lord Leycester Hospital and take a tour of the recently refurbished Old Shire Hall and Judges’ House. If that’s not enough why not take a guided walk around the town and if you have time take a tour of the bell chamber high in St Mary’s church tower, the views of Warwick from the top are truly outstanding! 12

Its aim is to safeguard the heritage and collective memory of those who have served with the Warwickshire Yeomanry. The collection is housed in five rooms within the basement of The Court House Warwick. It covers the period 1794 to 1956 when the Warwickshire Yeomanry amalgamated with The Queen’s Own Worcestershire Hussars. 19
KENILWORTH Take yourself back one-hundred years this Heritage Open Days weekend, with a World War One themed guided walk of Kenilworth, with a chance to hear the stories and see the homes of the servicemen and the buildings that were put to war-time use. If you want to go back even further in time you can take a tour of the Kenilworth Abbey ruins find out more about the town’s local history in the Kenilworth Abbey ‘Barn’ Museum and Heritage Centre. 20

PACKWOOD HOUSE Saturday 15 | 9am - 5pm Packwood Lane, Lapworth B94 6AT Surrounded by beautiful gardens and countryside, Packwood was described by a guest in the 1930s as ‘A house to dream of, a garden to dream in’. Lovingly restored at the beginning of the 20th century by Graham Baron Ash, the house contains a wonderful collection of 16th century furniture and textiles. The gardens include herbaceous borders, sculpted yews and an 18th century gentleman’s kitchen garden with herbs, flowers and vegetables. Through the generosity of the Clifford family and others, Fr Marsh built St Anne’s around 1854. The interior has a very fine 15th century brass dedicated to Sir William Bagot Friday 7 and Saturday 8 | 10am - 4pm and his wife Margaret, together with 17th and 18th Sunday 9 | 11.15am - 4pm century mural tablets and 18th century panelling. Church Hill, Bishop’s Tachbrook, CV33 9QX Take a look around this wonderful church dating from the 12th to 15th century and overlooking the timber framed houses in the village. All the stained glass windows are of historical interest and include the work of Kingsley, William Morris and Philip Webb. The church also has remains of mediaeval wall paintings. There is a pulpit hamlet of Hunningham. This interesting 13th century from 1600 and an 18th century wrought Iron church with 19th century additions has a wooden Communion rail. There is also a timber porch and small wooden bellcote with a buttress on porch and bellcote with spirelet; and the west wall with some eye-catching features. two windows designed by Pugin. ST MARY’S CHURCH, CUBBINGTON Thursday 6 to Saturday 8 | 10am - 5pm Sunday 9 | 11am - 5pm Church Lane, Cubbington, CV32 7JT A chance to visit this Grade I listed Norman Church dating from the 12th Century with exceptional stained glass windows and a bell tower where bells were hung in the 1600s and have been rung ever since. The church is surrounded by an award winning churchyard. Join us for St Mary’s patronal festival on Sunday 9 September from 3pm. 28
ST PETER’S CHURCH, BARFORD Thursday 6 to Sunday 9 and Thursday 13 to 16 | 9.30am - 6pm Sunday Service 9.30am - 10.45am Church Street, Barford CV35 8BS There has been a church on this site since Saxon times. The present church was built in the 1840s, with the exception of the tower which is 14th century, it has a ring of six bells and bullet holes left during the Civil War are still visible. In the churchyard is the grave of Joseph Arch who was born in a nearby cottage. He was the founder STONELEIGH CHURCH of the National Union of Agricultural Labourers, his tomb is marked by an obelisk. Saturday 8 | 10am - 4pm Church Lane, Stoneleigh, CV8 3DN Stoneleigh Church was built in the 12th century and has a Norman arch and box pews. The church underwent restoration in 2016 with repairs to the stonework and a new copper roof. Stoneleigh History Society has an exhibition in the Leigh Chapel entitled ‘ Centuries of Change and Renewal.’ 29
