BASIC TENNIS RULES Start of Match - Toss At the start of each match a toss takes place to determine who is to serve/receive or choice of ends. 1. A toss is made at the start of each individual match 2. A team toss for all matches is not acceptable 3. Whoever wins the toss has the choice of one of the following: To serve To receive Choice of ends You can make your opponent make one of the choices Eg. if you elect to serve your opponent can choose which end they receive from or if you elect to receive your opponent can choose which end they serve from Serving: The foot must not touch any part of the base line before the ball makes contact with the racket If the receiver hits a serve on the full the point will go to the server regardless as to where the serve is going to land All serves must bounce in the correct service box before the receiver can return the ball The server may throw the ball up into the air more than once as long as the ball has not been swung at by the racket If the server throws the ball into the air and swings the racket and misses the ball, it is a fault A player may serve underarm as long as the ball is not bounced first Encourage players to serve over arm Net Calls: When serving and the ball hits the net the ball must land in the correct receivers service box for a net call. If this happens you have that serve again. If it hits the net and does not land in the correct services box it is a Fault. Line Calls: If the ball hits any part of the line the call is in. 7
Hitting the ball on the full/Player being hit on the full If you are standing outside any line eg. base line or sidelines and you hit the ball on the full it is taken as being played at. If ball is not returned inside the court of the opposing player you will lose the point. If the ball hits/touches the player or anything the player is wearing or carrying (except the racket) on the full whether the player is standing inside or outside the court, the touched player shall lose the point. Scoring: The server is responsible for keeping the score. Calling the servers score first. A player can only make a call on their side of the court. If a player does not know whether the ball was in or out the ball will be called in and the point will go to the opponent. The point is not replayed. GUIDE LINES FOR SELF UMPIRING All players are required to self umpire Players are required to make calls on their end of the court only In singles matches if a player is unsure of the call (eg. whether the ball was in or out) the ball will be taken as in. The point is not replayed. In doubles if players from the same team do not agree on a call (eg. whether the ball was in or out) the ball will be taken as in. The point is not replayed. A player can not make a call on their opponent side of the court In the case of Junior C where players are learning to self umpire, a supervisor may support players in self umpiring and to ensure fair play Other grades and tournaments: if problems continue an adjudicator can be appointed for the rest of the match The role of an adjudicator is to ensure that correct calls are made, correct scoring is kept and to ensure that fair play continues 8
