R E F O R M AT I O N S U N DAY October 31, 2021 P SA LM 1 0 0 William Kethe For Christ, for His kingdom, and for the common good. Since 1814.
O C TO B E R 3 1 , 2 02 1 Reformation Sunday WORDS OF PREPAR ATION At last meditating day and night, by the mercy of God, I began to understand that the righteousness of God is that through which the righteous live by a fit of God, namely by faith. Here I felt as if I were entirely born again and had entered paradise itself through the gates that had been flung open. —Martin Luther, 1483–1546 ORDER OF WORSHIP †VOLUNTARY Concerto in D, RV 93 Antonio Vivaldi, arr. Carol McClure WELCOME +INTROIT Deep River arr. John Rutter Deep river, my home is over Jordan; deep river, Lord: I want to cross over into camp ground. Oh, don’t you want to go to that Gospel feast, that promised land where all is peace. Deep river, my home is over Jordan, oh, deep river, Lord: I want to cross over into camp ground. *CALL TO WORSHIP | based on Heidelberg Catechism, Q. 1 Rev. Sarah Bird Kneff (8:30) Rev. Adam DeVries (11:00) Pastor: What is your only comfort, in life and in death? All: That I belong—body and soul, in life and in death—not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood, has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil. Pastor: Christ protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head. All: Indeed, everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Pastor: By his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, All: And makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him. Pastor: Therefore, let us lift our voices in praise! All: And let us worship God! *†OPENING HYMN 275 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Ein’ Feste Burg *PR AYER OF ADOR ATION Frank Bass (8:30) Marbut Gaston (11:00) FIRST LESSON | Romans 12:1–2 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Leader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.
CALL TO CONFESSION Rev. Joshua Rodriquez (8:30) Dr. Stuart Gordon (11:00) PR AYER OF CONFESSION | John Calvin Lord God, eternal and almighty Father: We acknowledge before your holy majesty that we are poor sinners, conceived and born in guilt and in corruption, prone to do evil, unable of our own power to do good. Because of our sin, we endlessly violate your holy commandments. But, O Lord, with heartfelt sorrow we repent and turn away from all our offenses. We condemn ourselves and our evil ways, with true sorrow asking that your grace will relieve our distress. Have compassion on us, most gracious God, Father of mercies, for the sake of your son Jesus Christ our Lord. And in removing our guilt, also grant us daily increase of the grace of your Holy Spirit, and produce in us the fruits of holiness and of righteousness pleasing in your sight. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. A moment for silent confession. ASSUR ANCE OF PARDON Pastor: The Lord Jesus, by his perfect obedience and sacrifice of himself, which he through the eternal Spirit once offered up unto God, hath fully satisfied the justice of the Father; and purchased not only reconciliation, but an everlasting inheritance in the kingdom of heaven, for all those whom the Father hath given unto him. Friends, believe the good news of the Gospel, that in Christ Jesus there is indeed forgiveness for everyone who calls upon his name. All: Alleluia! Amen! *RESPONSE OF GR ATITUDE 581 Glory Be to the Father Gloria Patri *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH | Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. Whether you are a longtime member or a guest, please mark your presence by signing the friendship pad and greet those seated near you as you pass it along. ‡ BLESSING OF THE YOUNG DISCIPLES Children who are age 4, 5, or 6 (not in 1st grade) are invited to join Young Children & Worship. HYMN OF PREPAR ATION 385 All People That on Earth Do Dwell Old Hundredth PR AYER FOR ILLUMINATION
SCRIPTURE RE ADING | Psalm 100 1 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! 2 Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! 3 Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! 5 For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. Pastor: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. SERMON His Goodness Is Running after Me Dr. Ryan Moore For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever. –Psalm 100:5 OFFERTORY Jesu, Lover of My Soul Philip W.J. Stopford | Charles Wesley Jesu, lover of my soul, let me to thy bosom fly, while the nearer waters roll, while the tempest still is high; hide me, O my Saviour, hide, till the storm of life be past; safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last! Other refuge have I none; hangs my helpless soul on thee; leave, ah! Leave me not alone, still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring; cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing. Thou, O Christ, art all I want; more than all in thee I find. Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name; I am all unrighteousness. False and full of sin I am; thou art full of truth and grace. Plenteous grace on thee is found, grace to cover all my sin. Let the healing streams abound; make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art; freely let me take of thee. Spring thou up within my heart. Rise, to all eternity. Amen. NEWS & EVENTS Today Is Reformation Sunday — It all started on All Saints’ Eve, 1517, when Martin Luther publicly objected to the way preacher Johann Tetzel was selling indulgences. These were documents prepared by the church and bought by individuals either for themselves or on behalf of others that would release them from punishment due to their sins. Martin Luther, in his reading of Paul’s letter to the Romans, came to recover the doctrine of justification—that it is by grace alone, through faith alone, that we are saved from our sins. Organ Recital | Today | 12:20 p.m. | Sanctuary — To commemorate Reformation Sunday today, Peter Rogahn will present a 30-minute organ recital following worship. The program includes works by Bach, Nashville native Craig Phillips, and Max Reger—a dramatic fantasy on the beloved Reformation hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” All Saints Service and Lunch | November 1 | 12:00 p.m. | Sanctuary — Tomorrow at noon, the church will offer a worship service with a time to remember and give thanks for the lives and Christian faith of those we have lost in the past year and a half. All who wish to attend are encouraged to do so. A light lunch (donation- based) will follow in Courtenay Hall; if you plan to eat with us, please contact Sabrina Vlahos (svlahos@ fpcnashville.org or 615-298-9509). Parents, please encourage your youth to respond to their prayer partner’s invitation. All youth are invited to attend, regardless of the availability of their prayer partner. Presentation by Haitian Pastor Leon Dorleans | November 7 | 9:45 a.m. | Session Room — On Sunday, November 7, Pastor Leon Dorleans will share compelling good news about how God is at work in Haiti—the poorest country in the western hemisphere—even in the midst of natural disasters, violence, and corruption. Pastor Leon is the founder of Haiti Outreach Ministries, a ministry partner of the Outreach Foundation, which FPC generously supports. He will give a presentation on his work during the Family Fellowship Class, which meets in the Session Room. All are welcome to attend.
