Evaluation of 2021 ASA RMD Meeting Q11 Please tell us in general terms what was problematic or acceptable with regard to the climate of the meeting? Answered: 20 Skipped: 4 # RESPONSES DATE 1 The climate was excellent. Overall, the meeting was terrific fun. 8/1/2021 11:22 PM 2 Good organization, conversation, room temp, scheduling 7/31/2021 2:36 PM 3 I enjoyed the friendly, casual, and conversational environment. 7/26/2021 10:30 AM 4 Very fun, laid-back group, not the typical stuffy academic atmosphere of most conferences. 7/26/2021 9:15 AM 5 N/a 7/26/2021 6:33 AM 6 very hospitable and welcoming 7/23/2021 9:51 AM 7 N/A 7/22/2021 3:21 PM 8 Everything was great! 7/22/2021 2:05 PM 9 It seemed very opening and welcoming. 7/21/2021 10:43 AM 10 Collegiality 7/21/2021 7:18 AM 11 Respect and generous listening/attention were in evidence at every session. Even a non- 7/20/2021 8:01 PM professional like me felt engaged. 12 The distinctions between "problematic or acceptable with regard to the climate of the meeting" 7/20/2021 6:27 PM is puzzling, to me. 13 Everything was wonderfully respectful. 7/20/2021 5:05 PM 14 most people I interacted with were very welcoming. 7/20/2021 3:23 PM 15 In general, the climate was good. But one incident made me upset. I had a conversation with a 7/20/2021 1:51 PM professor about philosophy job market. The person was saying with certainty and a discouraging tone that for a foreigner it would be impossible to get a philosophy job in the U.S. considering the number of American unemployed now (although he/she knew that I was an international student considering to apply for a job in the U.S.). It seemed a little discriminatory to me, even though there might be some truth in what the person was saying. But again, in general I think the climate was good; thank you! 16 While my project is outside the formal disciples of philosophy and aesthetics, I have always 7/20/2021 1:47 PM felt comfortable contributing my perspective. And I have not ever seen anyone ‘shutdown’ at any of the meetings or sessions I have attended. Rather, I have always found ASA-RMD open and welcoming. 17 In my experience, the RMASA is always very open and welcoming in terms of climate. 7/20/2021 1:20 PM 18 Everyone seemed respectful; I observed no problematic behaviors. 7/20/2021 1:16 PM 19 It was awesome!!! 7/20/2021 1:11 PM 20 Although the ombudsman was not, in fact, there I was aware that there was a representative of 7/20/2021 12:59 PM the ombudsman there. The climate was, as far as I could tell, supportive and respectful. 12 / 19
Evaluation of 2021 ASA RMD Meeting Q12 What were the most beneficial elements of the meeting for you professionally? Evaluation of 2021 ASA RMD Meeting Q13 What were the least beneficial elements of the meeting for you professionally? Answered: 19 Skipped: 5 # RESPONSES DATE 1 n/a 8/1/2021 11:22 PM 2 I didn’t attend the luncheon because my paper was immediately after and I wanted to be 7/31/2021 2:36 PM rested. 3 The artist keynote was not particularly appealing to me. 7/26/2021 9:15 AM 4 The WiFi was fairly slow in my room. 7/26/2021 6:33 AM 5 nothing 7/23/2021 9:51 AM 6 N/A 7/22/2021 3:21 PM 7 The early starting point and limited access to amenities (e.g. breakfast) for those not staying 7/22/2021 2:05 PM at the hotel and needing to drive/walk there. 8 Hard to say. Perhaps the papers on topics that I'm not interested in, but I could go to papers 7/21/2021 10:43 AM that did interest me instead. It's good to have a wide range of topics and ideas represented. 9 None 7/21/2021 7:18 AM 10 None 7/20/2021 8:01 PM 11 Don't know. Wasn't there. But I usually don't register with any Conference Hotel. Too much 7/20/2021 6:27 PM chatter. 12 Having to choose among wonderful sessions and thus miss some great ones 7/20/2021 5:05 PM 13 Social chat at breakfast and happy hour but that serves other purposes. Not a complaint. Ditto 7/20/2021 3:23 PM the awards at the business meeting. 14 Nothing 7/20/2021 1:51 PM 15 There were none for which I would say this. I found benefit in all of the sessions I attended. 7/20/2021 1:47 PM 16 N/A 7/20/2021 1:20 PM 17 A few of the papers I observed had little to do with aesthetics. 7/20/2021 1:16 PM 18 N/A 7/20/2021 1:11 PM 19 Sessions were a bit early (830 am is a difficult start time) and a bit short. 7/20/2021 12:59 PM 14 / 19
Evaluation of 2021 ASA RMD Meeting Q14 What could the Division do to improve future RMD meetings? Answered: 20 Skipped: 4 # RESPONSES DATE 1 Record the presentations or make the papers available online to those at the conference. 8/1/2021 11:22 PM There were a few presentations I would have liked to have attended, but wasn't able to due to parallel scheduling. 2 The reception was noisy due to it being in a public area. I am not sure that can be addressed. 7/31/2021 2:36 PM 3 I think two concurrent sessions maximum makes more sense than three, especially for early 7/26/2021 11:49 AM time slots (e.g., 8:30am). 4 It would be nice to have abstracts of papers to consult in advance. 7/26/2021 10:30 AM 5 Increase Indigenous/local presence; raise awareness of local art opportunities (opera, gallery 7/26/2021 9:15 AM openings, perhaps discounts on area museums); perhaps have informal gallery space at the conference (tables, conference rooms, etc) where presenters who are also practitioners could display (or perform, as the case may be) and discuss works with attendees. 6 N/a 7/26/2021 6:33 AM 7 unsure. 7/23/2021 9:51 AM 8 I wouldn't mind a group activity - trying to get a deal to the Santa Fe opera or private gallery 7/22/2021 3:21 PM tour. I think for folks who don't already have friends at the meeting it might be harder to set up dinner plans or social plans - and a lot of work gets done informally (so I liked the kickback). 9 Include abstracts for talks and titles of keynotes in the program. 7/22/2021 2:05 PM 10 Perhaps make it easier to talk with a wider range of people from the group at the receptions. 7/21/2021 10:43 AM 11 Can't think of any 7/21/2021 7:18 AM 12 No suggestions to offer 7/20/2021 8:01 PM 13 Make sure that Dr. Mock and I receive information about Chayes Grants and Philosophy 7/20/2021 6:27 PM Awards candidates promptly, upon submission of Abstracts. Pronto. 14 Make clear how each presenter could easily display ppt -- e.g. have Mac hdmi adaptors in 7/20/2021 5:05 PM each room. 15 In terms of organizing the meeting, everything seemed good to me. 7/20/2021 1:51 PM 16 I cannot at present think of anything to improve the meetings. 7/20/2021 1:47 PM 17 More opportunities for young scholars to network with more senior scholars. 7/20/2021 1:20 PM 18 Be more vigilant in ensuring that the papers are relevant to aesthetics. Also, make sure ahead 7/20/2021 1:16 PM of time that all equipment is working properly. I attended one session and chaired another in which we lost 10 minutes at the beginning because of a faulty computer cord. 19 Dunno 7/20/2021 1:11 PM 20 I might cut breaks to 15 minutes to get a bit more time for sessions and/or allow for a slightly 7/20/2021 12:59 PM later start. 15 / 19
Evaluation of 2021 ASA RMD Meeting Q15 Please share with us any other comments, recommendations, or suggestions on the 2021 ASA RMD meeting that you might have. Answered: 16 Skipped: 8 # RESPONSES DATE 1 I met some great people, had some fantastic conversations, and very much look forward to 8/1/2021 11:22 PM returning in the future. 2 I recommend having an indigenous speak as a keynote. 7/31/2021 2:36 PM 3 The organizers made a wonderful choice of venue, both city and hotel. I never had to use my 7/26/2021 10:30 AM car once I parked it at the hotel. 4 Thank you for another great meeting! 7/26/2021 9:15 AM 5 N/a 7/26/2021 6:33 AM 6 not certain 7/23/2021 9:51 AM 7 See above. 7/22/2021 3:21 PM 8 Thank you for an excellent return to in-person conferencing! 7/22/2021 2:05 PM 9 I thought the organization was excellent. I was impressed by the quality of the papers. Things 7/21/2021 10:43 AM stayed on time, and the hotel was very convenient and comfortable. 10 Well done, good, always a delightful gathering 7/21/2021 7:18 AM 11 None 7/20/2021 8:01 PM 12 Very glad to see that the Awards and Grants were accomplished. 7/20/2021 6:27 PM 13 This was so good. The people are good. The talks are good. The location is good. The hotel is 7/20/2021 5:05 PM good. Okay, maybe a microphone for soft spoken presenters. 14 I have nothing else to add. I had a wonderful time. Heard some excellent papers was exposed 7/20/2021 1:47 PM to ideas I had not considered. Saw some old friends and made some new friends. I could not ask for more. 15 Nothing other than the above. While I am not in position to commit to helping to organize a 7/20/2021 1:16 PM divisional meeting, I would be happy to help with putting together the name tags for the RMD. meeting. This year's were pretty disappointing, and I have experience doing this for the ASA Eastern and other conferences. 16 It might be worth trying to engage with local arts institutions (Site Sante Fe, CCA 7/20/2021 12:59 PM Cinematheque). 16 / 19
