The men’s competition schedule from 29th February to Easter is included in this edition of Breaking Points. The Hanley Cup and the Jackson Cup (open competition) qualifiers are in March with the Visitors Cup in April. As a point of interest to members, a short history of these prestigious cups, courtesy of Tony Cunningham, is included. The Wehrly Bros. Winter League has reached its half way stage -the final day and presentation will be on 29th March. All to play for! This year’s West of Ireland Championship at Easter i.e. 10th -14th April, with the qualifier on 8th April, has a change in format with 54 holes of stroke play with 16 to qualify for matchplay. Past Captain, Michael Mc Gowan R.I.P. Past Captain, Michael McGowan sadly passed away on 28th January. Michael, a native of Sligo, was a teacher of English and History in Summerhill College, and an avid sports fan and renowned quizmaster. Michael had excellent organisational abilities and communication skills, qualities which stood to him in his role as Captain of County Sligo Golf Club in 2011. The highlight of Michael’s year as Captain was when County Sligo Golf Club hosted the Men's Home Internationals in Rosses Point where the Irish team was proudly represented by local members, Dr. Kevin Flanagan as captain of the Irish team and player Gary Mc Dermott. Michael's contribution to our Club over the years, in his role as Captain, committee member; organiser; member and player will always be appreciated and Michael will be sadly missed by his many friends in County Sligo Golf Club. Tip of the week Playing in windy conditions is part and parcel of west of Ireland golf and keeping the flight under control essential to topping the leaderboards. Try placing the ball position just slightly further back in your stance and making your left hand a little stronger on the grip to keep the clubface under control. Links Update by Mark Millar Over the past few weeks the team continue to work on the winter programme. We have stripped and re-levelled tee's on 7 and 9 on the championship course and the ladies tee's 1,7 & 9 and the men's 9th in Bomore. All these tee's will be re-turfed this week and will be ready for play come the start of the new golfing season. We are continuing to rebuild bunkers on the championship course with the left Greenside on 8 getting completed this week. After that we will be rebuilding all bunkers on the 9th hole. The front bunker will be built with the Eco sod, (same as practice bunkers) this will get starting on Monday 10th February. This bunker is a high impacted bunker, so it is important that we get the re-build right. The left fairway bunker on 8 was reshaped, we merged the two bunkers into one to make them look more natural.
Links Update by Mark Millar At the same time we made a small adjustment to the right mound on 12th to also make it more natural. Some Marram grass will be added to help blend it into the dunes. New steps have been added to the drain at 7. If these steps turn out to be successful we will be replacing them all. Greens have now been verti-drained over two weeks and are on their way to recovery. We have applied top-dressing to help smooth them out. We are still cutting greens once a week at 6.4mm in height. Over the next few months it is important to keep good grass coverage on them as weather can be harsh in February and March.
New Mats in the Driving Range New Mats With Training Aid Markings No excuses now not to get down to the Driving Range at Co Sligo Golf Club to get your game in shape for the season ahead. Our new Mats were installed this week so why not grasp the opportunity to try them out over the coming weeks. Good Golfing for 2020 David O'Donovan
West of Ireland Amateur Open The West of Ireland Championship Committee having recently convened have agreed the Terms of Competition for the 2020 Championship. The Committee reflected on what was the acknowledged success of the first staging of the championship in 72 Hole stroke play format in 2019. In keeping with the strong traditions of the Championship and the excellent partnership in the hosting and running of the championship between County Sligo Golf Club and Connacht Golf, the Championship Committee have unanimously agreed, on a two year trial, to amend the traditional format of 36 hole stroke play followed by match play knockout for the leading 64 players. In 2020 and 2021, the Championship shall be decided by 54 holes of stroke play over three consecutive days from which the leading 16 players shall then compete in knockout match play over the remaining two days to determine the champion. The championship shall therefore remain as a five-day event commencing on Good Friday and finishing on Easter Tuesday. The now customary 18 Hole stroke play qualifier shall remain and will take place on Wednesday April 8th, 2020. The 2020 West of Ireland Amateur Open Championship shall be played from April 10th – 14th inclusive and marks the first of ten events in the GUI's Bridgestone Order of Merit. 2019 West of Ireland Winner Caolan Rafferty

Golf Rules Quiz 1. Player B's ball was lying badly. B was deliberating what action to take when player A, his marker, said: "You have no shot at all. If I were you, I would declare the ball unplayable." What is the ruling? A. A is penalised two strokes for giving advice and, if B follows that advice, he too will incur a two stroke penalty. B. As A's suggestion could have influenced B "in determining his play", it constituted advice and A is penalised two strokes. B is not penalised. C. A gave B information on the Rules and, hence, no penalty is incurred by either player. 2. When lifting a ball to see if it is cut or cracked, a player may clean the ball to the extent that is needed to see if cut or cracked. A. False B. True 1-B As A's suggestion could have influenced B "in determining his play", it constituted advice and A is penalised two strokes. B is not penalised. Such a comment is advice because it could have influenced the player in deciding how to play the hole. During a round, a player must not give advice to anyone in the competition playing on the course. See Rule 10.2a and Interpretation Advice/1. 2-A False. When a ball is lifted from a part of the course other than a putting green to see if it is cut or cracked, cleaning is not allowed (Rule 14.1c)
