                                  General information
Conference Venue & parking
This year we are returning to the Ernest and Marion Davis Library at Auckland City Hospital for our 3 day
conference. There are two carparks at Auckland City Hospital: Car Park A – situated in front of the hospital
and accessed from Park Road; Car Park B – situated behind Starship and accessed from Grafton Road or
Park Road. Please see the attached map for the location of both the library and car parks.

Hours
The conference will run on Friday 8.30am – 5pm and Saturday 8.30am – 4.30pm. In consideration of your
colleagues who will be presenting on Saturday afternoon, please delay travel arrangements until after the
conclusion of the conference.

Accommodation
Some recommendations close to the hospital include:
          Domain Lodge has limited accommodation within 5 mins walk of the hospital -

Meals
Conference registration costs include morning and afternoon teas and lunch meals to suit all dietary
requirements. We would appreciate advice on the registration form of any dietary requirements to ensure
your needs are met.

Pre-conference Intensive
We are pleased to offer a pre-conference workshop facilitated by Dr Bernie Whitaker for all health
professionals interested in managing pain in children and adolescents. The workshop will be held from
8.30 – 4.00pm on Thursday 12th at the Ernest and Marion Davis Library. See the attached flyer for further
information and consider forwarding this flyer to your multidisciplinary colleagues. Please note that you
will need to register through Bernie’s website but pay through conference registration.

If you wish to view either Starship or Kidz First Hospitals, please contact the respective Team Leaders
directly to organise a suitable time.

Conference dinner & drinks
This year’s conference will be held at the Fortuna Buffet Restaurant, Level 3, Sky City Auckland. If you
would like to have a cocktail beforehand, meet us at Bar 21 at 6pm.

                           Distraction, Pain and Guided Imagery
                     A Workshop for Nursing, Medical and Allied Health Professionals

                                 Facilitated by Dr Bernie Whitaker

       This multidisciplinary workshop is for all health professionals interested in managing pain
in children and adolescents. It is linked to the HPSAANZ Conference for attendees and anyone
interested in pain management.
       The workshop covers the neurophysiology of pain and fear. It includes principles of
Personal Construct Psychology (PCP) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in relation
to pain management, especially procedural pain and anxiety. Skills include: Focused Breathing,
Relaxation with Mindful Distraction and Guided Imagery. These interventions can be combined
with pharmacological approaches to managing pain in children and adolescents. The ACT
framework and emphasis on psychological flexibility in this workshop takes distraction and pain
management in a new direction.

A “Meet and greet” and opportunity for early registration will be held on Thursday in the Ernest
and Marion Davis Library from 4.30pm. Cocktail finger foods and non-alcoholic drinks will be
provided. The AGM will proceed after this so we would appreciate an indication if you will be
attending for catering purposes.
