PG & RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH LOCKDOWN ACTIVITIES (2020-2021) ACTIVITY POSTER The department conducted an online quiz on English Language and Literature on 14th and 16th and May 2020. 1070 participants took part in the quiz. Webinar on ‘Environment Justice Narratives’ on 29th May 2020. The resource person was Dr. U. Sumathy, Head and Associate Professor, Department of English, Government Arts College, Coimbatore. Webinar on ‘ Cultural Appropriation and Cultural Conflict’ on 13th June 2020. The resource person was Dr.Nila, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Mercy College, Palakkad, Kerala. Webinar on ‘Creating a Green Workforce for Environment’ on 11th July 2020.The resource person was Dr. AnandiSubramaniam,Principal Adviser, MoEF& CC(retd). Talk on Claiming Tradition in Literature on 8th June 2020.Speaker- Ms. Najiya Raishad, Teacher, Malappuram, Kerala.
Talk on Mapping Life with Ink on 16th June 2020. Speaker- Ms. Julia Jasmine, Budding Poet. Talk on Indigenous Literature and Current Times: Introducing Hansda Sowvendra Shekar on 23rd June 2020.Speaker- Ms. Monisha Raman, Content Writer, Chennai. Poetry Slam on 30th June 2020. Judge- Dr. KalpanaKarthi, Assistant Professor in English, LRG Government Arts College for Women, Tirupur. A session on Toni Morrison and the Black Experience- A Reading of Sula and the Bluest Eye on 7th July 2020. Speakers- Dr. Bhuvana, Head& Assistant Professor, Department of English, Providence College for Women, Coonoor. Sr. Sithara Joseph, Research Scholar, Department of English, Providence College for Women, Coonoor. A Review of Antoine de Saint -Exupery’s The Little Prince on 14th July 2020.Speaker- Dr. Anitha R, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Providence College for Women, Coonoor.
A glimpse of The Picture of Dorian Gray on 21st July 2020 by Mrs. AnithaSekhar, Director of April Star Ventures and Principal of Helen O Grady International EduAcdemy, Nilgiris was the speaker. Apart from these activities online classes for II, III UG & II PG started on 8th June 2020. On 11th and 12th of February, the creative club members exhibited their handcrafted articles and Culinary skills in the event “SPECRAFTICA 2020” A Webinar on “A Career in Content Writing” was greatly influential by Dr. Subramanian and Dr. Mohanagiri. They explained the art of blog-writing with many useful web-related links. On 8th August 2020 the department organised a webinar “ Gender Binaries and Screen Representations”. The resource person was Mrs. Krishna Sunder, Assistant Professor in English, KAHM Unity Women’s College, Kerala.
The department conducted an online short story competition on 1st August 2020. 23 students participated in the competition. On 5th August 2020 following the talk “Why I Love Stories and Writing” the results were announced by Ms. Sharmatha Shankar, A Blogger. Results: 1. Adarsh M 2. Daania Sait 3. Elakiya 4. Khadeeja 5. Samyukta. Consolation Prize: 6. Irene Babu 7. Helen Swarna An online pencil sketching competition was organised on 15/8/2020. 13 students participated in the competition. The results were announced by Ms. Apeksha Jain, an artist from Pune on 20/8/2020. Results: 1. Ashi Maria 2. Sana Ahmad 3. Preethi G Consolation Prize 4. Caroline Jacks 5. Priyanka G
On 29th August 2020 a session titled Popcorn Time- Munching Movies with Vignesh P was organised. Mr. Vignesh P. a writer from Bangalore was the guest speaker. On 1st September a session titled Evolving through Creativity was conducted. Four independent artists Ms. Sara Ahmed, Ms. Sarah Titus, Ms. Sakshi Sharma and Ms. Gauri Jham addressed the students on creativity and inspiration. The department released the Volume I of EPOCH Ezine on 5th September 2020. Rev. Sr. Secretary and Rev. Sr. Principal were the guest of honour. On 20th September 2020 the ezine was uploaded on the College website. ACTIVITIES OF THE READING CLUB ACTIVITY POSTER On 28th July 2020 Ms. Rebecca Hawkes, III BA English presented Markus Zusaks’ The Book Thief. On 4th August 2020 Elakiya II MA English presented Carlous Ruiz Zafon’s The Shadow of the Wind. On 11th August 2020 Ashi Maria of II MA English presented Fitzgerald’s Great Gatsby.
On 18th August 2020 Caroline Jacks and Irene Babu of III BA English presented two writers Khaled Hosseini and Haruki Murakami. The talk was titled Life and Lifelessness: Let’s find Hope. On 25th August 2020 Shyilla Juliet PhD Scholar of the department presented Chimmanda Ngozi Adichie Dr. Beulah Gideon Assistant Professor in English addressed the club on Art and Culture: Panorama through the Frame of Ethics in L. M. Montgomery’s Chronicles of Avonlea and Oscar Wilde’s The Canterville Ghost. On 14 th September 2020 Ms. Yovanna Clement, Assistant Professor of the Department presented Music Refashioning Life in Hardy’s Under the Greenwood Tree.
Mrs. Lakshmi Sadanand, former Professor of the department introduced Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird on 6th October 2020. On 14th October 2020 Ms. Adarsh of II MA English presented The Magical yet Manical Mayhem in Grimm’s Fairy Tales.
