Prayer for Ukraine Loving God, We pray for the people of Ukraine, for all those suffering or afraid, that you will be close to them and protect them. We pray for world leaders, for compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices. We pray for the world that in this moment of crisis, we may reach out in solidarity to our brothers and sisters in need. May we walk in your ways so that peace and justice become a reality for the people of Ukraine and for all the world. Amen 12
Dear Friends, Just a couple of weeks ago I read this honest and humble letter piece of journalism reflecting on Easter: “Easter Sunday. I went to church for the first time in ages. The little parish church has stood for 900 years in a village near where my parents live. It’s where my father James, who died last week aged 75, will be buried. It was a friendly, pomp-free service of the pragmatic sort – dogs were welcome, and there were tables with colouring-in pens to keep the kids occupied during the Eucharist. There was an easter-egg hunt in the graveyard afterwards.” But while this young man appreciated the rhythm, the ritual and the familiar Easter story, his Christianity was merely the cultural expression of someone born in England. He concluded: “It sucks to be a Christian who doesn’t believe. I don’t hold out for the resurrection of the body or the promise of life everlasting. I want my Dad to be still alive.” A few years ago, another British journalist was participating in a panel discussion where he was asked: ‘Which dangerous idea has the greatest potential to change the world for the better?’ His answer clearly startled his fellow panellists: “The most dangerous idea in human history and philosophy remains the belief that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and rose from the dead, and that is the most dangerous idea you will ever encounter.” “Why dangerous?” asked the host. “Because it alters the whole of human behaviour and all our responsibilities. It turns the universe from a meaningless chaos into a designed place in which there is justice and there is hope and, therefore, we all have a duty to discover the nature of that justice and work towards that hope. It alters us all. If we reject it, it alters us all as well. It is incredibly dangerous. It's why so many people turn against it.” Two journalists with different perspectives both recognised that central to the Christian faith is the claim that 2000 years ago a man stepped out of his grave. Christianity stands or falls on this. What do we make of this claim? What happened that first Easter? Was the body of Jesus stolen? Why then would robbers leave behind his grave clothes in the tomb? Did the disciples go to the wrong tomb which they found empty? Why then did the authorities not go to the correct tomb and show the corpse to discredit the early Christian claims of resurrection? Was it all a hoax perpetrated by the disciples? Why then did they go to the grave insisting Christ was alive? How come none cracked and confessed the fraud? The great season of Easter extends through the month of May, long after all the chocolate eggs have been eaten. Why not use the month to read about and ponder the Easter story? It is a most dangerous idea. It changes people. It alters us all. Revd Bryan Kerr Priest-in-charge of Levens, Heversham and Milnthorpe 13
