In this segment, you’ll get to hear from a member of the society every month! Happy New Year all!….because apparently that happened, though I couldn’t be sure. Everything seems to blur into one, it could still be 2020, or be 2025 at this rate and I wouldn’t know! Let’s see, a little about me: I’m a serial career changer, first degree was a BSc in Biochemistry, second an MSc in Mech Eng, now a PhD in P&O – you’ll probably see me in 5 years’ time doing a Dance degree or something random. My current project is looking at the mechanical and biological complications related to osseointegrated (bone-anchored) prosthetics and how these might be improved. I’m supposed to be doing some fun stuff in the lab but alas COVID has me stuck at a desk doing CAD and FEA, which I am neither good at nor do I enjoy quite as much…bring on the end of the end of the world (if that makes any sense). Attempts to keep my sanity during this apocalypse have included: boardgames, reading, acroyoga, learning languages, LOTS of baking – I attempted running once and then came to my senses (clearly, I had almost lost my sanity at that point!). Current project/activity is renovating and revamping the new flat I bought just before Christmas – party required as soon as allowed. Definitely looking forward to having the group cohort and social side of the CDT back again! Weird to think that by the time this happens we will probably have a new cohort to add to the mix! Anyway, stay safe, stay sane-ish and feel free to get in touch and chat. We are all trying to get through this Armageddon called “doing a PhD” (oh and COVID of course).
Here are some things we wish we knew or got told before (*sigh*). Struggling with planning out the things? Check out Miro. It’s an online collaborative whiteboard platform that’s very useful for flexi planning! As a PhD student, you will constantly be introduced to new ideas. Make sure you understand stuff even if it means asking people a lot of questions! It's better to ask too many questions than not enough! Sick of reading through and summarising papers one by one? Want an easier way to compare and contrast between the papers you’ve read? Then check out raxter.io! It's a great website for literature reviews and comparing papers. Doing a PhD can be hard and it’s 1000% OKAY to not be okay. Just know that there are plenty of us in the same boat, you’re never alone!
Coming from a variety of backgrounds, our members are a talented and entertaining bunch. This segment shines a light on some hidden talents within the society! This month we’ll take a look at Balint’s hobby! One of Balint’s hobbies is tabletop roleplaying and the associated world-building writing for creating the setting of the game. The pictures below are just some of the handouts he personally designed for players. During the game, players use these handout as a reference or as clues to solve mysteries. The handouts include maps Balint made for the cities they visit and newspaper articles he wrote to provide players with leads. The players are able to design their own characters. Due to the pandemic, Balint and his friends weren’t able to play in person so they used Zoom to chat and Google Slides as a "simulated" table. Check out the pictures below and if you’re interested, let Balint know! He’s willing to host an exclusive event for a group of 2 – 5 people from the CDT lot! Newspaper articles written by Balint! Here are some city maps Balint created! Simulated table on Google slides showing stats for each player!
