                                           Art-A-Saurus
This month’s Insider looks at paleoartists, the people who illustrate dinosaurs
and other prehistoric animals for books, movies, and even museums.
Have students read the article, paying particular attention to the “Meet a
paleoartist” interview. Short interviews are a good way to showcase clear,
succinct writing. Ask students to examine the interview questions and think
 about why they were chosen.

Ask students the following discussion questions:
 • How does the short interview capture what Danielle does for a living?
 • How do the pictures selected illustrate Danielle’s interests and level of
   expertise?
 • If this were a longer interview, what else would you want to ask?
 • How does the interview add to your understanding of the larger
   “Art-A-Saurus” article?

Insider
                                         Art-A-Saurus

• In your opinion, how does paleoart combine art and science?

Follow-Up Activities
• Pair students up and ask them to conduct short interviews with each
other. Ask them to think about what three questions they would ask and
why. Then have students present the information to look like a magazine
page like the one in OWL. They can add things like photos and drawings
  for visual appeal.
• Have students try their hand at paleoart. Each student should choose a
prehistoric creature and research what scientists think it looked like and
why. Then try drawing the creature or illustrating it digitally.

Incredible
                                          Snakes Take Flight

Read the Incredible! article as a class and discuss how flying snakes are able to
soar. Then talk about the differences between flying and gliding.

Discussion Questions:
• What are some other things that can fly (birds, planes, hot air balloons)?
• What other things can glide (gliders, paper airplanes, flying squirrels)?
• What do flyers and gliders have in common? How are they different?
• What do bird wings and plane wings have in common?
• Describe how flying snakes and other gliding animals soar through the air.

Follow-Up Activities:
• Learn the lingo: Divide students into groups and have them research defini-
tions for flight terms such as lift, gravity, thrust, drag, airfoil, aerodynamics.
• Then watch a video like this one: [https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=O8qCA2mZvVI ] to learn about Bernoulli’s Principle and how it
  affects things that fly.
• Test Bernoulli’s Principle: Cut a piece of paper into a strip about 2 cm wide
and 25 cm long. Hold the short side of the paper against your bottom lip.
Blow across the paper’s surface. What happens? Why?
• Make paper airplanes and have a flying contest: Try different designs—find
them online or come up with your own. Which ones stay in the air longest?
  Which fly the farthest? Why?

Snapshot

This month’s infographic looks at the 2018 Paralympic Games in PyeongChang,
South Korea. An infographic uses photos, icons, graphs and other elements to
present information in a visual way. Have students read through the spread.
Then ask them to choose a subject and create their own infographic, which
should include:

• Five or six fun or amazing facts and stats
• Visual elements, such as photos, drawings, icons, etc.
• Short descriptions or labels for each item
• A title and an introduction to the subject

Other info you might include:
• World records
• Important quotes
• Small maps
• Book covers or movie stills
• Arrows and doodles
Be creative!

Tip: Look through back issues of OWL magazine or online for more
infographic samples.
