CABINET OF THE MONTH March 2020 WOLF HUBER (Feldkirch 1490? – 1553 Passau) The Large Crucifixion. C. 1516. With the artist's initials on the bottom left: "W H". Woodcut. 12,2:9,4 cm. Bartsch VII, 485, no. 5. Hollst. XVA, 5. Geisberg-Strauss, no. 879. Dodgson II, 258, 8. Winzinger 267. Coll.: Josef Storck, Mailand, 1766–1836 (L. 2319), with the inventory no. "8268" and the year of acquisition: 1798: on verso the stamp "vg" (L. 25113/a, for which Lugt suggests a collection from the 18th century, but gives no name); Otto Schäfer sold at Kornfeld June 1992 to the present owner. All 13 known woodcuts of Wolf Huber were executed in the very short period between 1510 and 1520 and are all extremely rare. Wolf Huber is considered the most important artist of the Danube School beside Albrecht Altdorfer. One of his outstanding characteristics is the handling of the landscape, a quality which is very nicely shown in the present print. Brilliant and very clear early impression of this print with almost fully visible borderline. From an old collection volume, window-mounted. (37003). CHF 35'000.-

Prov.:Bookplate ER of previous collector in front cover. FIRST EDITION of this important and influential book. La Clerc was a French artist from the Duchy of Lorraine. He specialized in subtle reproductive drawings, etchings, and engravings of paintings; and worked mostly in Paris, where he was counseled by the King's painter, Charles Le Brun, to devote himself entirely to engraving. Leclerc joined the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1672 and taught perspective there. He worked for Louis XIV, being made "graveur du Roi" (attached to the Cabinet du Roi), doing engraving work for the royal house. Leclerc also engaged in periodic work as a technical draftsman and military engineer. CHF 1700.–
