OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE Attending Mass in the COVID-19 Era As we continue to monitor guidelines on masking in light of the Delta variant, we make note of the CDC recommendations which are copied from www.cdc.gov: • If you are not fully vaccinated and aged 2 or older, you should wear a mask in indoor public places. • People who have a condition or are taking medications that weaken their immune system may not be fully protected even if they are fully vaccinated. They should continue to take all precautions recommended for unvaccinated people, including wearing a well-fitted mask, until advised otherwise by their healthcare provider. • If you are fully vaccinated, to maximize protection from the Delta variant and prevent possibly spreading it to others, wear a mask indoors in public if you are in an area of substantial or high transmission. NOVEMBER 21, 2021 The GOAT is a Lamb A few weeks ago, someone approached me after Mass and suggested I give a homily about a goat. At first, I was baffled, but quickly realized the person wasn’t speaking of an animal, but was referring to the recent acronym for “Greatest Of All Time.” In this sense, a GOAT is someone who is a legend in their field, especially in sports. If we think of various GOATs from the world of athletics, we might think of the Babe Ruth and Baseball, Michael Jordan and Basketball, Serena Williams and Tennis, or Peyton Manning and Football. Certainly there are other greats from the world of music, and literature, and movies, and science, and practically every discipline we can imagine. But when it comes to the ultimate GOAT, the “goat” is actually a Lamb! Today we conclude the Church Year with the celebration of Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe. Jesus came into our world to accomplish what no one else ever could or ever will again: Jesus won our salvation. He holds a status with which no one can compete, and no one will ever exceed. No one will ever be greater than Jesus. He showed His great power, not by flexing His muscles, but through what appeared to the world to be weakness. While Caesar was attempting to show his power to the world as emperor of Rome, Jesus came to save the world as a tiny, newborn infant. He began to usher in God’s Kingdom, not with the sword, but by proclaiming the Gospel. Later, He allowed Himself to be arrested, and nailed to a cross, and left to die. But from what seemed a terrible defeat, Jesus arose victorious over sin and death, and gave eternal life to all who believe in Him. Who else but Jesus could accomplish such a feat? Jesus is called the “Lamb of God,” a reference to the lambs which were offered to God in sacrifice in the Old Testament, in particular, the “Paschal Lamb” which marks the Passover, and God’s deliverance of His people Israel from slavery in Egypt. But none of those sacrificial lambs could wash away sin forever, and they certainly could not rise from the dead! But in the book of Revelation, we find a scene in Heaven, where the Angels and Saints and every creature on earth sing a song of praise, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor and glory and blessing; to the one who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor, glory and might, forever and ever.” So, the GOAT is the Lamb! Our second reading says that when Jesus comes again, every eye will see Him. Most GOATs like to be seen and celebrated for their greatness. While Jesus says of Himself, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the one who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty,” He does not keep His glory to Himself. Jesus was already the King of the Universe from all eternity. So why then did He come into the world, suffer, die, and rise again? He did it to claim the Kingdom for us! Now, Jesus calls us to share in His glory forever! He invites us, not just to live in Heaven, but to share the throne with Him. And, His Kingdom does not pass away, and His record as the Greatest of All Time will stand forever and ever. Unlike the Kingdom of Pilate and Caesar, Jesus’ Kingdom is not of this world, which is passing away. His Kingdom, which is now our Kingdom, never ends. When our second reading tells us, “Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead and ruler of the kings of the earth,” it means we can believe His testimony, for His own rising from the dead is the assurance that we, who are one with Him in baptism, also possess eternal life. Our destiny is to be where Jesus is. The University of Notre Dame has produced many “greats” throughout the years. From the Notre Dame football endzone a famous mural is visible. It portrays Jesus with arms lifted in blessing, and has affectionately become known as “Touchdown Jesus,” as it appears Jesus is saying, like a referee, “It’s good!” For our sake, Jesus has scored the winning run; He has carried us safely into the end zone of Heaven. At the final judgment, if we have lived in God’s grace, Jesus will declare of our lives, “It’s good!” But His raised arms are more than a declaration of the winning point scored. His open arms are the uprights, and the invitation to pass through His arms, safely into them, to be embraced by Him forever. Jesus has won the victory for us, and we may have confidence in our salvation through Him, for the GOAT is a Lamb! Fr. Roberts ST. BARNABAS CATHOLIC CHURCH 3

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE Outreach Ministry - St. Bonaventure Due to COVID, our mission team was unable to travel to St. Bonaventure Indian Mission in Arizona this year. Instead, we sent funds from our parish family through the Outreach Ministry, that we had budgeted for supplies for the trip. Chris Halter, the Executive Director, sent the following letter. Thank you for your generous gift to St. Bonaventure. I am so grateful for your care for the children, elders and families served by the Mission and School. God Bless your generosity toward those whose lives are far less fortunate than yours or mine. All the work done here at the mission runs on faith in God and the goodness and kindness of friends like you. Maybe your heart is with the elderly and lonely. Maybe your heart is with the little ones in school. Maybe you realize the huge importance of water in the lives of those who don’t have any. Whatever your reasons for caring about our Navaho brothers and sister, I thank you for your prayers and gifts. Where ever your heart lies, I know that 200+ children in school and their parents are glad you care. I know the elders are grateful for water. I know that families are thankful for the aid with clothing, blankets and repairing their homes. Your generosity is the key to all the programs at St. Bonaventure Mission and School. Your caring gladdens my heart and those of all you help. To see more about the amazing work done at St. Bonaventure, check out their website at https://www.stbonaventuremission.org/ The Outreach Ministry team meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. New members are always welcome. Contact Connie Merkel at connie_merkel@yahoo.com for more information. 6 ST. BARNABAS CATHOLIC CHURCH
NOVEMBER 21, 2021 Everyday Stewardship - Recognize God In Your Ordinary Moments Long Live the King Did you know that you can become royalty, for the right price? It’s true — for the low, low cost of $50, you, too, can purchase a 12-square-inch souvenir plot of Scottish land and call yourself “Laird So-and-so.” Now, this lordship or ladyship doesn’t come with the ability to boss anyone around, but maybe your friends will be impressed enough to bend the knee. My point is, we’ve all got our own little fiefdoms — folks or communities for which we have a feeling of responsibility. Maybe we’re not their “king,” but most of us have those we think of as “our people.” Now, in this world, people lay themselves down for their kings. History is riddled with the bodies of men, young and old — and plenty of women and children, too — who were casualties of wars waged by men in power, men who never had to shed their own blood. But in the next world, the King dies for his people. This is leadership par excellence — the leadership of someone whose love is greater than his ambition. We are all leaders of a sort. On the parish level, you have the obvious roles — serving on pastoral council, spearheading the capital campaign, leading the Altar Guild. But you also have the quiet ones who lead from the wings — the janitor who can always be relied upon to do his job, or the volunteer librarian who puts in extra hours on the weekends. There is a saying — find your people. I say, find your people, and find a way to lay yourself down for them, in imitation of the greatest King that ever was. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi ST. OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE St. Francesco Antonio Fasani (1681 – 1742) lived his whole life as a loving, devout, and atoning man. He entered the Conventual Franciscans in 1695, and 10 years later taught philosophy to younger friars, served as guardian of his friary, and eventually became provincial minister. When his term of office ended, St. Francesco became master of novices and finally pastor in his hometown of Lucera. Known throughout his various ministries as being loving, devout, and penitential, he was also a well-known confessor and preacher. St. Francesco was a loyal friend of the poor and worked tirelessly to find ways to support them. He was a mystic with such a profound prayer life and supernatural gifts that he was known to levitate during prayer. He was canonized in 1986 by Pope John Paul II. ©LPi Dr. Sarah Condra, dds 317-888-7295 280 S.
