From the Principal Tēnā koutou, Talofa lava, Mālō e lelei, Dia duit. Dear Parents, Guardians & Whānau, Our Catholic Character Theme for the year is ‘A Heart for the World’. As an RNDM sister school, like Euphrasie Barbier we are called to have a passion for God and a passion for humanity. We are challenged to be border-crossers and boundary dwellers, transcending barriers of age, culture, geography and belief. We encourage our girls to be charitable with their time and provide loving service to this beautiful school and to others through different community groups. Thank you to Mrs Briggs for working on this over the summer and to Mrs Jamieson for designing the logo which you will see in this newsletter. Term 1 has started very positively and we have had several occasions that I thoroughly enjoyed; including the Pōwhiri, Year 9 Barbeque and our Leaders Mass. We start the year with a very healthy roll and the biggest intake of Year 9’s for a number of years. It has been wonderful to see so many of you at these events and I hope this continues throughout the year. We have also welcomed a number of new staff to the school this term and you can read more about them later in this newsletter. Our NCEA results from last year are to be celebrated, with history being made by our Year 11 and 12 groups. NCEA statistics across all three levels continue to be above both National Girls’ Achievement and schools similar to ours. For those who completed their year at SHC, 100% achieved Level 1, 94% Level 2 and over 90% achieved Level 3. 100% of our Maori girls achieved Level 1 and 2 with only one student missing out on Level 3. 100% of our Pasifika girls achieved Level 1 with 90% achieving Level 2 and 3. These are the best result in the history of the college. We continue to gain Scholarships in Geography and History. We are all very proud of these achievements. Thank you to the outstanding teachers who are so dedicated and nurturing of our students. Summer sport codes are already in full swing at the school and it is opportune to reflect on why we see sport as playing such an important part in the development of our young people. The American Journal of Preventative Medicine (2003) stated that frequent participation in sports in after-school hours is associated with high levels of physical activity in adulthood for both males and females. This study concluded that adolescent participation in ball games, endurance sports and athletics is associated with a very high level of adult activity in later life. From my perspective, sport encourages a lifelong benefit of improved health and wellbeing as well as encouraging our young women to take a break from the devices that many are spending too much time on. More than that, it promotes social inclusion and teaches vital lifelong qualities of character, resilience, teamwork and the lessons that come from winning and losing. Tennis legend Billie-Jean King summed it up particularly eloquently with the words: “Sport teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose. Put simply, it teaches you about life.” While we don’t make sport a compulsory activity for our girls, as is the case in some schools, the all-round benefits for young people mean that I strongly encourage all girls to be doing something in this space and represent the school in something. There are lots of different levels from social to championship type participation and I would hope that most students are involved in something, especially during the winter terms. As we are a small community, I make a plea to any parents, grandparents or guardians, who may be able to help with coaching or managing any of our sports teams, to contact our Sports Coordinator Kate Lunny by email on sports@sacredheartnapier.school.nz. Finally, I wish Mrs Howlett all the best as she embarks on study leave. While she is on leave Mrs Jamieson will be taking over as HOD of the Arts and Ms Angela Dudman will be taking on the Art and Painting classes. God Bless Maria Neville-Foster Principal

Hearts for the World As a catholic school we are first and foremost a disciple of Jesus. Jesus is the word of God who dwelt among us, teaching us how to respond to the spirit and grow closer to God. It is Jesus who had a Heart for the world. We know how to follow Jesus by seeking inspiration from the life of our foundress, Euphrasie. We look to how she found inspiration in the very first disciple of Jesus, Mary. In the scriptures we see Mary as a woman of extraordinary courage and strength, a woman who is ablaze with love for her God and vibrant with compassion for humanity. She is a woman with a heart for the world. We are called to be attentive to the movement of the Spirit within ourselves and within the persons among who we live and learn. This year our theme is prompting you to... • Recognise the call of Jesus to be partners in the mission of the Church. • Devote time to meditation that allows space for God. • Respond to the call of the Holy Spirit to be women of justice. • Be present in our Parish community as women of faith. • Articulate your house identity. • Be actively engaged with the sisterhood of Sacred Heart. • Articulate the virtues of Euphrasie Barbier and nurture them in your lives. • Deepen your understanding of the mission of the RNDM sisters . We encourage you to be charitable with your time and provide loving service to this beautiful school and to others through different community groups. Board of Trustees Kia ora koutou I would like to take the opportunity, on behalf of the Sacred Heart College Board of Trustees, to welcome you all back, and for our Year 9 families and new staff, into our school. The weather has certainly let us know we are in summer and I’m sure the girls have felt it being back in school uniforms. No doubt the newly installed air conditioning units have been well utilised and appreciated by all. Our academic results are back for the 2019 school year and to say we are proud and thrilled would be an understatement. Congratulations to all our fantastic staff, our Senior Leadership Team, capably lead by Maria Neville-Foster, our girls and their supportive families. Without us all working together, these results cannot be achieved. The planning has been completed for this year and our first Board Meeting for 2020 will be held next week. As this is a public meeting , we sincerely invite anyone to pop in and join us for a cuppa and to see how the school is lead at Board level. Until next time, stay safe, love each other and remember to laugh lots. God bless Kirstin Thompson Board Chairperson

Academic The 2020 academic year is underway and the girls have all had several classes in each of their subjects. Please support your daughter to ensure that she is both well-equipped when coming to school each day but also support her to settle into good routines at home to create a positive school/ life balance. Each of the Level 1, 2 and 3 National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) subjects will have been issued a course outline and assessment plan for the year. This will support each student to plan their workload and study programme to maximise their achievement. Please ensure that these assessment dates are entered into their calendar or diary. As many of our subjects have a large component of internal assessment it is important that every student starts the year as well as possible as these grades make up their credits for Level 1, 2 or 3 NCEA and endorsement for Merit or Excellence. The learning and skills at the beginning of the year also play an important part in preparing and scaffolding for learning and assessment later on in the year. This week each student has been issued a New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) booklet. Please read this with your daughter so that you are both aware of the expectations of NZQA regarding the requirements of NCEA. In particular if your daughter is away or you know in advance your daughter will not be there for an assessment can you she/you please let the teacher know prior to the assessment. For those students, parents and whanau new to NCEA or those that want to know more please follow the link to more information https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/. The NCEA external examination timetable is out already for this year. Uniform We have moved to a year round uniform for the first time. In particular this means the students can choose to wear a long or short sleeve shirt as suits the weather. Shoes can be worn with either knee length black socks or ankle length short socks. The ankle length socks are not sports socks that are cut down to the shoe opening. We have also made a slight change to the earring rule this year in that students are allowed to wear one earing in each ear around the outside of the ear. These earrings must be either a small plain stud or a small sleeper. Plastic covers are considered earrings and therefore not to be worn unless they are deemed the one earring. No piercings are to be seen on other parts of the body, including the tongue. No visible tattoos are allowed. A cross (or expression of faith) or taonga (pounamu) may be worn around the neck. In keeping with tradition, the wearing of a cross or taonga is worn next to the skin – representing the closeness felt with the giver of the taonga. We ask that students please respect this aspect of the tradition. Year 13 students only are allowed to wear a small necklace of choice. If a student presents with non-uniform items they will be confiscated. Students can pick these items up from the office at the end of each term. If you would like the items at home, you are most welcome to come in and pick them up yourselves. Can you please check your daughter’s uniform and overall presentation as they prepare for school. It is not a pleasant conversation for teachers to be having with students who are blatantly defying the school rules. We ask for your support in maintaining our high standards of dress. Marysia Airey Deputy Principal (Pastoral Care) Duke of Edinburgh We are excited to announce that SHC is in it's second year of offering Duke of Edinburgh Award and we will now be facilitating both Bronze (14 and over) and Silver (15 and over) awards. Past Pupil Profile—Dr Roshan Perera Dr Roshan Perera was a student at Sacred Heart College, Napier from 1977 – 1981. She is great supporter of our school with an award named in her honour at Major Prizegiving for Excellence in Level 3 Science and Mathematics and sponsors her family named scholarship for incoming Year 9 students. Roshan completed her medical degree (MBChB) at the University of Otago, in 1987, and then worked as a junior doctor and later as a general practitioner in Hawke’s Bay up to the late 90’s. After completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health in 1997, she was drawn to academia and research, and went onto complete a Master of Public Health in 2002 and then her PhD in 2009. She was a Research Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington from 2002 – 2006 working on various projects including the evaluation of the first year of PHOs, and the evaluation of the Primary Health Care Strategy. She went on to become Manager of Guidelines and Research at the New Zealand Guidelines Group, followed by a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Primary Health Care and General Practice, at the University of Otago, Wellington. From 2009 onwards she has held a Senior Lecturer position at the University of Otago, and continued her academic career pathway, becoming a Module Convenor, Clinical Skills Advisor and lately, Programme Convenor of the Clinical Skills Programme at the Otago Medical School in Dunedin. Roshan continues to publish her research findings in national and international journals, and in 2006 received the University of Otago, Wellington, PhD research prize. Roshan loves science fiction, and enjoys playing classical and rhythm guitar, violin and saxophone, and was involved in the music groups at St Patrick’s Church Napier, and St Patrick’s Church Kilbirnie, Wellington. Roshan and her family came to Napier from Sri Lanka when she was eight years old. Her father Dr Ramsay Perera was a specialist in Public Health Medicine, and was the Medical Officer of Health for Hawkes Bay and Gisborne for approximately 20 years. Roshan’s regret is that her father died in 2008, after she had submitted her PhD but before the results were known. Her mother Mrs Sita Perera, who died in 2016, was always a rock of calm advice and support. Far left: Roshan Perera (bottom row-left) and the Prefects of 1981. Right: Alexandria Scurr, the 2019 Roshan Perera Award for Excellence in Level 3 Science and Mathematics recipient, which has a prize of $500 kindly sponsored by Roshan herself. * If you or someone you know is an Old Girl of SHC and are willing to have a profile published in our newsletter, please email pr.sec@sacredheartnapier.school.nz
