NISSAN PATROL 4WD CLUB OF NSW & ACT INC. About the Club The Nissan Patrol 4WD Club was established in 1976 by a group of four-wheel drive enthusiasts from other clubs interested in pursuing common interests and activities in 4WD'ing, and also aiming to give the Nissan Patrol its own identity. Although named for the Nissan Patrol, the Club welcomes all types of four-wheel drives capable of completing our driver training course. In 2002, the Club fulfilled a long-held dream and purchased its own property of 94 hectares in the Windellama region near Goulburn. The land is used for Club activities such as bush camping, driver training and social activities. There is also a dam on the property which provides a reliable source of water for bush fire-fighting. In May 2006, our initial idea of a large shelter/shed came into fruition and was finally completed. The shed acts as our bush classroom which allows us to easily host our Driver Training Courses. It is also the place where we have our Easter, Xmas In July and Club Anniversary weekends, and is available for free camping by members at any time. Front View Back View The club atmosphere is, and always has been, to have fun and develop long lasting friendships from a wide variety of people from all over Sydney, Canberra and surrounding areas. The club holds regular driver training days for all members, trips from one day to several weeks' duration (such as outback trips) and a variety of social activities. Club trips are graded depending on the degree of difficulty to cater for all levels of four-wheel driving. On trips, the traditional “happy hour” and campfire provide a wonderful setting for story-telling, having a quiet drink and building solid friendships. We are strongly committed to “Access for All” (except ratbags) in our National Parks and State Forests, protecting the environment through responsible four-wheel driving and helping to 'Clean-Up Australia' by cleaning up our bushland. Since 1980, the Club has been hosting varying types of events for the general public to enjoy in their 4WD’s. In past years there were the annual Nissan Trials, which saw inter-club challenges testing the driving skills of both individuals and teams. In recent years, the Club also ran the “Son of Trials” at River Island near Mittagong. These events offered standard road registered vehicle owners, from learner drivers through to experienced 4WD’ers, to participate in a number of challenging courses to test their skills and have the chance to win some fantastic prizes. A Note from The Editors Dear Members, Friends and Visitors, First it was the bushfires that had many packing a few meagre belongings, fleeing their homes for safety and praying for rain. When the rains finally arrived, the deluge brought flash flooding to areas that saw a month’s worth of rainfall over a couple of days. But not long after the fire and rain, Mother Nature does her thing and new life soon began to grow. 7 December 2019 15 February 2020 10 March 2020 Now, we are told to stay in our homes, cancel or postpone outings, and watch the world shut down because of this COVID-19. But, as THEY say, when life gives you lemons – make lemonade (don’t slice them up for your Corona’s). So instead of more doom and gloom, throughout this mag, there are a few items I’m calling “Lockdown Laughs” to start spreading some laughter instead of a virus. I tried to fit in as many as I could to put a little fun in our isolation. Some of you may have seen these, as they have been shared many times on Facebook. Again, as THEY say, laughter is the best medicine (and a dose of some anti-biotics on the side wouldn’t hurt either). Make the best out of the worst situation. While in isolation, you can: • catch up with those odd jobs around the house and garden • sort out your wardrobes, storage areas, garages & sheds • give your car and/or truck a really good clean up • watch a series on Netflix or read a book • have a family game or movie nights • crafters like me, can finally get to those UFO’s (that’s Un Finished Objects) or start new ones. (2 on the hook & planning the next) • Most important of all: Get out your maps and PLAN YOUR NEXT TRIP So, STAY HOME, STAY SAFE and PLEASE take all the necessary precautions if you really do need to go out. Keep On Patrolling! Tania & Fiona & Ruby (Fiona has returned as Assistant Editor) Next magazine due on the website 6 July 2020. All articles for the next magazine MUST be sent in a Microsoft Word format and forwarded to editor@nissanpatrolclub.org by 30 June 2020. 5
The Report from Madam President Dear Members, What a wild ride it has been, the last little while! The year started with bushfires threatening large parts of the eastern seaboard. Thankfully the Club’s Land and shed were not affected. In the background, a new Corona Virus was spreading through China, but we didn’t think much of it over here … until it hit our shores and turned our lives upside down. Just about all of us have been affected financially, socially, physically and possibly mentally. The Club has also been affected. General meetings at the Veteran Car Club are suspended until gatherings are permitted. The closure of the National Parks and State Forests as well as various State borders has curtailed trips. Driver training, working bees, Easter at the Land and the Bush Mechanics Course are all on hold for the foreseeable future. It is for that reason that the Club property is also closed until further notice. Many of us had the same idea, to go there to isolate. Great in theory, but you would be there isolating with many other like-minded members. So, with all this upheaval, the committee (via video conferencing) held its regular meeting to discuss the club’s operation as well as ways of staying in touch with you. Technology seems to be the solution. Our new web master Robert Kinsey, is looking at ways to set up Zoom so we can connect electronically on our regular meeting nights. If you don’t have a computer or a web cam, dialling in via telephone also works. Please keep an eye out in your email for more information regarding the set up. The AGM held in March saw only one significant change in the line-up. After many years of service to the club as web master, Brett McCurley handed over his responsibilities to a new member, Robert Kinsey. This change came about as Brett changed jobs and started a family. This meant that time in front of a computer became shorter. The committee and I would like to thank Brett for his dedication and help. He has been instrumental behind the scenes keeping the web site and Facebook up to date. Robert joins the committee and brings many years of experience in the IT industry. What am I, chopped liver? So, now I will look back at the year that was: This past year has been a busy and interesting time for our members and the committee. The new Constitution and By-Laws were passed and registered with the Department of Fair Trading. This was a process that began in 2018 and was completed and passed in time for the 2019 AGM. Mark Crowley led the time-consuming project and I am happy to say that this exercise will not need to be repeated for several more years. The land working bees moved from monthly to quarterly events, this means that the level of member participation has increased, resulting in an increase in productivity and socialising. The fires that ravaged the state from July to January, presented a threat to the land. However, the winds looked favourably upon us and the Land came through the season unscathed. Having said that, a visit from the Windellama RFS captain highlighted some issues that will have to be addressed. Most importantly, moving wood storage away from the shed, clearing a perimeter 6
around it and installing a roof sprinkler system on the shed, toilet and generator container is in the planning and building stage. Changes to insurance brokers and the National 4WD Association saw upheavals in the club’s insurance arrangements resulting in large increases in premiums. Several alternatives were examined and discussed by the committee and at a special meeting it was decided to rejoin the NSW 4WD Association. It was a decision that was not taken lightly, however the benefits that have flowed from this is that the club has not had to pay for stands at the Eastern Creek and Queanbeyan shows, there are also insurance discounts for club members through Club 4X4. Several other clubs also returned to the Association for similar reasons. I have attended monthly and quarterly meetings of the NSW 4WD Association and I am happy to report that the Association has moved from what was once a combative and at times hostile stance to a collaborative and welcoming group. The Association’s relationship with the State Government and NPWS has improved and the Association now has members sitting on a number of advisory committees. The advisory panel studying the bushfires and the NSW NPWS committee both have an association delegate on board. There are now semi regular meetings of the ACT membership, I am aiming to have this become a regular meeting on the club calendar. I attended several of those meetings last year, and I hope that my successor will continue to do the same. I hope that there will eventually be an ACT representative sitting on the committee soon. Unfortunately, overall membership has dropped over the year. It seems to be a combination of senior members choosing not to renew as lifestyles change, plus a lack of short trips. Financially, the club has maintained its finances at a steady state. New stock accounting procedures will more accurately reflect the club’s surplus or deficit. However, the lower membership renewals reflect lower annual receipts. While the club’s infrastructure is in place, expenditure going forward should be given careful consideration. The club no longer has a major fundraiser to top up its coffers. Driver Training places great demands on the trainers’ time. Sadly, several assistant driver trainers have withdrawn due to work commitments, leaving the team short on manpower. This is an issue that will be examined over the following months. There are regular long trips on the calendar, however, we are always looking for shorter weekend or day trips. Trips (not necessarily 4WD Trips) to towns affected by the bushfires would be a great way to support those towns as they struggle to recover. Blaze Aid is another charity that is always looking for people to help affected communities, and I encourage you to consider volunteering some of your time. The Association is also organising trips to help out Blaze Aid, the club has been invited to participate in those events. A strategy day was held in November, led by Anne Symonds. Encouragingly, several members attended the day. New talents were discovered as well as new perspectives on issues that the committee had been discussing. Anne also worked on a business plan, which I believe is on the web site for all members to read and make comments. Over the last 12 months, your committee has demonstrated a dedication to the smooth running of the club. There have been two extraordinary meetings that were convened to work through problems in a constructive way. I thank all of you for your dedication and time through these endeavours. Cheers, Rollanda Rosenstrauss 7

DRIVER TRAINING with Chris Driver Training Co-ordinator The Nissan Patrol 4WD Club provides free driver training to its members, which is included in your membership fee. The Driver Training Course covers a comprehensive range of topics. Some of these topics teach you practical driving over a variety of terrain and obstacles. Our courses are Basic Driver Training, Basic Recovery Techniques, Advanced Driver Training, Advanced Recovery, and many more. Before you are permitted on a Club Trip, it is a condition of Club Membership that you complete the Club Basic Driver Training Course, regardless of your prior 4WD'ing experience. The Basic Driver Training Course is conducted on our own land near Goulburn, where a range of purposely built tracks give the course participants a variety of track surfaces. Our Land also has facilities to conduct other educational functions, such as GPS Operation and First Aid. Our Club shop is regularly at Driver Training selling top quality recovery gear, 4WD essentials and Club merchandise at very reasonable prices. Anyone who wishes to do the Recovery Refresher Course is most welcome to join any Basic Driver Training Sunday at the Club Land. Our driver trainers are looking forward to all our club members attending and revising the safety and recovery techniques that make our 4WDriving a safer and more enjoyable activity for all. See the Club Calendar for the next Driver Training weekend. WORKING BEES With Richard Scott Land Manager Assistant Manager Working bees sound like they would be a lot of hard work. BUT, our club working bees usually have very little work and then you are free to do whatever you want. Regular working bees are held to help with land maintenance. At the Land, there is the opportunity to help establish new driver training tracks, assist with the shed, tank and toilet/shower facilities, collect and cut up firewood, then have a chat around the fireplace and an excellent Saturday night dinner at “The Loaded Dog” in Tarago. Please consider helping out at the land, and contact the Land Managers to enable them to organise work activities and catering. See the club Calendar for the next Working Bee weekend. LOCKDOWN LAUGHS Why is everyone buying up all the toilet paper? Because when one person coughs, another 10 people shit themselves. 12

TRIP LEADERS and NEW TRIPS 4WD trips are the heart of our Club and we need more trips and more Trip Leaders. Trips can be for a day, weekend or even longer. If you've found a special place with great tracks, views, natural features, walks or a terrific camping spot then why not share it with like-minded friends from the Nissan Patrol 4WD Club who enjoy getting out into the bush as much as you do. Alternatively, you could organise a non-4WD event such as a winery tour, river cruise, scenic walks around Sydney or to places of historic interest. If you would like to lead a trip, please contact the Trip Organiser Cheers, Mark Trip Co-ordinator Nissan Patrol 4WD Club of NSW & ACT Inc. BOOKING ON A CLUB TRIP • You are required to book in on any Club trip you wish to attend by contacting the Trip Leader. • Introduce yourself and discuss with them your vehicle capabilities and level of driving skills. • Leave a contact number. • You must reconfirm your participation in the trip a few days before departure. • If you must cancel, contact the trip leader at the earliest possible time, so reserves can take your place and no-one is waiting for you where mobile phones don’t work. TRIP CLASSIFICATION This class of trip is considered to be extremely difficult. Participants will A have to be experienced at travelling over difficult terrain. Winching and/or towing will almost definitely be required. Participants will be required to bring along a certain amount of recovery equipment. The trip leader will have the right to reject a request from someone who is considered under-experienced. B This type of trip is considered a moderate to difficult trip. Some winching and/or towing will almost certainly be required. Under extreme weather conditions this trip could develop into a Class “A” trip. This classification is considered a moderate trip. Various sections of this C trip will require cautious driving in order to negotiate it, but in most circumstances, winching should not be necessary. Under extreme weather conditions this trip could develop into a Class “B” trip. D This trip is considered a relatively easy trip. It is unlikely that any winching and/or towing will be required. E This trip is considered very easy with little or no four-wheel driving involved. This type of trip will usually consist of either an easy-to-get-to base camp or a series of scenic tours. W Definitely, the most hideous of all trip classification, where you actually need to get out of your vehicle and walk to the desired destination. CONVOY PROCEDURE For the benefit of new members and as a reminder to old members, convoy procedure on any NISSAN CLUB outing is as follows: • The trip leader will ensure that the group on the outing is self-sufficient and should only call on outside bodies for assistance with recovery as a last resort. • No driver will drive in a manner - or at a speed - that could endanger himself or any other person or vehicle. • In hazardous areas it is the responsibility of the following driver to ensure that the previous vehicle has passed through the hazard before proceeding. • It is the responsibility of all drivers to maintain (visual) contact with the following vehicle, especially at intersections. • Persons leaving the convoy must notify the Trip Leader and, if possible, give details of their intentions. • On trips including two or more vehicles, each vehicle will remain in a designated position in the convoy and not overtake the vehicle in front unless the driver of that vehicle slows down and signals the overtaking vehicle to pass. • It is the responsibility of the Trip Leader to ensure that all drivers of all vehicles in the convoy are aware of any deviations in the route. • No driver will park or drive in the reverse direction to the hazard of other vehicles. • If a driver is trying to contact the rest of the group, he will turn on his headlights. This is the signal for the rest of the drivers to stop. • All gates must be left in the manner in which they are found. The second vehicle in the convoy must pull over and wait for all vehicles to pass and then re-join the convoy after ensuring that the gate is left as it was found. • When any form of recovery is in progress all those not directly involved in the rescue operations must keep well clear and at a safe distance. Parents are particularly asked to keep their children at a safe distance. • The use of radio transmitters does not replace convoy procedure. The trip leader will remind all drivers that convoy procedure should be followed before moving off. QUEANBEYAN 4WD SPECTACULAR 1-2 February 2020 Day 1 Rollanda & Steve, Wendy & Scott, Chris, Steve, Tania, Mark, Anne Another Queanbeyan Show and another extremely hot weekend. The temperature reached 42°C today, which meant only the very brave that were not actually working at the show managed to come to the showgrounds to see what was on offer. Pedestrian traffic started with a small crowd, but soon thinned out around midday. A mix of the heat, afternoon sports and the nearby Canberra bushfires keeping people away. The afternoon crowd was mainly other exhibitors checking out everyone else’s stands. A few people came by the Nissan Patrol Club stand. Some very interested in the Club, but no new members signed up. Day 2 Steve, Wendy & Scott, Chris, Steve, Tania & Fiona, Mark, Paul A much cooler day, compared to yesterday, with the temperature reaching 33°C, and the crowds taking advantage of the cooler morning air, which didn’t last very long. Today, Wendy did some Club shopping, looking for specials for meeting raffles, and Steve H went shopping to increase the stock for the club shop. A few more people very interested with the Club, and took home pamphlets and information should they decide to join later, however, we did have one new member join up later in the afternoon. Throughout the two days, the main drawcard to our stand was Chris C’s vehicle on display. We also had many Club members and friends of Club members stop by to say hello. As the Club’s Show Special continues till the end of February, we may still get some new members sign up through the website. Down the Track A look at 4WD Tracks Around Australia HAY RIVER TRACK, NT. All travellers to this area, both now and in the future, owe their thanks to the persistence of Jol Fleming from Alice Springs to have this area opened up for outback travel. Alice Springs Plenty Highway Hay River Track Birdsville During the mid 1990’s, Jol met Lindsay Bookie on one of his four wheel driver training courses. Lindsay told Jol he was from out that way, but Jol thought no more of it until 1998 when he was approached by the Ford Motor Company to do a Sales Incentive trip from Alice Springs to Birdsville. Jol contacted the Central Land Council regarding getting a permit to travel the Hay River Area, who in turn put Jol in contact with Lindsay Bookie. Lindsay was not keen at first to let anyone travel through his lands, but with further discussions, Jol was given the OK. Jol Fleming & Lindsay Bookie 22
In May 1998, Jol and Lindsay went to scout for a track down the Hay River. The going was so tough, that they only managed to get as far south as the Lake Caroline turn off. They then back tracked and an alternative road was found for the Ford venture. Unlike other areas of the Simpson Desert, there was no oil exploration seismic work carried out in this area, so it is still a true remote wilderness area. It has become an increasingly popular destination for 4WD enthusiasts looking for a different view of the Simpson Desert compared to the French and QAA lines. The track begins from Poeppel Corner and crosses over just south of the Plenty Highway. One of the best times to visit the Hay River areas is right after the rains, since this brings to life the flora and fauna of the desert, allowing visitors a great view of the colourful desert blooms. The same flora can make passage along the track somewhat slow, which means visitors should allow for plenty of time to complete the journey. When passing through the wetlands, visitors should look out for fish, shrimp and water birds, as well as the Perentie, which is the largest goanna in Australia. Anyone looking to undertake a 4WD trek of the Hay River will need to do their homework because this is definitely a track for the more experienced and prepared off-road travellers. Since the surroundings are remote, four-wheel drivers need to ensure they’re fully stocked for the journey, which can only take place between the months of March and November. During the hotter summer months, the desert is closed. One of the reasons the Hay River Track is so exciting is the fact that it was only recently opened to the public, so many visitors consider it to be a new and exciting territory to explore. Travellers need to take note that permits are required to pass through the desert. Bush camping is available along the track, while there are two designated camping areas: Batton Hill Camp and Gemtree. Visitors to the Batton Hill Camp will need to pay a camp fee and the site provides basic amenities, such as toilet facilities, showers and barbeques. The Gemtree campgrounds should be booked in advance and provide fuel facilities. One of the most popular sites along the Hay River Track is, of course, the Hay River itself, which can be difficult to traverse because of the soft sand. However, it isn’t likely for water to be present due to the arid conditions of the surrounding area. Preparation is the key when taking a journey such as this. The vibrant colours, narrow tracks, shifting sands and isolated surroundings make for a truly exciting venture into the desert. 23
UP THE CREEK A quick look at some of the great camp sites by our beautiful waterways KIAMA, NSW Kiama is a coastal town 120 kilometres south of Sydney in the Illawarra. One of the main tourist attractions is the Kiama Blowhole. Kiama features several popular surfing beaches and caravan parks, and numerous alfresco cafes and restaurants. Its proximity to the south of Sydney makes it an attractive destination for many day-trippers and people wanting to stay numerous nights. Kiama was the site of two strong volcanic flows, called the Gerringong Volcanics, which came out of Saddleback Mountain, now a collapsed volcanic vent. The Kiama Blowhole is part of an erosion process on the more recent rock, formed into columnar basalt. Before the cedar- getters arrived in the area around 1810, the local Indigenous Australians, Wodi Wodi of the language group Dharawal, had been using the land for thousands of years, moving every six weeks or so in family groups. This is supported by a midden of shells at nearby Bass Point used for more than 17,000 years. During this time the whole coastal hills was covered in rainforest and cedar brush. There is evidence of a flourishing culture with intricate possum cloaks, a developed song and story cycle, and a deep understanding of the many plants of the rainforest. Only a few remnants of rainforest survive along the escarpment in places like the Minnamurra Rainforest Centre. There is strong evidence of recent sea debris showing a mega-tsunami hit this coast around 1487 A.D according to Dr Ted Bryant of Wollongong University. The first European to explore the area was George Bass who stopped there on 6 December 1797 and viewed Kiama's blowhole. During the early settlement of eastern Australia, the Kiama area was settled by wheat farmers, since the soil was volcanic and rain-swept unlike most of Australia. Early Jamberoo was the population centre from about 1830 to the 1860s and when the wheat failed to grow, the farmers switched to dairying, and was one of the birthplaces of the Australian dairy industry with the first Dairy Factory (The Kiama Pioneer Factory) and first Dairy Co-operative in Australia. George Bass 24
There were three original major land grants, Thomas Surfleet Kendall (son of lapsed missionary Reverend Thomas Kendall), Michael Hindmarsh and Matthew Cignarella, all of which married sisters of the Rutter family. The Kendalls were cousins of Henry Kendall, the famous Australian poet. The Kendall name is remembered today in several places such as the spooky Kendall Cemetery in Kiama Heights and Kendalls Beach. The Hindmarsh’s are remembered in Kiama's main park, Hindmarsh Park, and after 10 generations still live on their original land. Kiama's next population boom was powered by its quarries, which multiplied rapidly in the early years of the 20th century. The basalt formed by two volcanic eruptions 240 million years and 66 million years ago was a valuable commodity for a growing colony, with the blue metal used to pave Sydney's roads and as ballast for its railways. It was very similar to the basalt found in Northern Ireland. There are still active quarries in the Kiama area, including the N.S.W. Railway Quarry, and the remnants of earlier quarries are easily visible throughout the town and often have facilities built Bombo Quarry inside them such as the Kiama Leisure Centre. One particular quarry, the Bombo Headland, is of scientific importance as it is the site of the discovery of the longest known geomagnetic polarity interval called the Kiaman Reverse Superchron. When Kiama Harbour was hollowed out after 17 years' work, and flooded in 1876, larger steamers such as from the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company could enter and a flourishing sea trade followed. The Kiama Pilot's Cottage was finished in 1881 and the Kiama Lighthouse in 1887. Kiama really hit its boom time in this period, from 1890 until the Great Depression in 1927, when many of the quarries closed. Over time tourism and housing growth turned Kiama into a dormitory suburb (where people travelled away to work) and summer tourist spot. Kiama is a tourism haven in summer, during which its population triples. The Kiama Pilot's Cottage is now a local history museum. Nearby, on Black Beach, is a memorial to the blue metal freighter SS Bombo, which capsized and sank outside Port Kembla harbour in a huge gale after departing Kiama for Sydney on 24 February 1949. Twelve of the fourteen crew were lost. SS Bombo in service as stores-carrier HMAS Bombo during WW2 The beaches around Kiama offer a large range of surfing conditions. Many surfing competitions are held here every year. These include Boyds Beach – Kiama Downs, Bombo Beach – Bombo, Surf Beach – Kiama, Easts Beach and Caravan Park – Kiama Heights, Kendalls Beach – Kiama and Mystics Beach – Minnamurra River. The name "Kiama" is derived from the Aboriginal word "kiarama", which means "Place where the sea makes a noise". Kiama is also known as the place where the mountains touch the sea. This is in reference to the Kiama Blowhole which attracts many visitors annually. The "Little Blowhole" is a lesser known blowhole as it does not share the same central location or the scale associated with the larger Kiama Blowhole. The Little Blowhole is on a headland south of the central part of Kiama between Easts and Kendalls Beaches. Both have areas for viewing, though the Kiama Blowhole attracts more tourists. A coastal walking track currently allows people to walk from Minnamurra to Easts Beach, past both blowholes. A 7 kilometre southern extension to this path has been opened to allow people to walk along the cliffs to Gerringong. Kiama Blowhole A few kilometres north at Bombo is Cathedral Rocks, a formation well known and visited, with a walk/cycleway going along the Kiama coast. There are other rock formations on these cliff headlands of moderate renown. The Kiama Post Office, one of many historic buildings, is known for its history and pink colour, although it was repainted in 2012. It is situated near Black Beach. Kiama has a strip mall of cafés, restaurants, art galleries and shops on Terralong Street. Also on this street is a war memorial, an historic fire station used for exhibits, and a small shopping centre. Kiama Post Office There is a strong art following and interest in cultural events in Kiama, and in 2013 an arts trail was introduced to showcase the work of individual artists, together with regular arts events in the area. Food and wine trails are also becoming more popular in the area. Kiama Lighthouse, on Blowhole Point, was built in 1887 and is situated close to the Kiama Blowhole. The point also contains a heritage pilot's cottage and a tourist information centre. North West of the Blowhole is Kiama Harbour, home to fishing boats and seafood market where you can buy local fish. The point also contains seaside cabins and a wonderful rock pool. A locally famous phenomenon is the local group of Australian Pelicans. The pelicans have been honoured with a metal statue at the harbour. Kiama Lighthouse 26
Seven kilometres southwest of the town is Saddleback Lookout atop the 600-metre high Saddleback Mountain with views over the Illawarra Plains and escarpment and south to Nowra, Pigeon House Mountain and Coolangatta Mountain. Saddleback and Noorinan mountains provide an impressive backdrop to the city. The Jamberoo Action Park, a mainly ride- orientated water-themed park, is situated 10 minutes inland of Kiama in the small town of Jamberoo. View from Saddleback Mountain Lookout West of Kiama in the green hills lies Jerrara Dam, built in the 1800s to supply water to the area. It is now a reserve. North of the Minnamurra River is Killalea Recreation Area, a nature reserve on Bass Point. It is south of Shellharbour. NATURE LOVER FLOWERING GUM The flowering gum or “Corymbia” is a fairly recent genus (previously in Eucalyptus) of about 110 species of evergreen trees, generally known as “bloodwoods”, with outstanding terminal flowers. Their nectar-rich flowers are white, yellow, cream, red, pink or orange with stamens held in cup-like bases. Urn-shaped capsules form after flowers fade, against aromatic gum leaves. They enjoy full sun and are tolerant of drought and light frost once established, can tolerate pruning if you so desire and need little else. Most are fast-growing and long-lived, however growing species outside of their endemic region can be problematic, with Western Australian species struggling in the wet, humid summers of the Eastern states. Corymbia ficifolia (Eucalyptus ficifolia) – one of Western Australia’s best, with red, orange, white or pink flowers and a rounded canopy to 9m tall, thrives in low humidity, however the following Summer Series hybrids have been developed for gardens across to Sydney and up to Brisbane. Grafting has made them tolerant of most soil types and also ensures that vigour, colour and size grow ‘true to type’. There are now many varieties of Mini Flowering Gums that grow up to 2-3 metres in height, which would suit a smaller garden. Some varieties can even be grown in a large pot. 30
