Message from the Grandmaster WTSDA & 2021 A s President and Grandmaster, I have not traveled beyond my home area since February of 2020. This is quite a contrast to the many years of visiting Regions across the globe. Yet, I have maintained contact with our membership through Zoom, WhatsApp, email and phone calls. I miss the face-to-face interactions, yet these technologies have kept us connected. Almost every day I attend virtual meetings and engage in conversations or email exchanges with our global community. It is my duty and obligation to serve you and the Association to the best of my ability… with much help provided by the dedicated administration and supportive members of the Association. You should know that the WTSDA and WTSDF Board of Directors, members of the Executive Committee and the Governance Committee are committed to professionally managing the Association. Gideon Lee and the staff at Headquarters - Ji Park, Glamil Rivas, and Caleb Hodge are back at work, staying safely apart and wearing masks to take care of daily Association business. Across all regions of the WTSDA, work continues by instructors and Masters to maintain clubs and studios, mostly through virtual instruction. They have persevered under unusual personal, governmental, and medical circumstances. Their outstanding efforts have approached the challenges during these pandemic times and provided safe and professional guidance, virtually, to their students. As students, please continue to support your studio by attendance, even if by Zoom, and paying your dues. With your help and support, we will all survive these pandemic years and forge ahead with our Tang Soo Do training in perhaps a new normal in the near future. In 2022, we will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the World Tang Soo Do Association. Among other venues, the anniversary year will be highlighted at the World Championship that is scheduled for June 23-25, 2022 with special Tang Soo Do and Ki Gong clinics prior to those days. You can begin planning now to attend the events including the after championship picnic at the World Headquarters. Next year we also plan to return to face-to-face training at the USA Masters Clinic which is planned for March 31 – April 3, 2022. In the meantime, continue with your Zoom training and remain safe when you are together by following the best protocols that science presents to us. I have had my two vaccinations and I hope that you will have access to them in the future. As many of you have said to me, on Facebook, Zoom, and other places, we are a FAMILY joined together by Grandmaster Shin’s vision and our love of Tang Soo Do. Our collective dedication to being supporting members of this family is robust and formidable. We shall survive and thrive together, and come out on the other side of the pandemic stronger and more dedicated than ever. Tang Soo! Grandmaster William R. On March 26th-28th 2021, the WTSDA Masters and chosen candidates came together to learn, train and share. While we were not able to gather in our usual home at the University of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama we improvised and adapted much like the rest of the world has had to do since the COVID-19 pandemic has changed all of our lives. The 2021 clinic took place virtually with members taking part from the United States, South America, Mexico, Caribbean, Europe, England, Africa, Papau New Guinea and many more. Our senior leaders came together simultaneously to work on improving hyungs, weapons and other parts of our Tang Soo Do curriculum. Friday afternoon offered a Business seminar led by Master Geoff Setyanto and his team as well as a wide variety of Ki Gong sessions led by Master Michael Inoshita and his team. Saturday’s sessions began at 9:00 am Eastern Standard Time which meant worldwide some of our Masters were waking in the very early morning hours while other were at the end their day and everything in between. Despite the time differences, we “sharpened our sword” especially when led in Hyung by Grandmaster Strong! We have all had to endure new ways of life since the pandemic changed all of our lives, however the true indomitable spirit and perseverance of these many martial artists were on full display as they are able to once again gather and do what they love! WTSDA News Welcome Mauritania, Africa T he WTSDA and Region 14 have welcomed a new country to the family - Mauritania in Africa. Region 14 now has 11 studios in 5 countries - South Africa, Mozambiqe, Botswana, Seychelles and now Mauritania. Mauritania is a country in northwest of Africa. Officially known as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, this country is home to just over 4 million people. The name Mauritania comes from the ancient Berber kingdom occupied by the Romans well into the 7th Century C.E. meaning “the place of the Moors”. Approximately three quarters of Mauritania is part of the Sahara Desert. As a result, most of the population lives in the southwest region of the country. The official religion of Mauritania is Islam. Much like the rest of Africa, there is a long history of colonisation in Mauritania stretching back to the 11th century. Mauritania was colonised by Arabs and later by the French. The result being that Arabic and French are the two most widely spoken languages in the country. In 1960, Mauritania became independent from the French. Eagle-eyed film fans will notice that blockbuster movies such as the Fifth Element were shot in the beautiful scenery that Mauritania has to offer. Mauritania is also famous for the ancient city of Chinguetti founded in the 8th Century as a stopping point for pilgrims on their way to Mecca. This oasis of dry-stone architecture was once one of the biggest centres of science, religion, and mathematics in West Africa. The city was declared a World Heritage site by Unesco in 1996 and houses thousands of medieval manuscripts. The foods in Mauritania consists of a lot of fish and lamb with side dishes like couscous. To drink, they specialise in mint tea which is poured from a height to form a nice frothy, foamy drink. For those with an adventurous palate, one can also find camel milk to drink. Mr. Cheik El Benani Boubaly, was born in Nouakchott, Mauritania in 1988. At the age of 12, he started training Shotokan Karate where he achieved the 2nd Degree Black belt. In 2019, Mr. Boubaly established contact with the WTSDA and began his transition into our Association. The COVID-19 pandemic made this difficult but Region 14 organized one instructor to work with Mr. Boubaly for one year until he was ready to test to Cho Dan in February of 2021. Mr. Boubaly is our first member and the pioneer of WTSDA in Mauritania. He is a full time Tang Soo Do instructor with 20 students at Tang Soo Do Mauritania. Instructor Certification Program A t the request of the Executive Committee, Master Homschek assembled a small team to bring together the building blocks of a formal Instructor Certification Program for WTSDA. This started with developing a written exam based exclusively on Traditional Tang Soo Do Volume 5 - Instructor’s Manual. Next with the assistance of Master Joe Scota and Master Sue Helsdon they identified and prioritized the elements of good instruction which could be tangibly evaluated in a formal review process (Practical Exam). With this data in hand the team then assembled a grading rubric which will be used at the formal evaluation for Instructor Certification. Master Homschek further expanded upon this work by developing an overall process flow and providing documentation of this flow and detailed descriptions of each element that is part of the grading rubric. Currently Master Homschek is working with the Executive Committee to edit the primary documents (Grading Rubric, Explanation of the Grading Rubric, and Process Flow) prior to working with a small group of Masters to review the program and begin test running the evaluation process within their studios to provide feedback to improve the program. With the Board of Directors approval, large scale implementation at the Association level will begin. The current time frame is to utilize the remainder of 2021 to polish the program through this test run process. The later part of 2021 will also involve development of additional documentation to facilitate implementation and assist the Regional Instructor Training Coordinators. Formal presentation of the entire program is targeted for the 2022 USA Masters Clinic. Implementation at the Regional level should begin in 2023. WTSDA News Do Bohk & Dee W hy do we wear a Do Bohk and Dee? We all chose to follow Grandmaster Shin’s vision, a method of training that keeps us physically and mentally healthy, enhances our discipline and improves our focus and awareness. Our training gives us skills we use in everyday life. Our Do Bohk and Dee are worn whenever we practice our Tang Soo Do, but why is it important? Here are many reasons why our Do Bohk and Dee mean more than just a training uniform. Tradition • Our Do Bohk can be traced through a long history, a garment worn for a specific purpose, designed for that purpose. • Traditional values of honor and integrity are recalled when wearing our Do Bohk. Respect for all that wear Do Bohks, sharing this common connection of traditional values of family and honor. • The color is white, representing simplicity, non-aggression, not standing out, humility, cleanliness and purity. Commitment Wearing our Do Bohk shows our commitment to train. It shows we have made the investment to wear the uniform and practice “the way.” Wearing the Do Bohk shows we care about improving ourselves. Practical • Our Do Bohk is designed to move freely with our technique. • Thicker material helps to protect our skin against abrasions and bruising while training, a second thick skin. • Our Dee wrapped securely around us, gives our core support and strengthens our lower back, improving our posture and therefore, our balance, while training. Belonging • We train together learning our art, we have the same mindset and our dobohk represents our oneness. We belong together. Knowledge • Our Do Bohk represents our knowledge and respect of our art. Our limited patches identify our unity, our certifications of knowledge and our years of training, yet give homeage to who we are and where we live. • Our Dee represents our official rank in our art, which refers to our time, experience and knowledge based on the minimum requirements for the belt being worn. Focus • When we wear our Do Bohk, all outside thoughts, distractions, frustrations and emotions are stored away. We enter into our sanctuary, prepared to train with our fellow Tang Soo Do practitioners, all with one mind, dressed the same, uniting us. Your Do Bohk and Dee are yours and yours alone. They are a part of you. Show them the respect they deserve as they accompany you on your journey of growth and improvement. Keep them clean, fold them properly, let them rest, so that they will help you in your training. Tang Soo! Master Roy Uttech, Yuk Dan 2021 Spring WTSDA & WTSDF Newsletter - Page 5

WTSDA News Why Do I Volunteer? “Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve…. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” ~Martin Luther King, Jr. L ast year was quite a year and 2020 will stand out in our minds for many years. It was a year where many experienced negative feelings of isolation, inconvenience, and intolerance. However that negativity was counteracted with the positivity of self-reflection, resetting of priorities and family and learning to adapt. We all have our own stories that we will tell in years to come. One common trend that often occurs after a major far-reaching crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic is an increase in volunteerism. The opportunity to volunteer comes in the form of time, skills and resources. The National Center for Charitable Statistics reported that more than 1.5 million nonprofit organizations are registered in the U.S. which provide food, shelter, health care, education as well as support, nurture and inspire all people. A study by the Urban Institute showed that volunteers are vital to nonprofits because more than 80% of nonprofits rely on volunteers to accomplish their day-to-day activities and long term objectives. Among those organizations are the World Tang Soo Do Association and the World Tang Soo Do Foundation. So, why do I volunteer? If you asked 1,000 people that question, you would get 1,000 answers. And all of them would be right. The wide variety of answers would fall in to two major categories; to give back to the community/organization or to gain new skills, experience and knowledge. My reasons for volunteering my time and skills are numerous. As a parent and wife, the family Tang Soo Do time is cherished; as a student, continuing to push my limits is invaluable; as an instructor, seeing students grow more confident and focused is priceless; and finally as editor of this newsletter, helping connect our membership and families is rewarding. I know that sounds like a credit card commercial but it is true! There are many opportunities to volunteer in your studio, region and the Association and you should take the initiative to help. The best side effect is making new friends and developing lasting relationships while helping the Association. Although many of the volunteer opportunities require no experience, there are some that require skills or knowledge. Below are two openings to volunteer but require special knowledge and skills and are vital as the Association moves forward. As the COVID-19 restrictions are being lifted and our Association resumes events, there will be many chances to volunteer. And through the Amazon Smile program, you don’t have to do anything special after you sign-up. As Championships, testings and other events are scheduled, there will be many duties you can help with - all you have to do is ask!! Finance Committee Master Lipstein, who has served as Treasurer of the World Tang Soo Do Association and the World Tang Soo Do Foundation since 2009 is looking for volunteers to serve as members of a Finance Committee. The Finance Committee will oversee the financial affairs of both WTSDA and WTSDF, including review of budgets, review of operating results, setting of financial policy and investment of available funds. Candidates should have a background in either accounting or finance, and be willing to meet electronically several times a year. One member of the Finance Committee will also be asked to serve as Assistant Treasurer, and be able to succeed Master Lipstein as Treasurer at some future point in time. Interested volunteers should contact Master Sandy Lipstein at wtsda.counsel@gmail.com. Legal Affairs Committee The Legal Affairs Committee functions as the in-house legal department for the WTSDA, WTSDF and WKGC LLC. Since the LAC works on a broad range of legal items for those entities, the LAC is seeking volunteers to assist with items such as contract negotiations, nonprofit transactions; crisis management; human resources; intellectual property matters including copyright infringement, terms of use for websites, and trademark filings; real property transactions; litigation management; filing of Form 1023s and other tax exempt filings and issues; corporate restructuring; review of issues related to offering services via the internet; franchise law issues, and other general corporate matters for an international organization. Expertise in these areas in the U.S. and those jurisdictions where dojang are located is sought. Paralegals, compliance professionals and attorneys are welcome! Interested volunteers should contact Master Kristen Winsko at wtsda.counsel@gmail.com. Tang Soo! Jeannette Arteca 2021 Spring WTSDA & WTSDF Newsletter - Page 7

The opportunity for everyone to get Clinic, and subsequently I was crestfallen when COVID-19 together and train while apart is something of a bonding activity, wreaked havoc around the world causing the cancellation of though in a different way than the in-person contact would the 2020 Masters’ Clinic. It will be talked about for years; “Do you remember opportunity to participate in the 2021 Master’s Clinic. back in 2021 when we had the Zoom clinic?” is something that For me, the clinic started off at 3 am Saturday morning with will be said for decades to come. Those who were there will the Business Seminar and then the Ki Gong Seminar; I had respond with pride, “Yeah, I was there! We persevered in our signed up for both optional events, wanting to make the most training through a global pandemic that shut down the most of my first Masters’ Clinic. Here in PNG, the full clinic began of the world!” at 11pm on Saturday. Throughout the clinic I imagined myself Tang Soo! in line with others. It was notable that the Master Instructors Tabitha Lutz were able to portray their energy and enthusiasm enough on KCCLA Speech Competition In October 2020, the Korean Cultural Center of Los Angeles with the King Sejong Institute hosted a video-submission long intensive Korean immersion course through Concordia College’s Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, Minnesota. Tang Soo! Déborah Joel, Argentina Ki Gong Practice F or almost an entire year, I suffered from back pain right between the shoulder blades. Sometimes the pain was so intense that I started to limit my daily physical activity and even limited hugs from my family. My Tang Soo Do instructor, Delia Galván (Estudio Moo Shin–Argentina) invited me to practice Ki Gong online with Gena Eiseman (Ketzal Martial Arts–USA) 4 times a week. I joined right away, and after a couple of months, I noticed the pain going away. I thought it was just going away by chance until I had to cut my practice to once a week because of my work schedule. Far from being by chance, the pain came back, not as intense as I had it, but it did come back. Since then, I have prioritized my Ki Gong practice. Another thing I suffer from because of my profession is dysphonia, a long-term chronic voice disorder. During 2019 I had to do long speech therapy treatments and permanently visit the otolaryngologist (ENT). My snoring was so bad that I would stop breathing, and of course, I was not getting any rest. In addition to my throat being dry, my vocal cords were scratched, accentuating my dysphonia. When I consulted my ENT, he said it was because I was breathing with my mouth open. It was nothing, and that I should sleep on my side. A few weeks ago, in one of Gena’s classes, we talked about how important it was to have a good habit of breathing through the nose. How damaging it is to our bodies to breathe through the mouth and to snore. I started to pay attention to my breathing and asked my family if I was still snoring, thinking that I wasn’t noticing due to my deep sleep. To my surprise, they said I haven’t snored in a while. To double-check, I had my husband pay attention for the following two weeks, and I slept facing up to try to provoke the snoring, and even with that, they confirmed that I was indeed not snoring anymore and my dysphonia has gotten so much better! Right from the beginning, my husband got invited to join the class. Unfortunately, he didn’t consider Ki Gong an activity that will benefit him. It wasn’t for him, he said. Fortunately, after witnessing all my experiences and observing the healing benefits that Ki Gong brings, he has decided to join our sessions. 2021 Spring WTSDA & WTSDF Newsletter - Page 11
World Ki Gong Club The freedom of movement without pain and nightly good sleep has changed my life, and all it took is just a few minutes of Ki Gong practice a day. I am aware that these are only visible aspects of profound changes that my person is experiencing. These are accompanied by a fundamental change in my mind and energy due to regular and constant practice. I have become a better martial arts practitioner, I feel much better and more connected to myself. I invite everyone to practice Ki Gong and discover how you can benefit from it because it works! Tang Soo! Déborah Joel, Argentina Ki Gong Corner - Gulf Coast Clinic O kay I admit it. I am a travel addict. Going to new places, seeing old friends, and gathering together is one of the things that makes World Tang Soo Do and World Ki Gong special. In a normal year I travel out of region 6-8 times to participate in WTSDA & WKG events. Tang Soo Do/Ki Gong as a way of life is informed by place and culture which is why it is so special to travel and train - it’s the same, but different. This pandemic hit us travel addicts hard. I missed: the hugs, the high fives, large groups of people, big cities, and small towns. I was so overjoyed when World Ki Gong was permitted to hold the Gulf Coast Ki Gong Clinic on May 1, 2021. As the first inter-regional event since the beginning of the pandemic, the Gulf Coast Ki Gong clinic was held both virtually and socially distant in-person. The clinic was held at the Lotus Ranch in the beautiful Texas Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin, Texas. Our clinic host’s Carla and Kent Ek, provided one of the most memorable things about the clinic - the food. The ranch provided commercial kitchen for the participants to prepare communal meals for each other. On Friday, Kent made woodfired pizzas. Patrick West made breakfast burritos, the entire clinic was scented by Kent’s brisket which he smoked for most of the day on Saturday. The in-person clinic was colored by a significant amount of rain for the clinic on Saturday. The sound of rain on the metal roof was at times so loud it was difficult to talk over. The clinic included instruction in basic ki gong and five phase theory, basic ki gong movements, five phase meditation, five animal ki gong and tae kuk ki gong. The virtual clinic was initially intended to be a simulcast of the in-person event, but due to weather and technical difficulties we were unable to broadcast from the ranch. Thankfully John Robertson lead the virtual participants through the same content we did at the in-person clinic. On Sunday prior to the leaving the ranch we had a session on the Simplified Yang 24 Tai Chi Form under clear blue skies. It was amazing to be with other people doing ki gong together. Hope to see you online or in-person at a ki gong event soon! Master Michael Inoshita, World Ki Gong Club 2021 Spring WTSDA & WTSDF Newsletter - Page 12
