PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hi Members, Another month rolls by and we are well into October. The good news is, it’s raining; 3 days so far and that is wonderful. Our outdoor Poker Machine come Smoking area is back up and running after the fire with a great new look including a couple of comfortable chairs and new larger TV’s. Two Shows coming up soon on the 27th October and the 24th November, they are probably the last shows until New Years Eve, so check the details at the front desk, or on the Web, to make a booking. It’s also that time of the year for the Christmas events. Our Ham raffles commence on the 15th November and continue through December. Check the posters throughout the Club for the nights they are run. For the children, the Toy raffle will be on the 22nd November, so come along with the family and have dinner and hopefully win something. Our Badge draws are still running Thursday night and 2 draws on Sunday. The Thursday night draw is close to $8.000.00 (at the time of writing) so if your name comes out and you are not in the Club, you will be disappointed. I know because it has actually happened to me. Golfer Bowlers Day 1st October, was a great day. I believe everyone enjoyed themselves, the weather was kind to us, and that helps. Big thanks to Warwick Forrest who very professionally took care of the Bowls, and most importantly, the “onions”, and I took care of the Golf. We commenced at 10.00am with a shotgun start for golf with 8 holes being played and we finished with about 12 ends of Bowls. In between we had a BBQ sausage on a roll and a drink. It was very full on, but it was about having fun, and judging by the raucous laughter on the Bowling Greens, that was achieved. 4
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The day is about getting together with people out of your normal sporting area and experiencing something different. Some Golfers can hit a ball 250 metres straight but can’t bowl a bowl 25 metres straight, can they?? We wanted everyone to have a chance of being a winner on the day even if they couldn’t play golf or bowls, hence the prize getters were drawn from a hat, with 1st and 2nd awarded for both games. Thanks to Men’s and Women’s Bowls and Men’s and Women’s Golf Committees for the generous prizes (I think they are all alcoholics, as most of the prizes were bottles of wine), with enough left over for lucky door prizes, which added interest to the day. Thanks again, to Jan Jones, Ian Richardson, Donna Mitchell and Trevor Walker. Big thanks to our “Chef’s extraordinaire” in the form of Gary Clarke and Andrew McDonald and helpers. The Men Bowlers always offer their services to cook, I wonder if they do it at home?? Your services are very much appreciated. Pro-Am coming up on the 19th October; probably not too late to enter, $50.00 per person, and Darren will find you a Team if you don’t have one. Melbourne Cup, Tuesday 6th November; check on the web for the various functions, there is golf and lunch in the Burgundy Room, or entertainment and lunch in the Auditorium, or just a seat in the front lounge with a drink, and the Tab screens, with sweeps sold throughout the day. MEN’S BOWLS Hi all, Here we are at this again, it’s getting close to that time of year again, No it’s not Santa time, I’m talking about but it’s AGM season, Our mens bowls AGM is in a couple of weeks and the Everglades Country Club is not too far behind it. As I type this up nominations have closed for positions in our AGM and i’m looking forward to the meeting. As such, I think that it would be remiss of me if I don’t spend some time in this report to thank our highly valued sponsors who help fund our activities., these organisations deserve our patronage and respect. Our Mens Bowls sponsors are: Creightons Funeral Directors R &W Real Estate Edwards Meats WSG Group Electrical and Plumbing Breezeway Blinds Blackwall Tyres Charcoal Chickens at Umina Home Hardware Campbells Bendigo Bank Waratah Sports Erina Bourke Road Store Kuoch Chemist Well the month has been another busy one with a shirts and skirts, Singles Consistency championships , super 9 pennants and our first ever 242 Mixed Pairs tournament. The month started off with another well attended Shirts and Skirts day. This has been a very popular monthly event and I do know the committee is well pleased with the numbers attending this event. As I type this up the Singles Consistency Championship final is being played between Kevin Hughes and Max Hull, and it’s a great game, very close all the way so far. But in the end Max Hull has reigned supreme winning 150 to 124. The Super 9’s on a wednesday this year has been a great success , Our Everglades team is performing well and leading our section . Lets hope our luck and form continues.
MEN’S BOWLS Lastly on Saturday 29th, we celebrated the work of Frank and Noelene Pengelly for our club with our initial 242 Mixed Pairs tournament. The day was well supported with 30 mixed teams of pairs and we played 3 games of 10 ends. The result was a major surprise with Steve Guilmartin and Lizzie Cook winning, Steve said in his thank you speech, He thought that Lizzie carried the day as she played some outstanding bowls and he was blown away by her performance. I also wish to welcome our new members who have transferred in from Woy Woy Sporties. It is very sad to see a club get into trouble like it has but small bowls clubs over the last few years have had lots of problems and many are closing, I saw on Facebook only on Friday this week, that Rockhampton Bowls Club in Qld is closing due to financial difficulties. I should also mention the pleasing numbers that are turning up for our Tuesday social day. Numbers have increased to an average of 30 to 40 members. The committee has also changed the format once a month to nominated teams instead of single entry. Oh well that’s another month, I’ll see you all out on the green Brian Dolan Publicity Officer

MEN’S GOLF OCTOBER GOLFERS BLOG Welcome to the October edition of the Everglades monthly golfers blog. Keeping members informed of all things golf Everglades. COURSE Isn’t it funny that as soon as you place a nearest the pin collection bucket for drought relief, the rain hasn’t stopped falling. Over 100mm this October and we’re only one week in. Can somebody place a col- lection bucket for flood relief so we can start our Championships? That being said, the course is looking a treat. Greens are now being cut to 3mm & returning to their best & fairways now being cut at 10mm due to the recent rain/weather. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Kellie, our new mem- ber to the green staff. Apparently she was a clear standout during the interview process so please make her welcome. The boys, sorry the staff have recently distributed 35 tonne of sand to bunkers on holes 3,6,8,9,10 & 16 and have plans underway( if the powers above see fit) to reconstruct tees 8, 11, 14 & 15. These tees will hopefully be completed by early February. By the way if you haven’t already got the memo, Preferred Lies are No Longer Allowed. 14

RIPPER!! Well done to Steve Wellsby with a birdie 2 on the 16th hole. DUMMY AWARD: Just as Steve Wellsby was basking in the glory of winning two balls today he got clobbered by Ross Hurley who awarded him the dummy just because he played the round today with a kiddie’s golf bag. TOUGH! STIRRER’S PADDLE: Nigel Tarr who wasn’t here today. Doesn’t that mean that he didn’t technically “bring it”? Go get him, Waz!! THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: How does the Man in the Moon cut his hair? Eclipse it! 20

STIRRER’S PADDLE: Nigel “No Show” still has it for September.
SWAMPIES THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: When I read in the newspaper about the dangers of drinking alcohol, I decided there and then that I would never buy another newspaper. Tuesday 11th September 2018 The course is back to good condition following a greens renovation. Today was Game One of the “Cock-of-the-Walk” Round Four and Rod (Pretty) Blake put in a strong performance which will be hard to run down. Results for today: WINNER: Rod (Champ) Blake 28 points / 17 h’cap RUNNER-UP: Rob Pore 23 points / 10 h’cap NTP 12th: Rod (Fancy Shorts) Blake 1.78 metres (sank the putt for a birdie) NTP14th: Rob Pore 0.51 metres (Also sank the putt for a birdie) NTP 15th (B Grade) Paul Muir 0.60 metres LONGEST DRIVE A John Perks LONGEST DRIVE (B) Terry Glover BRADMAN BALL: Graeme Beddy 11 points / 20 h’cap Ball Winners Breaking Handicap: Phil Player, Graham Kolln, Dennis Quinton, Rod Blake, Rob Pore. Weekly Lottery: Peter (Chucka) Goswell. (Might pay for the coffee stains, eh Phil)! SPECIAL MENTIONS: Dennis (2 “N’s”) Quinton also had a birdie 2 on the par 3 twelfth. A record score for the Swampies today with Rod Blake scoring 28 points. WOW!! Go get him, Mr. Handicapper! DUMMY AWARD: Phil (Fancy Pants) Player decided to give the dummy to Rod (Sports Shorts) Blake for his continual sartorial attire! It was a close thing as Peter Goswell and Nigel Tarr spat the dummy and changed tables, simply because Phil Player had the misfortune to spill most of his coffee over Pete. Accidents DO happen, you know! STIRRER’S PADDLE: Nigel Tarr brought the paddle along today. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: I think the worst time to have a heart attack is during a game of charades! 22

NICE! DUMMY AWARD: Rod (Pretty) Blake was going to award the dummy back to Phil Player for trying to outdo him in the fancy shorts department. Just as well that he didn’t, because I could see this going back and forth forever. He did award it to Handicapper Paul Muir because he took two strokes off his handicap from last week – Rod shouldn’t be surprised! I call that a brave move – or a totally stupid one. Editor. STIRRER’S PADDLE: Still with Nigel Tarr. (Can’t wait till BBQ Day)! THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK: 1. If Dracula can’t see his reflection, how does he get his hair so neat? 2. If ghosts can walk through walls how come they don’t fall through the floor? 23

LADIES GOLF Mea Culpa! Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, my August re- port did not appear in email form, and September was missing from the Bulletin. However, in an attempt to turn adversity into triumph, I shall plough on and make mention of some of the events in August. Shirley’s Shuttle Day was generously sponsored by a retired member, Colleen Guy. The group that ‘shuttled’ their way to the winners circle, were Marie Gaven, Merryll Mead, Kathy Yewdall & Jan Poole, followed hot on their heels by the runners up, Patsy Ann Kentwell, Carmel Brown, Sue Mallie & Helen Love. Congratulations to Lyn McMurray, Kathy Weber and Gayle Colley, all achieving eagles in August. Each month from March through September, 3 delighted women come to the microphone to express their pleasure in winning a medal, and it was no different for our August medal round. Pat Clarke won on a countback to Lorraine George for Division 1. Margie Murray took out Di- vision 2, and Josie Cadden was very happy to win Division 3. Following into September with our last Medal round of the year, a hat trick was had by Gwen Gray, winning her third Medal this year in Division 1 - quite an achievement. Jackie Crawford had a birthday round in Division 2, and Carol Post ‘posted’ a personal best of 61 nett for Division 3, a mem- orable month! 26
LADIES GOLF CCWGA Charity Day at Gosford was represented by 10 of our women who qualified for the event, with congratulations to Judy Andrews who won the Division 1 Stableford Brooch against a large field. As usual, we all look forward each year to Death by Chocolate - the clue to the prizes is in the title! With a generous sponsorship by Brian Reid off Coastal Funerals, we played a Single Par & 2BBB (always a challenging game!), the winners - Division 1 Mella Rickit , Julie Elliott in Division 2 and Coral Walker Division 3. The 2B was won by the team of Jane Moffatt & Heather Burrett. All those who were at Presentation were winners on the day, as each table received a bowl of chocolates provided by President Donna. A big thank you to Patsy Elliott, as Patron of Everglades Country Club, Patsy donated $50 towards an inaugural Patrons Day for the best over the field score, won by Sue Mallie with a whopping 40 points. Del Taylor had a hole in one whilst holidaying in Sawtell recently - she will talk you through it if you are inclined to ask! The CCWGA and the Hunter River District held an inaugural team event challenge for lower markers at Toukley on Monday 2nd, won convincing- ly by our District, 10 1/2 to 4 1/2. Donna (never say die) Mitchell won her match 2 up after ‘clawing’ back from 3 down. 27
Ten women strode out on the first hole for this years Shootout, one by one, hole by hole, each was eliminated, however, the presentation of a ‘blingy’flute filled with champagne eased the disappointment. By the 9th hole only two remained in the contest; a tense moment around the green as each woman had a ‘chip off’ over a bunker to the hole. Steph Rapmund’s chip was a beauty, acknowledged with great sports- manship by Gwen Gray coming in as runner up. A terrific few hours, and some great golf by all participants. Lots happening this month - Captain Vs Presidents Day, Vets Closing Day and our Women’s AGM. The nomination forms for Committee will be out soon, so if you would like to contribute in the running of women’s golf, fill out a nomination form and, give it a go. 28
