“A View from the Pew” by George W. Reilly Pope Francis and the Latin Mass When Pope Benedict XVI liberalized permission for celebration of the older Latin Mass in 2008, some parishes, including here in Rhode Island, started offering the so-called Tridentine-rite Mass in Latin as part of their weekly schedule. Now that Pope Francis has retracted that permission, however, the mass will no longer be celebrated. It’s a small reminder that, against all odds, Pope Francis, after 8 1/2 years on the job, seems destined to leave behind a considerable liturgical legacy. It’s not what people expected in April 2013, when Francis, a Jesuit, was elected Pope. By reputation, Jesuits are considered fairly indifferent to the liturgy and have never prioritized liturgy in the way other religious orders do. Their founder, Ignatius Loyola, never established a tradition of common prayer, wanting them to be free to pursue the Church’s pastoral needs. Thus, when a Jesuit Pope was elected in 2013, most devotees of liturgical matters had low expectations. Well, surprise, surprise! Pope Francis is also keenly politically astute and he has steadily gone about trying to reshape the way Catholics pray and worship. In general, Pope Francis’ top liturgical priority appears to be to recapture and consolidate the vision expressed in the progressive liturgical movement that led up to the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), and which was codified in the original reforms issued after the council under St. Pope Paul VI. “To doubt [Vatican II] is to doubt the intentions of those very fathers who exercised their collegial power in a solemn manner “cum Petro et sub Petro” (“with Peter and under Peter”) in an ecumenical council, and, in the final analysis, to doubt the Holy Spirit itself who guides the Church,” the Pope insisted. Pope Francis’ signature move in that regard, clearly, is his July 16 “motu proprio” (“on one’s own initia- tive”) with which the pontiff withdrew the permissions for celebrating the older Mass granted by his pre- decessor. In so doing, Pope Francis argued that while Pope Benedict hoped his concessions would fos- ter greater unity in the Church, experience has shown the results to be greater division instead. Pope Francis wants to ensure that all Catholics eventually celebrate only the reformed liturgy that fol- lowed Vatican II and has appointed clergy who share his vision and are now in charge of liturgical poli- cy. After years of tolerating the more tradition-minded Cardinal Robert Sarah of Guinea as his prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Pope Francis in May appointed English Archbishop Arthur Roche to that post, someone more in keeping with the pope’s own prefer- ences. And, just recently, Pope Francis named Msgr. Guido Marini, who had been in charge of the Pope’s own liturgical celebrations under both Pope Benedict and Pope Francis, as the new bishop of Tortona in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. The transfer means the pope now will be able to appoint a new master of liturgical ceremonies, presumably someone also in sync with what the pontiff wants. One pro-Latin Mass website declared that the pontiff is waging “systemic cultural genocide” on tradi- tionalist Catholics. Time will tell whether his changes stick, or whether some future pope decides to re- open some doors he has tried to slam shut. No matter what happens, Pope Francis has defied expecta- tions. I thought you should be aware of this important shift in our Roman church structure. Stay healthy and enjoy the crisp fall weather while you take a stroll outdoors.
Religious Education News Classes for grades 1 through 8 will be starting up on Sunday, October 24th. If you have not registered your child for classes yet please do so as soon as possible. Regis- tration forms are available at the entrance of the church. Classes will be held on Sun- day mornings, beginning at 9:00AM in the church hall, and end following the 10:30 AM Mass. All students must attend the 10:30 Mass, hopefully with their families. FYI: we will follow the guidelines set by the CDC and the State of Rhode Island re- garding mask wearing. We will start the school year with a special project that will run through November 21st. It is a Thanksgiving Project that will support children in our state who are in need. It is a TOY DRIVE to benefit the families serviced by “Children’s Friend”. In the past we have asked our students to provide food items for Thanksgiving baskets distributed to needy families in our area. This year we would like our students to help their peers by donating toys that will bring other children joy. Items such as books, dolls, puzzles, sports items, action figures, etc., will be donated by our students and collected in a box at the entrance of the church. Of course, all parishioners are invit- ed to join our students in this project. Our Catechists are looking forward to greeting you on October 24th and to having a great year in the Religious Education Program. See you then.
