Friday, October 1 11:00AM Online event Online Premier of In Search of White Crows - Winner of the Rochester International Film Festival for Best Film. The true story of the Fox Sisters who, on March 31, 1848 in Palmyra New York, claimed to have communicated with the spirit of a dead man murdered years earlier who was buried in the cellar of their house. Monday, October 4 6:00PM Zoom event Composting, Clean-Up & Five Keys to Fall Gardening- Learn from the founder of Fruition Seeds, Petra Page-Mann, how to compost and close down your garden. Registration link found online or by calling the library. Wednesdays in October 6:00PM (10/6, 10/13, 10/20 & 10/27) An Exploration of the book Caste: the Origins of Our Discontent - Join us for a four part deep dive discussion of the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson. Lynne Westmoreland, Humane Educator, will facilitate the discussion into this insightful book. This program is an in-person series, held at the Victor Farmington Library, as well as online via Zoom. (We encourage in-person attendance, if possible.) For details and to register, please see our online calendar. Thursday, October 7 6:00PM Community Conversation: Creating a Centrally Located Community Garden - The Victor Farmington Library and the Victor Farmington Food Cupboard welcomes your input on creating a centrally located community garden. Join us for a conversation exploring the possibilities of creating a vibrant, community oriented space for raising food and developing neighborly relationships with others. Bring your ideas, enthusiasm and questions to this informal conversation. Our Cranes are Ready to Fly! Thank you for making our 1000 Cranes Project such a huge success! With the help of dozens of patrons, we received over 1400 cranes, which have been decorating the library throughout the summer. It is time to send the cranes out into the community, sharing their beauty and the healing tradition that they represent. Beginning October 1st, we will have strands of cranes available for you to pick up for yourself, for loved ones, or for locations that might appreciate them, such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice care, child care centers, etc.
Saturday, October 9 10:00AM Create a Self-Contained Terrarium – Learn how to make your own self- sustaining terrarium! Bring your own clear glass container with a sealable top, or use one of ours. (Suggested donation of $3, payable the evening of the class.) Monday, October 11 6:00PM Travels and Wildlife Research in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) – Cara Love, PhD will share her experiences and photographs from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in Belarus. Cara's photos and research provide a glimpse into the impacts of long term radiation exposure on the wildlife of the area, particularly the wolves and raccoon dogs, as well as poignant photographs of abandoned homes and villages, wildlife of the region, and stories from the surrounding communities. Thursday, October 14 6:00PM Travel Tips from a Travel Agent - Learn some choice travel tips from travel agent Jackie Mertens, to help take the stress out of planning your next vacation. Tuesday, October 19 6:00PM Medicare 101 - Learn the basics of Medicare, with enrollment tips to make the transition easier, as well as how to avoid penalties. Thursday, October 21 6:00PM Paranormal Investigations: What, Why and How—Including Local Legends and Paranormal Activity - Learn what paranormal investigators do, compare and contrast this with popular TV shows, and discuss places that have been investigated, as well as local legends and places with paranormal activity. Join us for this fascinating exploration. There will be plenty of time for questions! Presented by members of the Monroe County Paranormal Investigations team. Thursday, October 28 5:30PM Holiday Card Making- Join Angela Fisher for another Card Making Made Easy class! This time, you will learn how to make holiday cards, and get enough supplies for 20 cards, to complete at home. (There is a $20 fee for this class. Please bring a check made out to Angela Fisher or cash to the library by 10/11.)
