HAPPY NEW YEAR 2021 A MESSAGE FROM JO STEDMAN MATHS HUB LEAD SUSSEX MATHS HUB To all my colleagues in Sussex and beyond, I wish you a very happy new year. This term is already shaping up to be one of the most challenging experiences that we as teachers have faced in our careers. We're learning new technology on the fly, supporting students both in school and out, and many of us are also trying to balance this with schooling our own children too. I wanted to say thank you to you, one and all. The dedication, perseverance and sheer strength of will that I've seen among my colleagues over the past few weeks has been incredible. From SLT to NQT, from TAs to office staff, the collective drive to support our students, and each other!, has been an inspiration. Maths Hub continue to support our wider community, with flexibility being key across all our Work Groups. There's been a shift in focus to support our colleagues with Online Learning, and links to our recent Webinars on Remote Teaching can be found in this newsletter. As always, we're here to help and support when you need us. Stay Safe Jo
WEBINARS TEACHING PRIMARY MATHS REMOTELY BUILDING REASONING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING INTO REMOTE LEARNING DATE: Thursday 28th Jan TIME: 16:00 - 17:15 GUEST SPEAKER: Gareth Metcalfe - I See Maths www.iseemaths.com Would you like to develop your skill set with teaching maths remotely? Are you keen to really engage your pupils with remote lessons that develop their reasoning and problem solving? If so, look no further because the Sussex Maths Hub would like to invite you to their next free webinar! We are thrilled to welcome our guest host Gareth Metcalfe, the highly regarded mathematician, author of the fantastic 'I See Reasoning' and 'I See Problem Solving' e-books and creator of the inspirational website ‘I See Maths’. Gareth, an NCETM accredited PD lead, has produced a wealth of materials to support primary mathematics and is excited to support teachers with the challenges they face teaching high quality maths remotely. In this session, a range of techniques will be shared for building reasoning and problem-solving into remote learning activities. We will look at questions that allow children to spot patterns and find different possible answers. Then, we will see how challenges can be adapted, extended and explored in different ways. This will deepen thinking for all children and allow for creative, unique responses. An exciting vision for remote maths learning! Our Sussex Maths Hub Team will also be on hand to field questions and foster a spirit of true collaboration. Our last webinar on remote learning was very positively received with participants commenting: "Thank you. This was brilliant and very useful!" "Very useful. Thank you so much!" "Thank you! Lots of brilliant ideas and helpful resources." "Lots to go away and think about/share." So, don't delay...book your place now, pull up a chair, pour a cup of tea and get ready to be inspired!
