Fair Hill Foundation Newsletter November/December 2020 FEI Gives Final Confirmation to Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill Tim Bourke and Quality Time compete in Dressage at the Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill’s test event in August. Photo by Amy Dragoo The international Maryland 5 Star will top the equestrian calendar at Fair Hill each October for the next five years, the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI), the equestrian sport’s international governing body, announced this week. Official word followed receipt of FEI’s formal verification of the event’s 5 Star (CCI5*-L) status following its evaluation in August of the newly constructed Fair Hill Special Event Zone on the 5,000-acre property owned by the State of Maryland. “The Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill will be a significant addition to our country’s Eventing calendar and is the result of a major, multi-year initiative to bring a second CCI 5*-L to the U.S.,” said Bill Moroney, Chief Executive Officer of US Equestrian. “This event is the culmination of that vision, and we’re looking forward to working with the Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill team to support a successful event in 2021 and beyond.” “On behalf of The Fair Hill Organizing Committee (FHOC) and our partner Fair Hill International, we want to thank the FEI for its continued support,” said Jeff Newman, FHOC President & CEO. “This validation of the new Fair Hill Special Event Zone to host a 5 Star level event is yet another exciting step forward as we gear up for the inaugural Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill next Fall.” Proud Past • Infinite Future The Campaign for Fair Hill
In 2017, the United States Equestrian Federation’s (USEF) board of directors selected Fair Hill as the site for the newest 5 Star competition on the international Eventing circuit. Last year, the Maryland Board of Public Works approved funding for the construction of Fair Hill’s Special Event Zone to serve as the annual host site for the Maryland 5 Star. The Fair Hill Foundation is charged with raising $10 million to match the Board of Public Works’ $10 million commitment to the project. Phase One, including construction of a new cross-country course designed by renowned course designer Ian Stark, as well as new dressage and show jumping arenas in the infield of Fair Hill’s newly-renovated historic turf course, was completed this year. FEI officials were on site in August as competitors used the site for the first time since construction was completed in February 2020. The 3 Star (CCI3*-S) level event became the test event for the Maryland 5 Star after the original test event planned for April was canceled due to the pandemic. Only seven locations in the world are approved to host 5 Star-rated events, the pinnacle of Eventing, and a higher level than the Olympics (CCI4*-L). Next year, Maryland will join Kentucky as the second location in the United States to host a 5 Star, and one of only two states to feature an Eventing competition of this caliber in addition to a Triple Crown race. As part of Governor Larry Hogan’s proclamation of October as Maryland Horse Month, the Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill hosted a virtual event. Exclusive content can still be viewed on the event’s official website: maryland5star.us/virtualevent along with new video releases featuring more information about this exciting event coming to Maryland in Fall 2021. Fair Hill Shines on the International Stage Fair Hill is playing a starring role in the international 2020 Bloodstock Notebook, a stunning 242-page book entitled, What the Bloodstock Business Reads in Bed, published in the U.K. to coincide with the December Sales at Tattersalls. Proud Past*Infinite Future: The People of Fair Hill It has been more than a century since the 1912 founding of Foxcatcher Hounds at Montpelier, now known as the home of U.S. President James Madison, Father of the Constitution and Architect of the Bill of Rights in Orange County, Virginia. William du Pont, Jr., who spent his childhood living there with his parents, William du Pont and Annie Rogers Zinn and his sister, Marion du Pont Scott, moved the pack from Virginia to Fair Hill in 1926 and created a haven for foxhunting on 8,000 acres on both sides of the Maryland-Pennsylvania line, building kennels and accommodations for hunt staff in 1929. He went on to establish a large beef cattle operation and construct an international level steeplechase turf track and timber course on the property and, for 85 years, the Fair Hill Races drew the nation’s finest turf and timber horses to compete in this beautiful northeast corner of Maryland. Today, Fair Hill is building on the proud traditions Mr. du Pont created through the efforts of numerous talented horse people ranging from a world class veterinarian, some of the nation’s leading Thoroughbred trainers, and dedicated volunteer members of the Fair Hill Board of Directors. In the coming months, the Fair Hill Bugle will feature profiles about the leaders who are building on Mr. du Pont’s proud past and taking Fair Hill into its future of infinite possibilities. She started practice in 1986 under the watchful eye of long time US Equestrian Team veterinarian Dr. A. Martin Simensen in South Hamilton, MA. Year-End Giving Opportunities: Strategic Tax-Wise Ways to Give to Fair Hill As December 31, 2020 and the opportunity to enjoy year-end tax advantages while helping the Fair Hill Foundation nears, we remind you that in addition to fully tax- deductible outright gifts of cash, gifts of appreciated assets or from your IRA may enable you to make a much larger gift than you imagine is possible. Gifts of Appreciated Assets: a Gift that Costs You Less You can support the Fair Hill Foundation without dipping into your cash reserves by donating appreciated assets such as stocks or privately held business interests directly to us. This strategy can eliminate capital gains taxes which would incur if you sold them separately before donating the cash, therefore ensuring that the Fair Hill Foundation receives the full value of the asset. When you make charitable gifts to the Fair Hill Foundation of stock, bonds, mutual funds, or other long-term appreciated assets (assets you have held for over one year and that have grown in value) you receive a double tax benefit: 1. A charitable deduction for the current fair market value of the asset. 2. No tax liability on your capital gain in the asset. You will receive a tax break for the appreciation on which you never paid taxes. By using appreciated assets, your gift costs you less. Giving Now and Later from Your IRA Many Americans save through retirement accounts like an IRA or 401 (k), and often these accounts can be a significant portion of an individual’s wealth portfolio. Many strategies can be advantageous for donors who wish to support non-profit institutions like Fair Hill Foundation. Giving Now: The CARES Act of 2020 increased the age for the required minimum withdrawal to age 72. However, if you are age 70 ½ or older you can still authorize a gift directly to charity of up to $100,000 per year and not take the money into income, making a charitable IRA rollover a terrific way to support the Fair Hill Foundation this year. Giving Later: A gift of retirement assets directly to charity as part of an estate planning strategy can be very tax efficient. In some situations, it can mean more funds for charities and heirs alike. Consider naming the Fair Hill Foundation as the remainder beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement account. Not only easy, it is also a smart strategy to save on estate taxes. If your goal is to support charity as part of your legacy while also leaving assets to family members, it may be more tax efficient to leave cash and appreciated assets to heirs, while making charities the beneficiaries of retirement assets upon your death.
