NSU 2021 Message from the Female Football Co-ordinator Female football at the club The girls’ junior and youth football this season comprises of 7 teams, including two teams for both 10th and 12th grade and one each for the 11th, 13th, and 16th grade. Some of the older teams are continuing with a core group of players, and the resulting friendships have translated into confidence and faster development. In our last full season, our U16 girls team won every game of their regular season, and their knockout competition. Some of our older girls are also playing for the senior team when needed and are coaching the younger girls’ teams. The coaching has been particularly successful, with the younger kids really relating well to older female role models. 10TH GRADE GIRLS Our 10th Grade Girls division has had an incredible increase in numbers this year! We are thrilled to have 23 players, making up two teams registered in this age group. The two teams, Lens and Lille, are lucky to be coached during the week by NSU/TGS high school girls’ players. The high school girls bring a great energy to the younger girls, but the younger girls certainly bring their own energy to the game as well! Stop by the pitch on a Thursday afternoon or Saturday morning and you are likely to hear them from a while away, cheering each other on and having a good old time for themselves! These two teams have bonded already – they are playing good football and making good friendships along the way. GIRLS 10TH GRADE nsu.org.nz
NSU 2021 12TH GRADE GIRLS Asked what she loves most about football, Addisyn Smith, a player in the NSU 12th grade girls team ‘Espanyol’ replied: “I love to play soccer because it gets me outside running around, gives me the opportunity to make new friends, it challenges me and it’s really fun.” The sentiment that football ticks all the boxes for girls is echoed by team members who ‘love running the field and tackling the opposition’ (Alice Gillies) and Celeste Parsons ‘loves the sense of achievement’. Mum to Dana Ramsay from the same team said her daughter ‘is absolutely loving football and meeting all the girls’. With participation rates in girls’ and women’s football increasing 35% in the past five years, it is not hard to see why girls are so enthusiastic about playing the beautiful game. 16TH GRADE GIRLS The 16th grade team has kept a core group of girls for the last few years which has been fantastic for their development and confidence. They have become a great group of friends, eager to learn and improve. The last couple of seasons especially have been very successful in terms of results, but also in how they have consistently improved. They are off to a winning start again this season, winning their first three games. Several of the team now also volunteer as coaches with the younger girls, which has been great for their development and for the younger girls. Allister Irving Female Football Co-ordinator nsu.org.nz
