Outdoor Classroom Day is a global campaign to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play. On the day,
thousands of schools around the world take lessons outdoors and prioritise playtime. In 2017, over
2 million children in over 100 countries took part. This year, on 17 May, Merrifield took schoolwork outdoors.

From the Executive Head, Dr Guy Hartley
It has been a busy couple of weeks with a range of sporting, cultural and academic activities taking place. Our
students have performed admirably at the Port Rex Lions Eisteddfod with our various marimba bands and Foun-
dation Phase choir excelling in achieving golds and special mentions. Particularly pleasing is to see the growing
number of individual instrumentalists participating in the eisteddfod from Merrifield. This has led to the intro-
duction of “Merrifield Unplugged” – a showcase of our soloists and their musical talents at a special musical
evening held on Tuesday 22 May, which is certain to become an annual event.
Sports results have been encouraging with hockey leading the way, justifying the construction of the Astro turf
as our anchor project of the new sports precinct. For the first time, all our college boys’ teams won their match-
es in the hockey derby against Stirling last weekend at the U14A, U16B and 1st team levels. The number of Bor-
der hockey representatives – both boys and girls at prep and college levels – has never been higher. As the
teams build and progress, there certainly is a great deal of excitement and anticipation to host our own hockey
 derbies in the 2019 season.
The focus of the academic term now shifts as we enter an examination and assessment period. Students who
have applied themselves diligently and consistently throughout the term can certainly face the exams with con-
fidence. By following a clear study plan and being dedicated in their preparations, they will be in a solid position
to achieve their academic goals this term. All the best for a successful exam period, everyone.

SURFING
11 May: Nahoon Junior Reef Open 2018. Merrifield Surfers
were fully invested in the Nahoon Junior Reef Open, powered
by Twizza and Sea Harvest, hosted by Buffalo City Surf riders
and Border Surfing. This National 3A event brought the best
junior surfers from around South Africa to surf our local Na-
hoon beach break this past weekend. The waves turned on and
the weather was perfect for the jam packed two days of
surfing. As always our Merrifield Surfers dominated and were
involved in both surfing the comp and working at the event. A big shout out to Tom Lindhorst and Miguel Da Silva
for managing the Priority Board, Lhea Johnston for working as Beach Marshal and being the Manual Totaliser. Con-
gratulations to Byron Emslie, Sebastian Harris, Reilly Mare and Lhea Johnston for making it into the quarters and
semi-finals respectively and a massive congratulations to the following Merrifield students who were either win-
ners or finalists in the following age divisions: U10 Boys - Josh Talbot 3rd; U14 Girls - Adriel Wolmarans 1st; U14

stoked with these results and certainly hosted a fantastic event with great hospitality.
