NEWSLETT ER ㅊ Yantai Huasheng International School April 8, 2021 PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences (PTC) are scheduled for Monday, April 19. Parents are invited to meet with their child’s teachers to discuss student progress and goals. The time is planned to be reflective and action-oriented. Conferences can be an important part of the education process, giving parents time to ask questions and work together with teachers. While the Parent-Teacher Conference takes place in China time, our teachers are working across the globe in different time zones. As such, staff out of China have different time frames. Parents have an option to meet with out-of-country staff via Zoom either from home or from school. If you choose to meet with out-of-country staff via Zoom from school, another staff member will set up the meeting in a designated office for each teacher. Parents can reserve appointments with teachers through PowerSchool. Please refer to this guide that explains how to sign up for a meeting. Sign up closes at 11:59 pm, Tuesday, April 13. Printed report cards and MAP results (K-G10) will be available from the classroom teachers (ECC/ELEM) or from the front desk (SECD). Report cards that are not taken on the PTC day will be sent home through your child the following day. School staff and a few high school student volunteers will provide translation services for ECC and Elementary parents. Secondary students can translate for their parents with the exception of students in the ELS program, for whom staff members can be the translator. STUDENT COUNCIL ELECTIONS The Student Council elections for the 2021-2022 school year are coming up. This year, elections will take place in the spring for all officer positions, which will include the following positions: President, Vice President, Finance Director, Assistant Finance Director, Public Relations Director, Assistant Public Relations Director, Secretary, and Service Director (new position in 2021). On Friday, April 9, Student Council applications will be passed out in assembly to all interested students. After that date, students are also welcome to pick up applications from Miss Varble’s office any time before the application due date. Applicants for President and Vice President must be current 10th or 11th graders, while applicants for the other officer positions must be current 9th—11th graders. All applications, along with teacher recommendations and petitions, are due to Miss Varble’s office by April 22 at 4:30PM. Applications submitted after this date will not be accepted. All applicants will be interviewed by Student Council advisors to ensure that they meet the qualifications for their desired position(s). These interviews will be conducted from April 26 to May 7. When all interviews are completed, students will be notified whether or not they have been approved for the ballot. Approved students may then begin their campaigns on May 10 as they so desire. As part of the campaign process, candidates for President and Vice President will have the opportunity to address the student body in secondary assembly on May 14.
The elections for President and Vice President will take place on May 27, and the elections for other officer positions will take place on June 3. All secondary students in grades 6 – 11 will have the opportunity to participate in the voting process during lunch on those days. Results of the election will be announced in assembly the day following the elections. Student Council officers will then have the summer to begin discussing and planning together. In addition to the officers, a grade representative from each grade will be elected. The grade representative elections will take place in the fall in order to allow new students to apply. However, current students interested in being a grade representative should still fill out the application this spring, as the application process and the interviews will all take place during the aforementioned time period. The grade representative election will take place shortly after school resumes in August. If students have questions about the Student Council election process, students may talk to or email Miss Varble (lindsey.varble@yhischina.com).
