PH150036 CELEBRATING THE IMPERFECT AND UNIQUE When you think about mass-produced furniture it’s easy to imagine big machines spitting out glossy new products, each one identical to the one before. The INDUSTRIELL collection is our way of turning mass- produced uniformity on its head, by building into a product a beautifully imperfect, human quality without raising its price. This ambition had us completely rethink how we can make furniture. In partnership with designer Piet Hein Eek, we’ve developed new ways to work with wood, glass, ceramics and textiles. Always with the sustainable thinking that INDUSTRIELL Piet has in common with the IKEA approach. tea towel, 2 pack. CHF 8.95 The end results have a unique, human feel that’s quite unexpected for a large-scale production. Image caption: Piet holds up the finished towel, near his early studio sketches. INDUSTRIELL glass CHF 1.50 GLASS HALF FULL During development on the factory floor, Piet first became aware of the complexity involved in the large- scale production of pressed glass. After several false starts, there were even suggestions to forget this material altogether, although Piet was persistent. “I was of the opinion that this product fitted perfectly within the theme of handmade mass-production,” he says. The final design is essentailly a hand-drawn sketch converted into a digital drawing for production. The team decided to make INDUSTRIELL glasses on two different machines, which creates an interesting little mismatch when you combine them. PH150043 MASS-PRODUCED VS HANDCRAFTED Mass-produced furniture and handcrafted furniture each have their benefits. Large-scale production increases efficiency, so that high quality can have a reasonable cost. In contrast, handcrafted furniture can be as individual as the person that makes it. IKEA designers often discuss the idea of handcrafted furniture that’s available and accessible to the largest number of people. By happy coincidence, Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek has had many of the same thoughts. PH150033 PH150040 AN EXCITING COLLABORATION “When I graduated from design school there was a great drive for perfection in design,” Piet says. “If you made a thousand copies they had to be identical, and there was nothing in the design that hadn’t been put in there by the designer. I wanted to strip that idea away and let the material take the lead.” Piet is famous for using salvaged material to create beautiful furniture that is found in hotels and galleries around the world. This desire – to always find the value in reources that might otherwise go to waste – is the very foundation of the IKEA approach from the beginning. INDUSTRIELL shelving unit is the perfect example of trying to ‘throw away’ as little as possible. “Only the wood removed by saw cuts and by creating holes is taken away or burned,” Piet explains. While presenting a collection at the Milan Furniture Fair, he bumped into IKEA creative leader Karin Gustavsson and they realised that they were on the same wavelength. The idea of collaboration began to grow. “It turned out that IKEA and I had thought about the same thing for ages,” Piet says. “To make objects feel more human and more personal while still having an industrial production process.” INDUSTRIELL shelving unit INDUSTRIELL shelving unit CHF 129.– 003.945.49 CHF 129.– © Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2018 INDUSTRIELL limited edition / IKEA PRESS KIT / APRIL 2018 / 6
PH1500041 THE CHALLENGE BEGINS After a meeting in Älmhult, the Swedish town where IKEA products are designed, Karin and Piet decided INDUSTRIELL should span from wooden furniture to glass, ceramics and textiles. “The biggest challenge was how to keep the imperfections that give craft objects their individuality,” Piet says. “It was very difficult to persuade people in the factories to suddenly embrace what they usually perceive as mistakes.” Each type of product meant finding a new approach to making it. For the ceramic vases in the collection, handcrafted molds were designed so that there would be different shapes to choose from. For table and glassware, symmetrical designs were tweaked to create subtle variations. Textiles received similar treatment, skipping straight-line embroidery for hand-drawn like designs that pushed the capabilities of the machines making them. PH150038 YEARNING FOR THE UNIQUE One of the biggest challenges came with creating a chair from pine. “We made it a point to use as much of each tree as we could, keeping what you could call imperfections like knots and changes in the grain and colour,” Karin says. “Our supplier has something like a thousand workers who usually shape white unblemished pine furniture so we were asking them to work in a completely different way.” Already produced to strict standards, all IKEA wood will come by 2020 from more sustainable sources. In the production of INDUSTRIELL chair – as well as INDUSTRIELL table and INDUSTRIELL bench – this natural, beautiful material is treated with even more care and respect. The simple, minimal elegance of INDUSTRIELL INDUSTRIELL shelving unit is also evidence that less is chair sometimes more. CHF 89.95 Ultimately, this collection is designed to bring a warm, human feel to your home. “I think INDUSTRIELL is beautiful because you can feel a personality behind the products,“ Karin says. “They’re made to mix in with what you have and last for a long time, so hopefully they become part of your personality too.” All of our wood is sourced according to very strict standards, and by 2020 all our wood will come from more sustainable sources” och vill man utveckla kan man lägga till att “We define more sustainable sources as either recycled wood, or FSC certified. PH150035 INDUSTRIELL tea towel, 2 pack. CHF 8.95 DRAWN BY HAND, WOVEN BY MACHINE In Piet’s opinion, the tea towels are the clearest example of the ‘hand-made, mass-produced’ theme of INDUSTRIELL collection. He hand-drew the patterns, so that they would be less than perfectly geometrical. When sewn by machine – the design team hoped – the effect would be that of a handmade textile. “When the samples of the stripes and checks arrived, we saw just what a good idea it had been to persevere,” Piet says. “The checks give the impression that someone with an inferior handloom has really done their best to weave a lovely design. The pattern looks very handmade but INDUSTRIELL tea towel CHF 8.95/2 pack. is actually produced in large quantities on a superior 504.022.12 weaving machine.” © Inter IKEA Systems B.V. 2018 INDUSTRIELL limited edition / IKEA PRESS KIT / APRIL 2018 / 10
