Share Your Experience Holland Ridge Farms The Jansen family has grown tulips in Holland for 100 years. How wonderful for us that for the past several years the family has brought their tulip growing expertise just a short drive from Riviera. Holland Ridge Farms occupies 53 acres of farmland in Cream Ridge, NJ. It was here that the family planted 1,000,000 tulip bulbs in 2017. It is truly a tulip paradise which, when we visited last week, took our breath away. To borrow a phrase from the entertainment world, these fields of undulating tulips, planted in row after row, are true show-stoppers. Over 3,000 varieties of tulips exist, and Holland Farms showcases hundreds of them, from the brilliant Red Matador, the red and yellow Halley’s Comet, the multi-colored Parrot tulip, and my personal favorite, the strikingly vivid Purple Prince. Part of the fun of the experience is picking your own tulips. A visitor is given a basket Bernie and Sue Aaron and is free to pick as many tulips as desired. We chose a dozen, varying colors, and heights. Each stem costs $1.00. They bloomed for a week and brightened our day whenever we looked at them. One caveat: The property involves a lot of walking on uneven ground. For people with impairments, electric carts, driven by an employee, are available. Many people took advantage of this service. You will need to prearrange your visit by going to their website: http://www.hollandridgefarms.com. Remember to bring your mask; the rules state that if you are less than six feet away from another visitor, you must wear it. As we wandered the magnificent tulip fields, it was hard to believe we were not in Holland. It was a lovely way to spend an afternoon and we recommend it highly. While this Len Menconi, Chairperson is permitted, the concern is that many of the walkers are walking with the traffic flow, and the fear is that they may not be aware of vehicles approaching from the rear. To avoid any possible accidents, the Committee would like to recommend that walkers walk against the traffic flow so that they will be able to see an approaching vehicle. We would like to remind everyone that the community speed limit is 25 miles an hour, and we respectfully request that all residents, and their guests, observe the limit. Committee Reports Clubhouse Committee I love this time of year; it doesn’t get any better than this. Spring is in full bloom and Riviera is looking lush, green, and beautiful once again. Things are improving, and now, with some restrictions, we will be able to enjoy the indoor pool, gym, and outdoor facilities this summer. Memorial Day weekend is fast approaching, and this Committee will be working hard to get our pool area ready for opening day. The pool is being filled, the flowerbeds will be planted, and all the outdoor furniture and concrete will be cleaned, power washed, and readied for another season. Page Turners Our Book Club Meeting On Monday evening, April 19, our Page Turners Book Club gathered on “Zoom” for our monthly meeting. Our selection was the book, Florence Adler Swims Forever, by Rachel Beanland. Susan Aaron was our group discussion leader. Set in Atlantic City in 1934, it is the story of a Jewish family struggling to conceal the drowning of a cherished daughter for fear that her pregnant sister will lose her baby. The author writes of this tragic death and the secret from the point of view of several of the main characters. Based on a true story, this family saga allowed us the op- portunity to have a very interesting discussion about how far we should go to protect our loved ones, and also about how people who face adversity can endure, move on, and thrive even after tragedy. We hope that some of our new residents will join us in the future. If you would like more information about our book club, please contact Marla Kaplan. On Monday, May 17, we will review the novel The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. This book has gotten terrific reviews. Phyllis Gottlieb Chamoff ads-3257 may 2021, Riviera Ramblings 27
